Title: Patek Philippe - To me
Post by: Smaug on December 31, 2013, 08:55:44 AM
My dad recently passed me his patek aquanaut. To be frank not my cup of tea. Tot of selling it off to get a Panerai or Rolex Gmt.

hmm your father don't mind if you sell it? no sentimental value?

I am quite sure your father will be disappointed and it might be a decision that you may live to regret. Keep the PP from your father for the sentiment and buy a Panerai or Rolex at your own accord.

If you have that mindset, I suppose I won't try to convince you to keep it.

Perhaps it is a good thing to sell it off to someone else who would appreciate it a lot more.

IMHO... Definitely much nicer and classier than any Panerais or the Rolex GMT. You should be so lucky that your dad has such impeccable taste.

I honestly don't think it is for us to tell you what to do with your watch. Just follow your heart and conscience - and what is more important to you.

There goes the PP tagline....

If you really want to get rid of it, I'll swap a GMT master for it.. and you don't have to top up any cash. :P

As long as your father ok... You can trade with something you like!

No point wearing something you don't like

trade-in for a Nautilus ... (sorry not sure how much you need to top-up though).
and you can still pass it down.

Patek the Rolls-Royce of watches.
It's more than what you see with your naked eye.
Patek Aquanaut, an amazing sport watch made.
Sporty yet with a touch of Elegance.

Tell you what...consider changing the strap to a leather or a rubber.
I'm very sure your perception will change!

Aquanauts are hot. When I saw John Mayer in concert in Wembley 2 months ago, he had a PP Aquanaut on his wrist.

A gift, especially from your parents, can never be monetized........just my view.

This is how I feel about it, too.

My folks bought me an antique gold pocket watch when I won a scholarship to my school as a child.  I have probably only worn the thing a dozen times in 25+ years but it isn't going anywhere.  That's for sure.

That said, it's your dad's watch, not my watch, so you need to do what you feel comfortable with.

Have a chat with my dad and ask his opinion on rolex and panerai. Pp = Rolls Royce. Rolex = Most recognised watch in the world. Panerai = From Italy. In order to sell more Pam they set up  plant in Swiss to obtain Swiss Made.

Somehow I have a feeling most Panerai collectors would prefer if Panerai have stayed in Italy rather then move.

As for obtaining 'Swiss Made' and what it entrails..... emmmm.....

The allure and prestige of the "Swiss Made" moniker is all too often too difficult to resist. Parallel to Panerai's dilemma is I guess that of Anonimo. Proudly still called Anonimo Firenze and inextricably  bound to the banks of the Arno in Florence, they had to balance and justify the Swiss made badge to their strongly Italian brand. This they do by the following   "Born on the banks of the Arno in Florence, Anonimo was raised and grew up in Switzerland, a country where watchmaking rules....".

Now that's a great spin if you ask me..... ;) ;) ;)

Agree fully.
It's something your loved ones passed on to you.
It has nothing to do with your preference but everything to do with your cherished memories of a loved one.
You can buy any watch in the world but not "that one" that is from your DAD. :Praying:

Does your father plan to adopt any Godson?? I'm volunteering.
Jokes aside. Keep the Patek. Somethings are priceless ..especially when it's PP or gifts from our parents.
When you have $$ in future, you can always buy whatever watches that you like/loved.
However a heritage or gift from your father...you'll cherish it till the day you die.  We all get old one day and can only look back on the sweet memories of our loved ones.

One more thing...  Your kids might not be too impressed one day when they learned you sold Grandpa's watch rather than handing it on.

Sell off a Patek to get a Rolex.. or shudder.. a Pam. Oh, what a blasphemy.

Seriously though, keep it. Sell it, and I am pretty sure you will regret it as you get older.

If you like the Rolex or the Pam at present, by all means, buy them.. but don't sell off the watch that your dad gifted you.

Sorry Smaug, my bad.  After more than a decade of heavy partying I cna barely remember what happened before lunch, let alone what happened in December.

'Tis a fine thread indeed!

Smaug, has your dad had the case polished?  In the pics you posted the polishing, to be frank, doesn't really look that impressive.  Full of distortions and far from 'mirror-like'.  Or is this typical of Patek Phillipe?

Brand new no Polish, no hairline, like new. Keep in the safe. I think is typical Pp case as you mentioned.
