Title: Watch Collecting
Post by: G.MAC on June 15, 2010, 11:30:12 PM
Since there are so many watchmaniacs here like me, just want to know. how have you been collecting watches and who first influenced you into the world of horologerie' ;? as for me, the craze was started by my dad and it has been going on for 3 years now. ;D so you can see here that i am merely a beginner in this whole timepieces collecting hobby.

I loves watches since I was a kid. Then I loved Casio & Citizen but not many though, 1 each. Seiko is bit out of my reach until I reached my 20s. Then in my 30s I moved on to Swiss watches which I began with Omega Speedmaster. During my kid and teenager days, technology is my utmost criteria i.e. cool features like multiple alrms, 24-hr. Also, i'm looking for a perfect time keeper. Not knowing to me then, digital watches with no radio wave reception doesn't keep accurate time, silly  ???. As you get to know the world better, u know there are many imperfections. That when is when I start to appreciate mechanics watches. Getting the time right to within or less than 10s/day is quite a challenge for mechanic watches unlike digital watches. Given any quartz based watches will delivery accurate time within or better than 1s/day.

Once u got on the slippery slope of watch collection the rest is history .

For me, it all started with my first Tag huer when i am 9 years old, even since then it is a disaster. Watch collection is like a drug addict.

For me I have always love watches since I was a kid.
my very first watch was a casio F91W, i think 9 out of 10 kids in school have that watch.
then when I was 15 my dad bought me a seiko quartz chrono for doing well in school. I still have that watch with me after 10 years, although it stopped working now.
then last year when I got my first job, I bought myself a proper swiss made watch. although many people fawn upon this brand, I love the vintage style of it. its a Tag Carrera Chrono.
the next watch Im eyeing would b either the new tudor heritage chrono!!!!  :Praying:
or anything with a moonphase, annual calendar complication.
any sifu know the best value watch for those complications? i nearly bought a Oris grand complication with moonphase, annual calendar, day week for just under £1XXX last month, but the deal fell through!
  :Blue:

anyway...that's my story so far!

I think the watch craze is never-ending.
for me, it all started when I step into JW 5.5 years ago...and then speaking a little more with my mother, she then tell me stories of my grand-dad selling citizen watches on frequent business trips to Sabah and Sarawak..and to earn more $, he will sell lots of watch parts and accessories especially BATTERIES!! hahaha..

The first time I love a watch is when I was given a Swatch limited edition 5th Element (with dome crystal) @ age 13. then one day I think i accidentally take out the watch during shopping, someone stole it..and I know who stole it, but i didnt dare to say anything cause that guy was with his "gang"....i was quite mad and for 3 years, i didnt want to have a watch. LOL

Then fast forward to 5 years ago, I walked into JW and started to learn more about what are the basic 3 types of watches; quartz, manual and automatic. from there, the rest is history. today I dont owe all any of the famous swiss, or germany luxury brands; but I have always been an admirer for the more unique design, movement and limited edition watches.

I acquire watches based on how I feel, and the financial position I have at the point of purchase. sometimes, it's an impulse, but then this is why watch collecting can be so fun! hahaha... you never have enough. always wondering which brand or which new kid in town will come up with something and interesting.

more importantly, i learn to enjoy and admire how human beings are so clever at making anything out from nothing and place them in a wristwatch.
sometimes I miss the good old classic watches of the 36-40mm with clean, classic, crisp design - focusing on the movement quality and finishing.

Sometimes it's good to be able not to buy all the watches you see, otherwise, where's the fun of it? it's what you can't get, that makes you want to have it more..and get "obsessed" about it (as what my mother says about me..LOL)

I also think the kind of watch collection one has also speaks alot about the watch collector himself or herself..just like how the kind of clothes, car, accessories one associates themselves with.

Today my humble collection rotates around Timex tri-athlon, several Lum-Tecs, Stowa Ikaru, 2 Stadlins swiss manual and a Seiko 5. I still have a quartz swiss watch for the more dressy functions whereby as a lady, I need to have a dainty looking watch :)

In time to come over the next DECADES!! I would like to add more watches with complications such as moonphase, power reserve, gmt, alarms, triple calendars, skeletons and the ultimate perpetual calendars. Then I think I will take a hiatus from watch collecting.. hahahahha... or maybe switch to POCKET WATCHES...love them for their vintage old-school nostalgic feel.

i've always love watches.  I saw a digital watch for first time when i was 7.  i practically took a chair and sat in front of the watch (while the man was still wearing it!!) and was intrigued by how the numbers changed from 0 to 1 to 2 to 3...

but always thought that as long it can tell time, they are all same..

until i began to surf the net last year.......and saw all the reviews, pics, ...... :Blue: :Blue:

Good stories on the way our members start their watch collecting hobby . Please keep them coming. I have always been fascinated by the backlight in digital watches myself. always amazed :o by the way it can tell the time in pitch darkness but never own a g shock so the interest died off after a while. only got reinfected after my teenage years.

The following piece was written on my Blog way back to 2007. - On collecting Rolexes.

dc

During my younger days, watches with Cyclops lens were always assumed /or thought to be as Rolexes. Then, only a handful few watches come along with the Cyclops. These Cyclops lens represent an unique way at reading the date.

Those days, I am one of the wannabes - who wanted a real Rolex but could not afford one. So, I bought myself the nearest look alike watch - the Titoni, ComosKing which comes completely with look & Cyclops. In my primitive mind set, any watch that comes along with these lenses - would look grand like a Rolex.

In my country (Malaysia), Rolex owners proudly but discreetly display their time pieces at any given opportunities. From a distance, many (people) would recognize their Rolexes - thanks to the reflective glare emitting from the small but distinctively & unmistakably Cyclops lens. They can smell your Rolexes miles away. Take away the Cyclops, the very same people won't come near to you, and would reject the watch altogether. Air King doesn’t appeal to them. So do a Sea Dweller.

Innocently, they would ask "Is that a Rolex"? Why NO lens ah ?!!” Their comments, traditionally, Rolexes must comes together with Cyclops...without it...it’s NOT a Rolex.

Wearing a real Rolex, has that kind of feeling great, an achievement (but not proud), whereas, wearing an imitation would not have the same feeling as wearing the real thing!. Wearing a fake Rolex is after all...cheating on oneself. Just my 2 cents worth.

Wao~ Great stories

As for me, i love watches since young... very young i guess and i still remember i like to take my dad's watches to put near to my ears to enjoy the "tick-tak-tick-tak" sound... back then, i have no idea at all what sound that was ;D

my first watch which i paid from my own hard earn money was a Swatch. I received my first salary of around MYR80 for working part time during school holiday. I then ask my cousin who work in a watch shop what watch can i get for MYR80...then she show me a series fo Swatch latest collection (that time (back in 1995/6), Swatch rules!!) and the cheapest i can effort and I like was close to MYR100 even after her staff purchase... still short of MYR20, darn.... but my cousin was kind enough to top up the balance and bought me that watch :D

Since then i was wearing my Swatch till i graduated my college and Uni. The Swatch is still with me but no longer working. The batt is dead for sure and the crown and hands are not working as well. I guess i will just keep it for sentimental value sake

My first SEIKO was a SEIKO-5 given by my friend as a birthday gift... still working as of now and i just notice it's using magic level on its winding system. SEIKO really value for money

I got real serious in collecting (or i should say buying) watches since year 2006. That time i was alone in US/UK and have nothing's better to do, i thought it will be good if i go online and start learn more about watches to fill up my time. Then i bought some vintage pieces from the BAY, some Oris, Omega, Longines, etc... nothing expensive but just a lot of watches i got over a month or 2...

My first real expensive was an Omega Moonwatch which i bought from a friend of mine, Henry :D (a watch-maniac too, was intro to me by Lim (sshark)). Since then, there is no turning back.. hahahhaa.. my highest record? I bought 4 watches in 1 month. I got my SD, GP chrono, Mark Xvi and Port 7 days in 2008 Jan. Real crazy!!!!

Then, was crazy about panerai in year 2007 and 2008, bought over 30 straps when i have just 1 panerai  :HammerHead:

As of today, i start to "re-organize" my collection, recently i have sold few rolexes and panerai because i don't really wear them now and i thought if i can still sell them with good price, cash is always better then keeping them...

This year, i only got myself 2 watches so far, a SEIKO Tuna and a used SEIKO GS Hi-Beat... a JLC on the way ;p but hopefully that's all for this year.. kakakakkaka.. i'm sure Danny is smiling behind me now  ;D

Last but not least, all these years, i have bought a lot and of course sold a lot too, making $? No way!!  But most importantly, I'm happy meeting a lot of friends who love watches like i do and we finally setting up a forum which belong to Malaysia last year

Cheers!
scott

My story starts since I was about 11 years old. I like the gadget the watch have.... Casio... which can do more than just telling the time. But as a kid from a average family I'm just hopping my dad buy me a watch. At that time, I'm just wearing his watch & keep changing because he got a couple of watches that time. Maybe because of the rapid changing using the watch develop this interest. My dad bought me a Boy London watch.... a very nostalgic piece for me... still ticking after 20 years... :Jumping:

At 12 years old, I'm admire my friend's Casio Databank 30 which can store phone number & have many function... The interest grew more until I get my 1st Casio... A Databank 50. Hehe...  :Dancing_banana: ... Start by that, any watch retailer that I saw, I will give a visit... My mom bought me some new watch for me & I had a couple of watches in my simple collection....    . I also made a scrap book which has all the watch pictures that I like.... To bad.... & really frustrated.... I threw it away.....  :'( :'( :'(

University year, I only bought Casio. Buy a new one when the old one is broke. Casio lah... murah... Hehe... But that time of period... my interest is still there but in hibernate mode.... I only started collecting watches as a serious hobby for about 3 years now after started working... As the interest come back, that make me to do a blog about it... just for sharing my hobby anyone & to make new friends... Thank god... All my friend supporting me. Thank you all....

I dont really remember how and when ???????

What i could recall, when i was really young, i always want a watch...at that time, DIGITAL seem awesome...

My dad bought me my first watch - a Q&Q...gold color, i have no idea why but it seem almost everytime, when my dad bought me a watch it must be in gold color despite me never liking it...hehehe...after the Q&Q i had another digital pasar malam nike watch which i thought it was the original..the real deal...silly me

At my teenage life, i fall in love with G-Shock..Spend countless hours at watch shop even at that age admirig watches especially the G-Shock..finally bought one when i was 15...and lose it when i was 16...that start my clumsy history of watch collecting...To date i have lost A Guess, A G-Shock, A Casio, A designer brand watch (which i forgot the brand name - given by the interior designer of the boutique who's trying to woo my sis), and the worst lost...a cerutti, wedding gift...was robbed when i was in Bulgaria...damn you bulgarian..

I guess, i have always love watches even when I am young, but only now i could afford to actually collect...

Nothing impressive in my collection...heheheheh

but my interest turn to passion about 5 years ago...i dont really collect at that time, owning one at a time ....financially i am not that strong those days....

Recently, i was inspired to combine my passion with other interest...writing...Hence working on a blog using an old blog i had...deleted all the content and start fresh...I have two objective...one is to share my interest and two to improve my crappy english writing....Mr duniajam has as well inspired me to become a knowledgeable blog writer...for which he own a very interesting blog...Funny i learned that the more i write the more i learned on watches...

In addition , i dont know why since i was a kid, i never like small watches...i always fancy a big watch...bold and obvious...the biggest i have now would be a 52mm but also learned that is my final call...enuff is enuff...no more than 47mm....hehehehhe

my stupidest purchase would be in 1997...the super ugly Spoon watch, not even the real one...a fake one...chrome plated...nylon strap with velcro....that cost me some fortune (i dont have much money when i was a kid) but only gives me satisfaction for two weeks...i cant bare the thought that I am wearing a fake at that time...I dont really remember what happened to the watch after that....

Now, i start looking into homage watches, but i doubt that would give me long lasting satisfaction....Also now focusing on unique watches...hope to be able to own one or two limited edition someday

From all the stories it can be seen that in most cases, the g shock watches seem to be the watch that start the watch collecting craze. Then as time goes by, bigger wallets means bigger purchases . Keep em stories coming :Dancing_banana:

As for me now, my liking is towards memories & nostalgic..... also a rare & a stop production pieces. Some may not be anyone cup of tea... but I'm ok with it. Hehe... ;D As long as I'm happy, I'm on a good track.  :-* Only buy a watch of your interest, not other's interest.

my watch collection just started about a year ago...that time I'm purchased a pair of Tissot PRS100 for me and my wife...
I don't know why, I started to surf and read more about watches in the net...before that, normally I'll always google about handphones, lap top and all IT gadgets...
After read a lot of watch forum in the net, I said to myself that I need an auto/mechanical watch...then, started to window shopping whenever have time. Even sometimes my wife and kid need to follow me into the watch shop when we're outing  :)
My 1st purchase is Longines Conquest in black dial...A month later, I grab an Oris F1 day date in white. I give excuse to my wife that I need a white dial watch  ;D
After 2 months, my desire to own another watch started again. I found a white Seiko samurai and immediately purchase it. That the closing for the 2009  8)
This year, my only purchased so far is Ball Stormchaser. It's been 4 months from my last purchase, even my wife also wondering if I'm no longer have interest in collecting watch. I said of course not. To many wish list, but little money heh heh  ;D
That's my storyline as a beginner in watch world...
