I am wondering whether you guys just buy the watch on display or ask for a 'new' one from stock? Understand some expensive pieces may have only 1 on display.

I normally want a new one in stock; but if there was only one piece and t'was on display, I'll take it too if the condition is as-new. Heck, I have even taken slightly-scratched-almost-new display piece as the AD couldn't guarantee when they could get a "new" stock. But the AD gave me slightly more discount and I came home to put my Cape Cod watch polishing cloth to good use; and voila, a shiny new piece again :thumbsup:

The above option, e-bay, etc... lots of places also can get, mate.

From my experience when I was looking for a Panerai watch, the few shops I went did tell me they only carry 1 pcs per model. Guess it means it display stocks all the time. I am just happy I can see and try before I purchase and never cross my mind on new stock or display stock.

For me it does not matter. The piece I will take has to be flawless as per intended by the manufacturer. So, before committing, have to check thoroughly. I want to be the first one to scratch it ;D ;D ;D

Depends how desperado I am at that time.

For me, I try to ask any new stock if available else will just settle for the display piece. Recently I had an experiencing viewing some Grand Seikos and the salesgirl accidentally knocked and dropped the watch on the display shelf, ouch.... I guess the GS can take the slight knock.

Never take things for granted even if it is supposedly still sealed in plastic. Always, always check.
There are few horror stories from forummers about problems immediately after walking out of the AD's door. I too faced such a situation before. :Confused: :Scolding: :Startled:

I only ask for store-kept item when buying apparel, especially when it comes to intimate wear… no return policy…

For me, I’m indifferent. After all, sealed items can easily be re-sealed.
There are times when I would like something which is ‘fresh’ from the store-room and would like to believe that the last person who has handled the watch was the watchmaker, but in reality, it had survived and sustained much abuse from freight, mishandling of staff and many occasion of wrist-test from other potential customers before reaching your hands. Watches of higher price range and upper echelon of brands are not spared from this.
Purchasing a timepiece should be done in a calm and composed manner, allowing as much time as you can to inspect the article before committing to the transaction, regardless from display or from the store-room. Ask lots of question on how they conduct their business and it’ll give you an idea on how they take care of the watches.
In the case something is wrong, that’s what warranty is for.
Once I noticed something was wrong with one of the watches that I bought (which was was kept in the store and sealed) , soon after I walked out from the AD. But because it was the only known piece left, and the fact that I loved it so much, I had to endure 3 months without it, being sent back to the manufacturer for warranty repair. It came back working well and looks better than before.
There are some watch brands which has policy of ensuring all watches being displayed are wound up and running displaying the correct time. It gives me the confidence that if I had to pick up that one and only piece which is being displayed, it is working fine and well.

As much as I wanted a factory sealed watch, I don't have any luck, it is a display model but proper inspection is a must before closing the deal.

Bought a mid-range German branded watch a few years back. All new, still in plastic covering from the plant. Did work when doing cursory inspection but within a few hours it stopped. Had to sent it back to the AD and after a month got it back. Within a year the same problem persisted. Got so pissed that I decided to go to an external watchmaker to check whats wrong. Found out one of the stem connecting the gears was bent. Thankfully it was easily mended (movement was an ETA 2824, tons of spare parts around). Despite being satisfied with the end result, I voided the guarantee by not going back to them.
Why it happened will never be known - it could be a QC issue at the plant; the transport company or even the AD could have dropped it.
Despite the trials and tribulations, the watch now works as intended. Still using it :)
