It was a good day. A real good one.
I was recently offered the deal of my life (with exaggeration). To buy an IWC Mark XII. Having owned the Mark XVI and XV previously, I have always admired the Mark XII, both for it's history, unique JLC movement and size (36mm). Both the XVI and XV have been flipped, as I found the size a tad too big, especially on my scrawny 6.5" wrist.
So off I went to see the watch when the shop called me to inform me that it had it ready for viewing. I don't think I have felt this much excitement since my first date with my wife. It felt like the first time you knew you were going to have sex, or the first time you went to collect your brand new car.
The Mark XII was beautiful, my breath stopped when I saw it. This is when you know that the watch not only sings to you, it grabs your entire being and consumes your soul. Upon opening the caseback, I saw the original JLC movement, a 884 calibre 34 jewel movement. This movement predates the 36 jewel 884/2 movement which was used in the later Mark XII models. Nevertheless, the condition of the watch tho used, was beautiful. The crystal was without blemish, it came with full set box and papers and had a brand new original buffalo leather strap on it with the original buckle.
The watch does show signs of use. This to me is good, as it shows that the watch is more than capable of keeping good time. It was once someone's daily watch and this is a sign that the watch is able of doing what it's supposed to do. Watches that are still in showroom condition after 10 years, those are the ones you need to be careful with. The hands look like they have been changed but the original dial is still intact with a beautiful patina. This also goes to show that the previous owner must have sent it back to IWC for a thorough service which is expected for a 20 year old watch.
Best still, the price for this baby was only in the 4 figures. The credit card came out immediately.

Then the madness came. I bought another Omega Speedmaster as well. Oh well, let's just say I got a good deal for this one also, BNIB.

Love the XII, just a shame about the mismatched hands. What are the chances of sourcing some original hands?
