Title: Advice Needed: Watch Repair for BALL
Post by: maru on April 15, 2014, 08:57:43 PM
Hi all,

I had a road accident last week and the BALL (the wrist watch) scratched pretty badly. I guess that the glass and the top case need to be replaced. The good news is the watch still functioning flawlessly. So, need advice from esteem members in this forum on recommending shops that can do the repair and the probable damages to the wallet. Or ..... I should get a new watch instead.

The image of the Scratched BALL as below:

Second that. But I guess they would have do a routine check on the movement first before allowing you to replace those parts. My estimate that it should cost approximately 700.

Anyway, hope you're alright from the accident. But you definitely sounds fine from the way you emphasis the BALL was not from your body, but the watch.

I can say that I'm OK now after a week rest from the office. A big relief if the repair cost is around those figures that everyone has mentioned.

And my estimate assumed that the watch movement is fine from the fall. Do keep us updated with the watch.

Info from BALL Malaysia: Need to change the sapphire glass and the whole case. Movement is in good shape. Need to wait 2 months for parts to arrive. Cost RM1,070. Ouch!!!

The price seems quite reasonable to me. As my previous 700 estimate doesn't take a replacement watch case into consideration, just the sapphire crystal and the bezel.

Anyway, is the case badly scratched to your eyes? It's hard to judge from the angle of the picture you provided. If it's not too horrible, you could try requesting them to retain and refinish the watch case (only replacing the bezel). By doing so it will definitely keeps the cost down and nearer to my estimation.

I believe the service centre will usually ask to replace. Such damage could have caused minute deformations that could compromise the ability of the gaskets to maintain water tightness.

That might be the case. However, I believe there would be no harm asking them to pressure test the watch first instead of replacing the whole case if the scratches were not too bad on the case. If it fails the test, then there's no other alternatives but to get the bezel, crystal and case replaced.

Anyway, is there just surface scratches on the crystal or it has deep cracks? I am afraid if there's cracks, the pressure test might mostly fail because of the crystal instead of the case deformation. Do keep us updated bro.

I had a minor superbike crash. Lucky with just scratches on the knees and slight pain on the ribs with no broken bones. 8 days medical leave. Thanks to my helmet, jacket and gloves. I should wear knee protector in the future.

The cost inclusive of installation and water resistance test which require 2 weeks. So, it might be worth it for the long run.

How much is the cost of the watch?  RM3500?  The repair cost is relatively expensive.... :Blue:

case need to be changed due to the bezel is badly damaged... it might be dented, especially the part attaching to bezel

if  change the case, bezel, crystal - what left?
the dial, hands, crown and the eta 2836

so less than 1/3 of the watch price.... its reasonable in my opinion
