Title: RE: Ultimate Watch Collection for the discerning Gentleman Part 1 - Chrono
Post by: ExplorerII on July 21, 2014, 04:32:09 PM
Don't think I have seen such a thread here (apologise if there is) so am starting one.  Every Gentleman needs a collection of watches for different occasions.  For the sake of having an elegant collection lets narrow it down to: The Dress Watch, The Work Watch or Daily Beater, The Chrono Watch and The Complication Watch.

Let's start with the Chrono on for this thread.

If you could have only one Chrono what would it be?

For me, I am thinking along the lines of either Zenith or Rolex (veering more towards Zenith). Let the fun begin!

http://www.zenith-watches.com/en_en/el-primero-410-183.html

And remember,  you can only have ONE! (i.e. it's not only about having lots of money to buy many watches ).

If one like Chrono watch purely on aesthetic perspective, plenty of choices around. but on practicality, most of the chrono with screw down crown are "impossible" to use when the watch is on wrist. one have to practically remove the watch from the wrist, unscrew the chrono crown before starting to time. which i find is ridiculous and defeat the purpose. :HammerHead:

Yes i know. just that i find it end up "purely" for aesthetic purpose. i would prefer the Chrono on AP offshore that is readily "useable" if there is a need.

My top pick will be a Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph (Blue dial).
While it is not a historically important and there is no technical breakthrough, I really dig the look.  :)

I vote for a Zenith El Primero.
I got the Chronomaster for 2014. The case design is not as thick as other chronos (in the same price range), fits better under a shirt cuff.

Watches or chronographs created during a time when time moves slowly or leisurely and when the interaction between a man and his watch is more personal. To be honest, I do not find it a chore nor do I need to remove my watch to unscrew the chromo button to use it.

Strangely, I am attracted to car-racing-themed chrono watches.  Hence, I am quite happy with this

Screw down pushers and 45 mins counter ...hmmm......  :P

Could be wrong but 45 minutes chrono with screwdown crown and buttons were created for divers of old where the tank could only hold 45 minutes of air. So, to ensure 'water proofness' of the watch, the screwdown buttons were introduced, as with the 45 minute chrono.

But of course it could be as simple as for timing a football game....
