Title: Going to buy my first rolex this weekend!
Post by: Kopassus77 on December 03, 2013, 12:35:14 PM
After a year of saving up for it, I finally have enough. As it drew closer to the weekend, I'm having second thoughts of purchasing it since it's gonna take a lot of chunk of my wallet. I'm a fan of watches in general, rolex especially. A buddy of mine said that you should treat it as an investment. A quick google produced a lot of heated arguments of whether it's really an investment or not (In other forums). As someone who is fairly new regarding this matter, I could use some pointers  ;D. Oh, I'm planning to get a Rolex submariner 16610 year 2000. Kalau ada silap kata, maafkan lah daku  :Praying:

Get it if you heart tell you so (with moolah in hand, of course).
And please don't treat it as an investment.
If you want investment, put you money in ASB.

p/s: oh ya, congrats on your (incoming) submariner date  Waiting for the pictures  :Dancing_banana:

grats! agree not to think of it as an investment, think of it more like a reward.

Why'd you pick a 16610? Did you contemplate getting other watches? Or maybe other Rolex models?

I've always had this thing with submariners that I just love. I did, but this is the only thing I could afford at the moment without having to eat maggi everyday for the next 2 yrs :D.

When I bought my first proper watch, I mandi bunga, pull nose hair, wear fresh underwear, and all the necessary works... just to be sure the experience is good and memorable! It's almost like a date, welcoming my second wife...

Congratulations and do remember to share some wrist shot!

I really like the 16610 too, nearly bought one earlier this year. Just curious because at the pre-owned price point there are so many other watches to consider.

-Brand new Tudor Pelagos
-Omega PO
-Sea Dweller perhaps?
-GMT Coke
-IWC Ingy
-Damasko DK10
-A GS perhaps?

Or.. save longer and get a 116610, DAMN! decisions decisions. Anyway glad you already made up your mind bro  . I am still so undecided..

Why thank you for the ideas good chap, I'll make sure I hire some dikir barat and have a kenduri afterwards. Tapi kenduri just serve maggi la for obvious financial reasons hurhurhur

Interestingly, I did consider Sea Dwellet and GMT coke but I was to swayed by the Submariner. The Submariner looked like she's about to ride me all night, with a hefty price tag of course, but all night riding sounds like a good deal.

Firstly, watches are never really an investment. If buying new from AD, expect to lose 30% or more as soon as you walk out the door. If buying a used one from a grey dealer, you still expect to lose at least 10-15% if you regret the purchase and want to return it. Ten years later might be a different story....

Secondly, buy what you really want, not what you can afford now. If you can't really afford what you want now, keep saving, provided your rate of savings is higher than the expected rate of price increases.

Many love the Submariner Date because everywhere you read, it's the iconic Rolex. But is it iconic to you or are you just getting swayed by public opinion? And yet there are other who think the real iconic Rolex is the Submariner (without the date). And if you start seeing everyone else wearing that black Submariner Date, are you going to feel upset as just being part of the herd?

Sorry if this post gives you second thoughts but if you're still determined after reading this far, maybe the Submariner Date is for you.

Normal watch is not an investment for sure. your choice would ensure minimum loss should you decide to sell it later. work harder to save more money after you join this forum, you will find your 1st luxury watch is never enough for you. ;)

Congrats! it sure feel marvelous after work hard and save hard for 1 year and finally able to get what you have longed for so long!

When I bought my 1st Rolex, I went to sleep wearing it..No kidding, & it was the first time in my life i went to bed without taking off my watch. & it feels so good (well, apart from sleeping with the opp sex I guess!!  :Laughing_on_floor:),So I can understand your excitement!! As for me I never treat my watch as an investment, more like a treasure I guess. Fact is I love wearing them, cleaning them up with tooth brush, winding the manual watches everyday or just simply watching them spinning from my watch winder boxes. Simply lovin' it. So congrates in advance & wear it in good health!!

Btw, my first Rollie was Sub Date..wink2, ;D

Congrats ! love your watch and make it worth every penny. You can't go wrong with the 16610, it's one of my fav. watch or must have in my collection. I will flip watches but not the 16610, it'll we be my keeper !

A little update, I went to meet the seller that I was supposed to deal today at his shop in times square. Turns out, the watch that was posted as "with certificate and box" is not what as promised. Very disappointed. Looked around for nearby shops around the area but all of them are without proper papers.

I am very skeptical about buying without the papers and might need to chuck in more cash that I was originally planned for that extra legit-ness. Overall it was frustrating day for me and I felt I was sort of "conned" in a way. Plus, being a newbie my knowledge of fake rolexes is limited and I could only get info from the internet. One of the shops I went even said "Don't buy from that shop (the shop that i was initially planned to buy it from), because they change the parts and bla bla bla" so...I was confused even more lol.

Carrying all that cash around is not particularly my cup of tea either. So far, I've only covered times square area and have not ventured anywhere else. I'm might try this shop in Subang Jaya, ss14. If anyone could give me a recommended used watch store that could ease this pain (lol) feel free to pm me. PS. I went alone so I have no second opinion from someone. I might try again next week. I felt so bleghhh

Indeed, was hoping to get it today. I guess, I have to postpone it until I find a more legit store...or find more cash  ;D

You might get good bargains from the Classified section in this forum. Read the recommendations; many forum-members have good experiences with these merchants. I think if you PM some of the members who posted their buying experience, they might give you some pointers too. It's certainly better than hopping from one shopping mall to another with cash in the pocket looking for your grail..

Joke you say? We'll see young man, we'll see....

hahahahahahaha I just didn't want to offend any female members  :P

Hahaha...no worries cos 'female' members r very rare in this forum....for us (female) one man is enough, the rest is history  ;D

You could check out reputable grey importers like TP at Fahrenheit 88 (ex KL plaza) or BSC.  Discount on new watches are very much better than the ADs.  Happy hunting.

amen  :Praying: :Praying: I'm actually considering GMT master II now other than the steel sub (either those 2). All in all, amidst the frustration, today was a good experience. Hope I can get the new catch in time for next year's MWF gathering, can't wait to meet with the sifus here and learn more  ;D

OH, actually wanted to ask this to the rolex seniors here; Do all models of rolexes (especially subs / GMT Master II) engraved / laser printed with the "rolexrolexrolex" on the edges of it? Checked out one of the no date subs models today and there werent any. I'm not sure if only certain models has it, or it was a fake. There was one store that I went that a sub model with a very flimsy steel strap, I instantly felt it was a red flag for me to get out from that place. (I suspect they've changed the steel strap with a cheaper one). There's also one more shop I went, a 1980-1990 ish sub date, very sturdy and solid and almost copped this one for around 14k. But I noticed how the rotating bezel was VERY loose; a red flag instantly popped on to my head, so I head out and left the mall and proceeded to weep on the corner of my room as I reached home  :Laughing_on_floor:. Bear in mind that all these infos I had is purely from watching videos and reading up on how to spot a fake. It might not be fake, I might just be a bit paranoid, but I would rather be extra careful with it and take it slow..just like intercourse.

Seems to me you are a very brave man! You might want to check out this website "minus4plus6" and the resource section of this forum, to find out more of the Rolex models, their history, evolution, types of bracelets, markings, care, etc.. The Watch Snob column in the Askmen blog is also quite informative for topics on watches generally. Being better informed will make you a happier owner of your first Rolex!

Trying to buy a used Rolex can be a minefield for someone new to Rolex. I truly suggest you keep your cash in the bank and then take your time looking for that piece you want. Or buy from an AD. Or buy from a seller you can trust. Not a good idea to snag one at a good price and spend endless nights wondering if anything about it was fake.

Hold on your cash and find a good one with paper and good condition. Im sure its not hard to find a Sub as its quite a common watch in pre own shop nowadays. Sub date only has the ROLEXROLEX word from M series onwards meanwhile the 16710 will never have the ROLEXROLEX word in the inner bezel.

Yeah the bracelet might be filmsy for the earlier model and its not a defect though. Its less flimsy for the one without pin hole Sub date or better still a more solid for the ceramic 116610.

All the best mate

An expert has spoken

Quite frankly, Sub Date is quite a common watch and unless a buyer really knows the seller, the ones in better condition always end up with preferred customers. I would suggest the buyer try to work with one of the regular sellers here. Hinit Hint!

Sorry to hear that, but fret not, you still have many options to get a good rolex. I bought a new sub ceramic 114060 last month from an AD with decent discount. I am happy with my decision and the watch is great and keeping very good time. Hope you will find your dream rolex soon. Btw the gmt master II is very popular now and most AD selling at retail and stock is low.

Hi kopassus77, sad to heard about your encounter . I am from Singapore and new to this forum, but also a great fan of Rolex watches. I have owned quite a no of rolex , tudor and omega . As I also travels to KL quite regularly, in fact I noticed that the prices of high end watches is higher compared to spore. I would suggest u make a trip down spore ( very cheap if u fly air asia) come take a look at the watch market here which is more competitive . There are tons of shop here selling preowned complete set of rolex with very mint conditions. If u need help , just pm or email me . I be glad to help a young chap like u to fulfils his dreams.

u are a lucky chap which can get your rolex at 22. I got mine first rolex only at 36 and like what they say ...u never stop at one.

Lastly, words of advice is try out the 16610 and the 116610 , I have both and I can assure u that the feel and outlook of both watches is totally different once u wear it. If u prefer the iconic and classy design then go for 16610 or go for 116610 if u want a beefier and bulkier outlook. Try it and see which sings to u.

I'd be very interested to hear where the shops you are talking about in SG are. I was in and out a couple of stores 2 weeks ago and after doing the conversion rate, the prices seem higher than over in Malaysia. Do PM me details of shops if you could as I will be dropping in again real soon.

There are a few shops in golden landmark area in spore that are specialized in Rolex.( preowned) maybe u can try p watch as they sell preowned rolex mainly complete set with papers and box. Price is nego and competitive as they do export of watches . They also do not charge gst . Recently I just bought a D series explorer 2 (complete set with papers, very mint) bracelet are also tight and straight from them. Before that I had actually saw a similar set in JB but after the conversion , it's still about RM 1.2k cheaper.

Lastly, just to highlight that I do not represent any of the shop in Singapore. I am just a watch lover and I believe that sharing is caring. To those bros who are keen to shop for watches in spore below are some of the reliable dealers that u can visit. It might not nesasary be cheaper but definitely u will have a wider range if u are buying preowned set. Best of all is that they are so close to each other so u can easier visit 8-10 shops in search of your holy Gail.

If u need help, feel free to pm or email me. Good luck

Yes, most of them are service oriented as they are so near to each other so you are free to try and ask....they know who's the boss so don't worry. Recently , when I decided to get the explorer 2 for my wife , we visited 6 shops and compare prices , condition and finally decided to buy from pwatch as the salesman is patient and explained to my wife on the history and specs between explorer and turn o graph.

Best of all is that they are so close to each other so u can easier visit 8-10 shops in search of your holy Gail.

If u need help, feel free to pm or email me. Good luck

Are these shops friendly to those who might just want to go in and look around on the Rolex stocks that they carry?

Yes, most of them are service oriented as they are so near to each other so you are free to try and ask....they know who's the boss so don't worry. Recently , when I decided to get the explorer 2 for my wife , we visited 6 shops and compare prices , condition and finally decided to buy from pwatch as the salesman is patient and explained to my wife on the history and specs between explorer and turn o graph.

   Very good info! Planning for a trip to Singapore towards end of the month.. I might just be lucky and catch myself a BLNR or a LVc! Thanks

Hi kennT, just a little update of prices for u since u are coming . Parallel dealers selling BLNR at $10888 and Hulk at $10500 if u buy from them compare to big brand like hr or c selling much more premium .

I will likely be in SG around the end of the month too. A pm with the censored list of shops to visit would be great.

For those bro who PM me and ask , all the shop that I mentioned have website.
Secondly, the good location to hunt will be bencoolen area , golden landmark is just within walking distance . That area will easier have est 15 shops. Another place will be orchard Far East plaza. Total in Far East area also around 8 shops. All that I mentioned are preowned shops.

If we're planning to buy in SG, what's the best payment method other than cash? (got no credit cards). Should I convert my RM in Malaysia for SGD or convert my RM in SG? Of course this is just..pre planning hehe

For members who aren't particularly familiar with Singapore, could you prepare a list of shop names and location, website address and maybe also opening hours for our hunting pleasure? Time will be short for watch hunt so with a good list, we can cover as many locations in as little time as possible.

Many thanks in advance for the PM.

Shop around for exchange rates as part of the watch hunt. When amounts go to the tens of thousands, the figures after the dot do make a difference. I would generally think that credit card exchange rates would not be as good as a money changer but I wouldn't know for sure. I believe they use the TT/OD rates for the day plus some transaction charges. Ask the bank beforehand.

A lot of bros have pm me on more information of watch shops in Singapore . So to cut the story short and make your hunt easier . Make a trip to bencoolen plaza , their are many shops on the same floor selling watches , rolex, iwc , pam , even to casio or seiko. After which, popby to golden landmark hotel which is 5mins walking distance . There is a shopping mall inside the hotel which also have many shops selling preowned rolex.

As for website , just google the names that I had posted in the pervious thread and u sure can find. Normally, all of them closes around 7pm . As I was informed by mod not to list out all the shops name and received too many pm, those who are keen , please read from this thread and google their website. If still cannot find, then I try my best to help u but rewards is kopi and roti on u if I am in Subang

to me, submariner is one of the most iconic watches in the world. i keep coming back to it after flipping other models. its bezel insert is black, hence its overall size looks slightly bigger than models with steel bezels like exp 2 (16570) n daytona. 16610 n earlier sub models give me the kind of understated feeling of low profile luxurious timepiece as it's not blingy. it goes very well with any kind of outfit. u will never go wrong with it. hope u guys enjoy the hunt.

Don't bother about them , bro...those motherfxxkers always looks ppl down when u go in and try. There was one incident when I was in berms and t shirt after my badminton game so went in one local ad in spore with my wife and try out a few models as I was planning a birthday present for her. The salesman look me from head to toe and never bother to serve me. I don't give a shit but continue to tekan him and ask him take out the watches. I leave the shop without buying . Next day, I go back to the shop again. When the salesman saw me , he rush to serve me but I told the shop manager that I don't want his service and prefer to buy from the other salesman cos he had treated me badly the day before.

Nowadays , when I go there, that fellow treats me like a king even I just go in and try for fun...cash is king bro...don't bother about how they looked at u.

u may also consider gmt 16710 (discontinued) with pepsi insert. it's another iconic pc since it was first introduced in 50's. it can be recognized from far. the pepsi insert is not found in the current modern gmts.

if u go to AD, be prepared to lose a chunk of cash should u wanna let go of it the next few years  ;)

I have heard horror stories about people buying Rolexes with the movements inside swapped with an inferior one. Does the RSC authentication include opening the caseback to verify the movement?

swapping the movements? u mean replacing the original one with the old but authentic movement as inferior or another ETA movement (non-rolex) movement as inferior?

Yes.
They will give you a verbal confirmation about the authenticity of your case, movement and bracelet.

since u pay for the verification cost, RSC will for sure open the caseback to check the authenticity of the watch.

Agree!

I didn't get the sub or the GMT master (yet, hopefully by this year again) but I settled for The Datejust. I was quite surprised on how I don't look too 'old' in it  Plus, I got it for my birthday..which is today.

Happy birthday Kopassus...I hope you had a great time. But with such a beautiful looking DJ, it is hard not to be smiling from ear to ear while having a good time. Judging from your nick, I would say that you are 37. And being 37, you will not look too old wearing a Rolex. In fact it will set you apart from most 37 year olds, it will say that  you have class and is able to carry it.

Happy Birthday Kopassus 77 .

What a Beautiful Rolex Datejust..

Just a kind reminder that you have just taken "YOUR FIRST DOSE OF POISON". What A Wonderful POISON I would say. The second dose of POISON will be around every Watch Shop in town... :Laughing_on_floor: I got my first potion of poison a few years back and have not looked back since. Now I own about half a dozen rolex.

Dont worry about the price depreciation of your watch as you would have gained plenty of Wonderful Experience, Self Esteem, Exclusiveness, Status over the next few years wearing your ROLEX. These valuable experience gained will be worth every ringgit you spent on your first ROLEX.

Cheers.

Thank you Jimmy, I've already eyeing on my second poison hahaha

grats! agree not to think of it as an investment, think of it more like a reward.

Why'd you pick a 16610? Did you contemplate getting other watches? Or maybe other Rolex models?

I've always had this thing with submariners that I just love. I did, but this is the only thing I could afford at the moment without having to eat maggi everyday for the next 2 yrs :D.

I concurred.
Submariner - Youll find plenty of people have it. Being apart of the heard is not bad but for that price? unless its your third watch or so... why not

My advise, do you research, think about what you really want & take your time. Aim for pre-owned of you are on budget.

I remember the old car that I drove at 22 yo, its 2nd hand value was not even one third of Rolex.

But it's very true that youngsters nowadays are very capable and most of them pick-up new things very fast with a short learning curve.

I had a sub 16610 which I just traded to a shop for a deepsea. Bought it new in 2002. It was problem free throughout my years of ownership, 1 service in between. Would recommend it as a first Rolex to anyone. Was mine too. Would have kept it but decided, after 12 years it time for an upgrade. Between the 16610 & 116610, I still prefer the 16610 for its classic looking case. I find the 116610 looking a tad too 'dress watch'. As for holding value, I traded in for a profit of RM3k. Would have been more had i been patient enough to sell it on the secondary market. I had initially planned to sell it for RM18.5k but finally traded it in for RM16k to save me the time & hassle of going through one meet to another. Hope this helps..

Put investment only as a supporting factor. If you like it that much, you wont be willing to part with it anyways. Enjoy the whole experience of purchasing the watch!
