Title: What camera do you use?
Post by: takashi78 on July 01, 2010, 09:05:15 PM
I've seen a lot of impressive photo taking skills in this forum so lets see what you guys and gals use to take pics.
As for me my lousy Nikon digicam takes worse close up pic than my Nokia phone >:(

Finally another fellow Canon DSLR user. I use the Canon EOS 550D when I need the higher resolution and finer controls.
For more casual shots I use the Canon S90. The quality is surprisingly good for a point + shoot. Took the following watch pic with the S90 recently and was very pleased with the decent results:

Mine is an old one.... Nikon Coolpix L4 4MP.  :'(

Need a good light source to take a good picture. Otherwise the pic will be blur. So hard to take a nice picture in a room.

Current Canon G series G11 has RAW files.  In fact only G7 doesn't have RAW.  All the G series prior to G7 (G1, G2, G3, G5, G6) have Raw and so are G9, G10, G11.  Canon skipped G4 and G8 in their G series lineup.
Title: Re: What camera do you use?

Penaut,

Sorry, I dont realise that current G series have RAW file. I dont really catch up with Camera technology. Thats why i still have G3 in use as I dont really take photography  :HammerHead:
Title: Re: What camera do you use?
Post by: peanut on July 07, 2010, 11:30:51 AM
Coincidentally I also have a G3 but now it is not used anymore!  It is hard to keep up with the latest camera.  It is no point if you are not doing this as a serious hobby and believe you want the best and latest technology.  Camera depreciates worse than watches and it follows Moore's law - performance (mega pixels) or ISO (low light capability) improves significantly every 18 months.

Nex 3, nex 5 or wait for nex 7?
Do u all think nikon, canon will counter to Sony nex 5?

The simple answer is that if you need one get one.  However, as per Sony Nex 3 or 5, I say I would wait.  One, the user interface is quirky.  Two, there is less manual control/option.  Although you get larger sensor (than normal compact) and interchangeable lens, but the two points above render this camera less useable.  It is a good attempt on Sony to do this but I think the 2nd generation (may be Nex 7?) will be much improved.

I think Canon and Nikon are evaluating the Sony, Olympus and Panasonic's success before they jump in.  They must have prototype built.
Title: Re: What camera do you use?
Post by: Scott C. on July 07, 2010, 10:44:48 PM
I personally like NEX5 a lot especially the photo quality. I tested it again today at Sony Center. Actual there is a manual control but you will need to navigate few more steps to get there.. no shortcut key.. But the AI control is good (auto adjust the ISO, focus point and there is a new feature where you can adjust the depth of view easily) which i quite like it ;) But then "problem" is you can't change to manual mode by using any shortcut key... which can be quite troublesome.

I would say if you like it, just grap one and who know when newer model will come out? I don't believe there will be a perfect camera in the market (or any coming model), i'm sure the new model after NEX3/5 has its pros and cons too... so, why wait if you wanted one ;)

btw, the major different between NEX3 and NEX5 is:-
a) The Video recording resolution for NEX3 is up to 720p, NEX5 is up to 1080p.
b) NEX5 has a move-able LCD screen.

For review, you can read up the following:-

My late father was a dentist but operated a photo studio as hobby & 2nd source of income. My kampung still have MANY cameras with different sizes, from spy cameras to the dinosaur of the 60s-70s made from solid wood.

I started learning photography when I was 10, using analog SLR Olympus OM1, OM2. Later Canon DSLRs EOS 630, 650(?), G5, etc.. lost count of them...

I use 3 cameras now :
1) EOS 1D (1st generation) with few L lens inherited from my father
2) Powershot S3 12x super-zoom
3) Pocket size Lumix FX38

I have holidays overseas once every year, my all time favourite is still the versatile & simple all-in-1 Powershot S3. No hassle of changing lens...

Am still considering a EOS 550D body or again, the all-in-1 Fujifilm HX10 "30x Super-zoom"... wahaha...shok ! :Laughing_on_floor:

I wouldn't get the X1.  It is too expensive for its own good - a typical Leica price tag.  Buying an X1 is like buying BMW 320i: looks sporty but cannot even out run a Camry 2.4!

It is not any better than much much cheaper Panasonic (e.g. GF1, etc.).  If I dont spend my money on my Canon and watches, I will get the Leica M9    ;D

Title: Re: What camera do you use?
Post by: peanut on September 10, 2010, 07:37:50 PM
I wouldn't go as far to say that it is the best compact.  It depends on your criteria.  Yes, the APS-C size sensor is its best selling point but it has fixed and "only" f2.8 aperture.  GF1, with its excellent pancake lens at f1.7, will easily negate the ISO performance advantage of the APS-C sensor.  Moreover, the Leica's LCD screen is below average and the operations overall is very slow.  With the Leica price tag, it makes very tough value proposition.

Just when I'm still undecided in buying a EOS 550D or S90, there are already newer models published in magazine ie. EOS 60D & S95. What a pleasant surprise ! The product life cycle of cameras are really short nowadays.

Besides, I just have a chance of trying out a new Lumix LX5 as well today. This is getting more interesting.  ;D

Yeap! A55/A33 is a good camera ;) but i read from somewhere the camera has overheat problem especially during the video recording.. not sure will sony fix it. I just bought my nex5 back in July and i'm impress with the feature that sony put into the nex (a55/a33 has almost identical features compare to nex5/3 but the selling point for this a55 is its 10fps ;)) as well as it's support. In less then 3 months, sony has released 2 firmware upgrades to solve some problems reported for nex and the last firmware make the camera much much more user friendly if user choose to operate in "manual" mode.. good job Sony ;)

Hi, Just bought a Canon S95 a couple of days ago. So many features it will be sometime
before i can understand them all. The last camera i own was a Nikon D80 and not so complicated.

Nowdays printed manuals are not provided.  With my bad memory i decided to print the entire PDF
manual 200 pages in A4 size. Better than damaging my eyesight.

How do you guys cope with these PDF  user manuals ? Or am i the only one having problem
adjusting to the green initiative?

Bro ... you are really out -of-date.  50D was released in 2008.  Now people are upgrading to 60D.  60D is good for beginner but more serious photographer should look at 7D, 5D MKII (which rumoured to be replaced this year) or 1D MKIV.

Camera is not like watch.  It actually depreciates even more than watches.  I tend to give away my digital cameras to my family members once I have upgraded mine.

The order of priority on my give-away list are: spouse-> kids-> siblings -> other relatives.  So if you want to get it faster, you have to call me dad instead of bro!   :Laughing_on_floor:

The ones that I have now (5D MKII and 1D MKIV) are good at least for another 1 to 2 years (and that's assuming that my photography skills is improving).    ;D

I'm still dreaming of the S95, it's my perfect compact cam, due to the small size and large image sensor. The competitors to this model out there from Panasonic etc are a little too bulky for a "pocket camera - literally". I'm looking for something that fit's in my jeans but offers a large enough sensor to function well in low light conditions (mainly dinners). Can't find anything else that compares.

Cheers.

Post by: peanut on January 04, 2011, 02:46:42 PM
S95 is an excellent compact camera that is small enough to fit into a pocket.  It provides good image quality and good performance but it does not have a "large" sensor.  Its sensor is an average compact camera sensor which is only about 25 sq mm.  Low light performance is OK but it can't be that great since it is a compact with tiny sensor. If you want a larger sensor, get the Leica X1 (APS-C) or Panasonic GF1 (Micro Four Third).

Overall, S95 is one of the best ones if you want a real pocket size compact. LX5 is actually another good competing model -it is larger but has "better" lens.

Rumour is that the software is different between the Leica and the Panasonic. Can't confirm but I have a Leica C-Lux and have to say that the outdoor shots are ok but indoor not so great.

How do you take those really nice and sharp close-up pictures of watches? I'm using Nikon D50 with Sigma 18-200mm lens, but for some reason I'm having problem trying to get really good close-up shots of my watches, especially the face and dial. Do you use macro lens? Which macro lens do you recommend?
Title: Re: What camera do you use?

You can use macro lens if you want as it gives the best result, however the lenses are not cheap. Other options include close up filters or to use your current lens and crop the picture. Most important is get a tripod and use self-timer or remote release to reduce camera shake.

Yes, agree. Macro lenses can cost thousands of ringgit. I would spend that money on watches. I've never heard of "close up filters" before. I'll need to find out more about these. And thanks for the tip, I hadn't thought using tripod and self timer to take close-up of watches.

a 50mm prime would work great for macro shots and does not really cost much. if you are using the big C or N, there are countless third party lenses and secondhand choices.  but anyway nowadays, a compact point and shoot like a S95 works really really good too

btw...anyone using full frame here? wanna ask is it's really all it's said too be compared to a APS-C cameras.

try raynox dcr250, pretty good macro adapter with reasonable price.

I doubt 50mm can do "proper" macro but with the adapter should be OK. you need tripod and flash to do proper marco (or steady hands at least)...

I just bought a Canon 5dmk2 (FF), the photos that i took during our 2nd Anni was using the 5Dmark2 with 24-70/2.8L.... mostly ISO1600 to ISO3200... not really a fantastic photos but image quality real good while viewing the original on my laptop.. it's really depend your need whether or not to pick up a FF or APS-C camera... both has it's own advantages and disadvantages.. i bought this simply for the Image quality ;) but can't get longer range while using the 70-200 lens...

i guess it depends on what sort of "macro" you want to shoot whahah  if you wanna shoot the "crown" on your rolex dial then of course that would be hard.

if you jsut wanna shoot good pics of your watch up close, then a good prime and proper lighting would suffice.

50mm? You mean 50mm macro lens, or the normal 50mm prime lens? I have the Nikkor 50mm 1.4 lens, but when I tried to take close-up of my watch dial, the photo become blurry and not sharp. Maybe my technique needs improving. Haven't tried the tripod and self timer method yet.

By the way, how much does a close-up adapter cost, roughly?

Every lens come with a minimum focus length... the ordinary 50mm can't do macro (i mean proper macro) unless using the adapter lik CK77 mentioned.

there are 3 solutions:-

1) Get a reverse ring to make your 50mm a macro by reverse the lens (google it and you should find it), less then RM100.
2) Get a adapter raynox dcr250 or any other brand, around RM200 to RM300.
3) Get a proper macro lens. Not sure about Nikon but Canon 100mm/2.8L IS is my preference or Canon MP-E65mm pro macro (can go up to 5 times the macro).

Cheers!!

This is the method 1 scott mentioned.
Using Nikkor 50mm f.18 with reverse macro. Original image no cropping.

Scott is now serious into photography!  5D mk2 is a great camera but rumours are that 5D Mk3 is coming this year.  Now you ought to buy 35L, 85L and 135L to have the holy trinity of Canon fixed lenses.  The 85L is one of the most incredible lens you will ever see!

Actually the reverse adapter isn't a bad idea. I did a quick search on our local auction site and it was going for like RM50+ or so. I'm kinda worried about the exposed sensor, though? I'm using a 50mm f/1.8. Any comments/suggestions?

It is very difficult to get it right for reverse macro.
Main concern is bearing the risk of dust going into the lens (as the lens opening is in front).
Then you have to get the exposure in guesstimate or manually, i.e metering, aperture, shutter speed, focus etc.

@ck77: Yeah, the issue of dust into the lens is something I worry about. Maybe going back to a compact camera would be better for this (on a low budget), since compact cams tend to have nice basic macro modes, hehe.

Yeah I agree...the more I read about reverse macro, the more unattractive this option is to me.

Kevlarr, the reason you're getting blurry shots is definitely to do with the MFD. Try taking a few steps back until you a get a focus confirmation. Snap and crop the photo later. This is one cost effective way or alternatively get the raynox adapter.
But best would be a marco lens but once you get into that you'll start wanting for multiple flashes, light box and good tripod ...meaning more $$$ ::)  IHMO unless you forsee yourself taking loads of marco shots of bugs, flowers, figurines, etc, it won't be much use...and it'll just be a waste to just take horology shots.
