I was meeting up with a business friend few days back and when i arrived he was having lunch with some of his businessmen friend. so i was asked to join them for tea while they are finishing the lunch soon. various topics were chatted over the lunch and finally it touched on watch.
My interest was aroused and eager to hear what they say. Not unexpectedly, most of chinese businessmen sitting round the table are wearing Rolexes. One senior said he made money on his Rolex "King" of which he bought less than RM10k while now can sell for RM40k. some argued the two tone datejust is not real 18k gold but plated.
Finally one 40+ years old chap voiced up loudly that "Rolex is the best watch brand, but with lousiest accuracy!". he went on to explain "confidently" and "professionally" that a rolex would run 15 min faster EVERY month and need servicing yearly. I almost spit out the tea in my mouth. I almost wanted to rebut his remark and ask him whether he has ever serviced his Rolex,(alas! my dad's 30+ year old datejust that never been serviced only deviates by 5 min per month) but some of his friends kind of agree with him so in the end i just kept quiet and smile.
Nevertheless i admire Rolex for being so successful that someone strongly believe that it runs 15 faster every month and still willing to pay good money for it!

been seeing a lot of two tone DJs lately... seems like a must have among uncles :Dancing_banana:
-
Brother maybe the uncle didn't service his Rolex. I had a client with an explorer II also ask me once whether my Rolex is accurate or not. I told him I don't use my watch to tell the time lol.

Interesting encounter,. :D :D
So what were you wearing at the time?

My Lange. But no one knows a tiny bit about the brand. ;) but at least they thought it is not the lousiest in accuracy. :Laughing_on_floor:

I have seen BMWs and Mercedes broke down on highways. They are the lousiest cars??? Anyway, your friends who talked about Rolexes being gold-plated or running badly, are probably talking about the cheap fake ones they bought at chi cheong kai..

Sorry, not my friends. Just my biz friend's friend. ;)
I wouldn't be so polite to my friends :Laughing_on_floor:

Actually nobody noticed and i never bother to explain. i only voiced up that the Rolex TT is indeed 18k and not gold plated. ;)
-
Hmmm....interesting. I never had any issues with my Rolex when it comes to accuracy! But then, I'm not a stickler for details...If it's off by several seconds, I really can't be bothered. ;)

That is perhaps the best thing to do. Just like your timepiece that you're wearing, you're both understated and elegant.

I call this "Shiok Sendiri" :Dancing_banana:

They treat watches as a tool to bring out their social status. Save your breath and No point to argue or educate them if they are Into watches . Even u do so they ll still tell u Rolex the best despite their early statement abt accuracy

my relative with a 2 tone rosegold DJ thought his watch is superior until his friend told him that his watch price can't even match a basic PP :Laughing_on_floor:

PP? what PP? Pied Piper? :D

Personally, I have nothing against Rolex. It's a fine brand that churns out fine watches.
Just crossed my mind, at what point we, as watch enthusiasts, cross the fine line and become snobs.
Lesser beings like me may not be able to maintain my cool like Eric did in table like that.
-
Rolex, the best watch brand? Lol. :Laughing_on_floor:
-
Eric... would have been interesting to hear what they think of Grand Seiko.
Seiko vs Rolex... like David vs Goliath.... not sure if anyone could have convinced them abt GS quality though... ;D

I believe none of them know about GS. If u wear one, they may say, hi bro, why so stingy wear a cheaplak seiko, buy lolex lah. :HammerHead:
But on another occasion my father's long time friend came to visit him, I happened to notice this 70 year old uncle wore a GS spring drive! i heard he was robbed of his gold rolex before so now I believe he prefers to keep low profile.

Rolex indeed one of the best brand. Accuracy? who care? its more than just a timepiece when Rolex is on your wrist. :)
-
Rolex, the best watch brand? Lol. :Laughing_on_floor:
As a watch, Rolex may not be THE best but it is certainly one of the best out there. Movement is reliable, case is tough, keeps time well when properly adjusted and overall very robust.
As a brand, Rolex could very well be the best. Nearly everyone knows what a Rolex is even if they've never owned one. As the OP has mentioned, even though the accuracy is off, the owner still adores it so that speaks a lot about how successful the brand is.
-
Although now i tend to prefer other brands than rolex, and my next purchase would not be a rolex. but if i could only have 1 watch on all functions. it would be Rolex.

Where would mankind be without Rolex!!?

Lol what the hell "they managed without oxygen" .....
-
"They managed without oxygen"! Haha!!
Probably some kind of alien breathing carbon dioxide instead of oxygen.
-
With a quartz? Battery works very well even in low temperatures? Or was it kept warm by body heat?

The air up there is very thin, so you need o2 to survive and reach the peak of Everest. Reinhold Messner was the first man to climb Everest without the aid of o2 tanks.

Who say Rolex is lousiest in accuracy? ;D ;D

Yes, Rolex is indeed the lousiest in accuracy.
Under any circumstances, how can a Mercedes outrun a Ferrari? How can Nico Rosberg has more points than Kimi Raikkonen?
Surely Rolex has done a bad time keeping jobs in F1.
;D ;D

Anyway being said, its all about the watch and person handling it. If the person are hardcore type then he will adjust dead accurate with tiny room for deviation. Nowdays most of the movement are capable of getting good rate. The question is do they have the time and money to ensure that these movement run accurately?

quoting from peter speake-marin "rolex is the most visible watch"
quoting from woon say ngiew (translated from cantonese) "you crazy or what? spent so much on lousy steel"
we all know who is peter speake-marin but who is this woon say ngiew? he is my father :Laughing_on_floor: :Laughing_on_floor: :Laughing_on_floor:
both of them are people i admire but in different matters.
back to rolex accuracy, i find rolex is more accurate than a lot of other luxury watches but i don't buy rolex for its accuracy.
for me, it is a big no no and also i find it very irritating when a watch minute hand moved when i push the crown. to come across luxury time pieces with this flaw is very disheartening. rolex don't have this problem so i am happy with it.
alrighty algeria vs russia is starting soon. cheers.
