Title: My first Swiss Watch
Post by: clj on January 08, 2015, 11:22:32 AM
Hi all sifu!
I think my topic is quite popular in this forum  :P
Im a newbie and thinking to buy a "4 digit" watch. Initially, I was looking for RM4k+ dress watch but end up with some over budget watches after hunting and surfing around MWF.
I fall in love with these 2 watches and I hope to get some review/comment from all here. Meanwhile, suggestion on other watches are welcome.

1) Mido Baroncelli Moonphase M8607.4.M1.4

2) Frederique Constant Slimline Moonphase Manufacture FC-705V4S4
(http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t407/jeschong/FCMoonphase_zpsbd40620e.jpg)

Thank you in advance!

p/s: Am not sure whether comparing orange to apple as I saw some post that both brands are not in the same category.

Neither. If I were you, I will have 2 choices. First to save up more and get a better watch, because buying watches at this price I would say rather you buy a higher end, or dont buy at all. Second choice, would be hunting for a pre-owned watch in the range of the price.

Well, everyone have their own preference. If you insist on buying, I would go for the FC! But I don't think the FC is within ur 4K+ budget..

Another suggestion would be the LLD!

Around that price range. I suggest you go for oris or ball. Get a pre-owned watch

I think u might want to consider what and why do u need that watch for.  Mikster got a point. I also think it is a personal choice. As for me, I like my watch to be flexible for both formal and informal situation. Like it to look sharp when I'm dress down and even sharper when I need to suit up. I found that for me, I'm more suitable for the sport model (submariner, orient ray, aquaracer) kind of thing.

I like Jurghans of the design and lightless but for me it is not flexible enough (Jurghans are beautiful especially for a dress watch).

Cut thing shorts, if u have a watch that u like so much and can't stop thinking of it, go for that. If it is over budget, safe up and be loyal at hunting that. Otherwise, it will hunt u for the rest of ur life till the moment u got it on ur wrist  ;D

Unlike others advising you to get a particular brand, I'd advise you to ask yourself what are you looking for in purchasing the watch. If it's just like what you mentioned, as a dress watch, both of the watches are fine though there are other cheaper alternatives. If you're looking for a watch as a dress watch that also carry some "prestige/status" and doesn't look that "cheap", both of the brands are still fine and there are many more that carry higher "prestige/status"(according to some ppl) that are much more expensive.

So, the question now is how much $ are you willing to part with to get a dress watch? And how will you wear it?(as a daily watch?, to parties?, dinners?,formal events?,to pasar malam?, etc..).

Buying a watch depends on your own preference, budget, purpose and most importantly whether you like it or not.

hi, thanks for the replies! In fact i started from a RM1k+ Tissot watch. After look see look see, I decided to pay up to get a better one, say around RM4k but not manage to get a watch that I like in this price range. And I would like to get a new watch instead of pre-owned. Still trying to look around.

mikeylacroix,
this is a very nice watch indeed but I prefer a dress watch for time being.

squasub,
I own a Seiko but itz a 'normal' watch lar. So, I would like to get another brand.

shwn31,
Oris not my cup of tea. I like Ball but can't get the model I like from the shop I visited yet.

chrisyen,
thanks!

Narco,
I got your point and 100% agree! I have a sportier rubber strap watch and now would like to own a dress watch for the moment when I feel like "being a gentleman"  ;D  Junghans is very nice indeed. Thanks for intro this brand to me and I will look into it.

sinbad2k,
good 1! Could you intro some watches that carry higher "prestige/status"? say within RM10k range?

JeepWH & femann,
Thanks for your comment. I will follow my heart at the end of the day for sure

Hmm just wondering why you look for 10k range watches for now if your budget is 4k, or you want save up for a better level watch?
Just curious...

Are you specifically looking for a dress watch or you are open to other options as well say sports, diver etc.? Are you looking for used or strictly new only? Plenty of options available at your budget.

Maurice Lacroix has plenty of dress watches around 7-10k.
