Why Rolex ? Share your thoughts !
Rolex has built itself over years that it has come to a situation where it is "THE" watch to acquired if one is to be moved to the upper crust of our society.
And they deserved it cos they have strive in every aspect of watch making that it's inconceivable to think otherwise.
Rightly or wrongly so does not matter cos the perception is so in born that ask any layman on the street which watch is "the" watch, and you can be almost certain it's a Rolex.
For me too,my first "real" watch is a Rolex and it's unthinkable to imagine my collection without a Rolex among the rest.
-
Rolex has a great history! But most of them, they know great name (Rolex) but not their great history. There is a mindset, the person who wears a Rolex, he/she considers OLD.. FASHION ? Come on, ( Vintage Never Goes Out of Style ) I'm a collector of Mini Classic and RGMT as well. Some of them may ask me, why don't you get a new one instead of getting a used one ? Frankly, I'd answer you IF I think you need to know the answer. Nowadays, money talks ! You have the cash, you get the thing. But, Used/Vintage. It depends on your Knowledge, Luck, timing and so on. It brings me surprise at the end of the day.
-
timeless design..ehem2.. ;D
-
I think Rolex do have SOME sentimental value & some sort of long term 'investment' so to speak...
As for me once you got Rolex, you'll begin to 'browse' to something even better e.g AP or Patek.
But beware as you might turn into WIS in the making cos i seriously think i'm turning into one of them! :Laughing_on_floor:
-
Hey, dun lar talk about this. If not then other ppl would go and complain in Facebook say MWF is only allows discussion about Rolex and grand seiko.
-
why Rolex? The robustness, the reliability, the accuracy, the timeless look. The question to ask is why not?
-
Quite true but then again not much discussion about anything else gives ppl the impression.
OK, back to the topic. For me it's not so much about the brand. It's always the watch. I buy a Daytona because I like the Daytona not because it's a Rolex. The same thing goes for JLC. I want a Reverso, it just happen that the brand is JLC.
I would not buy an Omega because it is an Omega or a GS because it's the Grand Seiko. I have to like the watch.
Safe to say I can find model I don't like from all manufacturer and the opposite is true as well.
In the end the answer is:"Why? Because I like this watch"

Yes, well said Tyler  we buy because we love the watch, is not the brand , no point you buy the brand but you don really like the design of the watch.

Thanks for the comment but I must be honest. I do own a few Rolex and I find the movement of the modern (post 90s) fair way better than the old ones.
I don't whether this is only true to Rolex or is a phenomenon spread across the industry.

Buy the watch because u like it and not because if the brand. If it comes to robustness.....etc.... I can't see why an Oris or Omega or Sinn diver would lose out...
If it's because if the brand, then I am sorry to say that there are more brands to show that "you have made it".
Rolex is a middle class aspiration to crudely put it. To circle with the big sharks just look at what's on the wrist of our ruling party class and also those whom watchanish is mingling among.
I belong to the plebeian lower middle class and this is as good as I can afford. If the sky's the limit.... ;D
Having said that, I just like the looks of a Sub.
-
Also it happens that the heroes of yesteryear wears the "Gshock" of that era traversing the white tundra of the poles, sailing solo across the oceans and diving deep into the abyss wearing that watch....
So to lie to myself and my much mundane city suburban droll.... I can dream a bit
-
Damn, if Terence is lower middle class, I'm definitely belongs to the hard-core poor ;D
Really? no Rolex owners here had a slight thought of its good resale value when buying 1? Then I must be the weird one here.
Of course, I like the design of some of their models too, like the Sub, SD, Explorer.
-
not really a brand snob but when i saw a shimmering blue dial dj2 on display, ( u know the saying watch 'sings' to u..)
i knew i had to get it sooner or later..
tried it on was even impressed with quality metal feel.. too impressed didnt even notice centre link z polished..
long story short, that weekend i kiasuly bought it.. ( was checking out something else)
above average resale value helps in case wanto flip it.
-
rolex is a good n quality brand..the problem is a lot of replica watches outside there..
-
Coz Rolex is without doubt the most famous mechanical luxury watch brand in the world. Period. What people say positively about Rolex - robustness, reliability, accuracy, post sales service, resale value, timeless design, etc - are brand attributes they truly experience and associate with Rolex, hence the support of many loyalists and enthusiasts. What many owners of Rolex are unaware of is the Rolex hallmark for incremental evolution over many decades, one that has been honed to perfection, backed by a very strong in house capability for volume manufacturing, engineering and R&D. In essence, Rolex is both form and substance personified. Therein lies its wide appeal.
-
why too many replicas outside, one thing because it is famous brand, one more thing i think because its design easy to duplicate..that my opinion :)

1. Some designs are appealing to me.
2. Reliable and rugged enough for daily use.
-
A crown for every achievement.

One of the reasons why I bought a Rolex is the fact that 50, 100 years from now, Rolex will still be around making watches. Many other manufactures cannot claim that, and will one day, fade into obscurity.
-
Really or not? ;)
-
becos if u go to pajak gadai they will not say no
-
Hahaha of course most of the time they would not say no..... But the question everytime is "would you say yes to their offer?"

IMHO I don't think any manufacturer will or has claimed as such. Even if they do make such a claim, will anyone seriously believe them? ;D We live in uncertain times....asteroids, earthquakes, typhoon, global warming.... :'(

When celebrating a new born, you buy a Rolex.
When celebrating a graduation, you buy a Rolex.

When tying the knot and getting marry, you buy a Rolex.
When celebrating wedding anniversary, you buy a Rolex.
When you need to pass on an inheritance piece, you buy a Rolex.
When you give presents to your parents, in law, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters and whats not, you buy a Rolex.

Walau, David u said it all already, no one can continue...
-
I second to that David .
Beside recently I have came out with my own perception that ...Hahaha... I believe that Rolex make a very good investment , it's even more stable than our own currency the Ringgit , besides I believe it's comparable to other commodities , it's an resilient asset. Well, it won't earn you big time but prices are stable relatively to standard of living . Since when you hear a Rolex is for cheap sale and since when you ever hear a Rolex is at its lowest price level given a 5 year period . Imagine you have purchased 2 million ringgit of Rolex watches 15 year ago and kept them insafe brandnew. And how much can you sell them for today? ( especially the sport pedigree )
Rolex does make good a workhorse also with its reliable movements . Ps these are all entirely my own perception and I probably just making all out on my own ,,,hahahahaha !
-
I buy a Rolex for it's history and pedigree. More importantly, I buy it because I like watches and I like the design of the watch...

Every Tom, Dick & Harry will say Rolex as the epitome of luxury & expensive watches..
Not many Tom, Dick & Harry know about Patek or AP..Put it side by side & definitely those who wear Rolex wil garner the most attention..
Most Tom, Dick & Harry have never even heard name such as MB&F, De Bethune, Urwek etc to even bother how ridiculously expensive this "watches" are..
Its like the King sitting proudly on its throne..He might be old, he might not be the smartest, or the strongest..but it generate respect & appreciation from everyone..Hail Rolex!!

Rolex is a brand
A brand is an emotion n perception of human
Rolex is always a tough well built, reliable n valuable watch.
Rolex able to maintain this for so many yrs... Meaning those perception is quite true!
Brand always about 2 axis in a chart
X - awareness
Y - goodness
Rolex scoring high in both
How Rolex does it?
Gd marketing strategies - visible everywhere, gd sponsoring...
Gd after sales service center - accessible, parts available, fee reasonable...
Gd value - pricing control
Instead of occasions think of buying rolex
I will say
Ppl do not know watches buy Rolex
Ppl know watches also buy Rolex
Underground ppl like Rolex
Up town ppl like Rolex

True... only that if all of us can afford a rolex for every each occasion.
I used to detest rolex as its like an "uncle" brand - like mercs, beemers ... but I guess once you learn to appreciate the value in each of the money you spend - it is the fine details that you learn to love.
... unless I am getting to an uncle stage that is.... :Laughing_on_floor:

Their marketing team choose to stick to what they have done for long time and had awesome marketing campaign. If not rolex is not what today rolex.
For me, rolex = well designed movement, good design (sea-dweller) and manageable watch size for me.
I don bother about the "I have made it" or "its a investment" or "showing off" part. I just like rolex because of the above mentioned attribute. Others reasoning pertaining to why rolex are just some bullshit in my opinion.
Just buy whichever watch that you like and not because other ppl are wearing it

Chris, what underground people???
-
To me Rolex is a good watch... it make it so well that you can always have it by your side to tell time. Also a watch that can go through hell and back by your side still working. The movement is very good that even though is mass produce but it keeps it standard from one watch to another.
Of course when you really compare to PP, AP, Piaget ect ect. Those watch have really good movement and body finish. Each part of the watch is carefully handmade to perfection, for the price you pay is totally different standard.
But if you have to compare this watch for toughness none can beat the Rolex! Is truly an over engineered piece of watch.
cheers!

all came back with same answer...go Rolex first..IWC is nice, Panerai is full of history, Omega is quality, blah blah...but get a Rolex first...
I started looking closer at what's all this Rolex madness is all about....

Interesting. I avoided Rolex and Panerai like a plague until recently.
My problem was I don't see anything interesting on the modern model. When the madness of overinflated price cool down in 2009 I half lie to myself and bought a Milgauss at retail. That was the first and last modern Rolex I ever bought.
Most of the stuff I like are from the past. LOL maybe I'm getting old.

Wow! I am in full agreement with your comments on the brand in the older thread. I could not have expressed it any better than you did!

Rolex is the super heavy weight in the watch industry. like it or not it is the undisputable most well-known luxury watch. but like a double sided sword, due to its over-popularity, many watch enthusiast find it "too common" with its mass produced product, and started to opt for other more sophisticated and exclusive "hand made" pieces...
Whether hand made is better than mass production, is another question.

Tsk, you see, that's where you got it wrong. Watches in many ways are like underwear. You don't openly show it around, but sometimes you get a glimpse of it (chao gong), and you only share your opinions on it with someone close enough or has similar fetish interest. So obviously, one would feel more unique wearing something less common or more exotic (interchangeable with erotic in some cases). On the outside, you should normally blend in just like anyone else...

One may double check whether I quoted my original posting correctly and in its entirety ;)
I'd like to be clear that I'm not taking sides but just an observation here..
Exclusivity as with other things is always relative.. ;)
200 units of a certain auto marque versus 40,000 of another sold per year, can be considered relatively exclusive..
A bespoke shirt that is tailored from the material available to anyone walking into the tailor is still relatively exclusive when compared to a shirt made in the thousands by a sweatshop and bought at a night market.
I don't think that I used the word 'one of a kind" rather it was 'exclusivity...
Again our interpretations may differ and its perfectly ok..
To be fair however, sidestreaker did in fact say 'reduce' not completely avoid..
Anyhow I think we should all look at the big picture here and take this as purely a discussion and an exchange of opinions, not of absolute fact..
Its only a watch and a hobby...so let's all chill...
In closing, although I currently do not have any Rollie left, I'm in fact looking to buy back a 16600 or even better, a 16660 provided it's in mint condition and at fair market value..
In its own way its still relatively exclusive... model wise if not brand wise... :Laughing_on_floor:
Did I just create another controversial topic here again.. let the debate begin...
<<As we all know luxury watches are beyond telling time, instead they are an extension of your personality something like the luxury car you drive or a bespoke suit you wear. When one uses a luxury item it is partly the exclusivity ( this is of course again relative) that adds value or if you like , the snob appeal which is part of owning luxurious goods besides the inherent quality and refinement of the product.>>
Then u must be driving something very unique and dresses like the male version of Gaga or else you'll just be a plebeian like the rest of the population.
Agree, they are big in many ways. Below is a link to a survey on the most valuable Swiss Brand (in terms of market worth)

JOS2012 previous post in the other thread sums up all the reason why I'm not wearing one. No doubt Rolex does great watches and one can't go wrong in choosing any of the models/range. I just want to reduce the chance of walking into a meeting room wearing a similar watch to the next person.
-
Exclusivity comes with money.
Unfortunately, those like me with limited amount to spend will have to settle for mass produced luxury goods.
I will leave the ultra high end luxury to those that have a bank account to support such purchases.
As to the question of why Rolex, I guess Chris and DC have hit the spot.
The 1st watch I got for my dad is a Victorinox.
He was ok with it.
I got him an Omega next.
He was ok with it too.
Then when I got him a Rolex.
He said to me... enough son... this is enough for me.
1st watch I got for my mom is a Longines.
She was ok with it.
When asked what she wants if I can really afford one later on?
She said I want a Rolex.
1st watch I got for my wife is a Fossil.
She was ok with it.
Then I got her a Mido Belluna.
She was ok with it too.
When it comes to our 10th year anniversary.
I asked her what she wants.
She said I want a Rolex.
People who know about watches know Rolex.
People who have no clue about watches also know Rolex.
Wether the public perception see Rolex as something to show off or whatnot doesn't matter.
The Rolex brand name is already well known as the de facto luxury watch brand.
It would of course suck if Rolex watches are lousy, but they are exceptionally well made reliable.
So there is merit there.

It's all about context...
OMG, I got your point on the exclusiveness of watch and it should be stealth to general public, but I almost fell off my chair when I read this interesting analogy of watch with underwear....
Now imagine MWF become MUF, and the 'what is wrapping your d*ck today' thread.... :Laughing_on_floor: :Laughing_on_floor:

You have no idea how that analogy can go further.
I mean, ask any lingerie salesperson, it is what makes you feel sexy at the end of the day. How many times you hear an enthusiast says ‘wear what turns you on’. Don’t even get me started on how much a decent lady can spend on undergarment nowadays, and how often does that those get to see sunlight? See where I’m going with this? The best watchmaker and lingerie designers are also men by the way.
However, as I am typing this, I just realize that my analogy has its limitation as I’m unsure how to carry on when it comes to complication. Unlike watches, complications and knickers does not go well together. Trust me, don't even think of trying .....
Hence I will just limit the analogy to 3 hand watches, after all, we gents wear our briefs to carry our third ‘leg’. Which hand that would represents it, I’ll leave it to you. Some prefer fast like the second hand, some prefer slower like the hour hand (no pun intended on the length). So as long as we come on time… to our appointments, I mean.
My friends, after typing this I may risk getting my account banned for the contents above, hijacking this thread or more importantly if I have offended any Rolex lovers, I humbly apologize from the BOTTOM of my heart . In my defense, I was not told that this is any way a family oriented forum... If you don’t see me anymore, I promise to reincarnate myself in another form, maybe wearing a Rolex this time...
But seriously, I'm only just one of those people who doesn't 'get it', over time, maybe my opinions will change. :)

Gosh! I am sorry and would like to apologise to everyone here.
My earlier comments may have been misconstrued with the absence of smiley emoticons and makes me look like a rolex "fanboy" who takes offense to every comment about the brand.
On the contrary, if you scroll back to the earlier pages of the thread, I am in no way defending the brand and abhors the notion that most ppl think the crown is the end all of a "worthy" watch collection.
Wear what you like cause at the end of the day, a watch is just pair of underwear. A cheap Y front does as good as a job as a pair of Calvin boxer briefs. Some ppl like to wear it as it is while others choose to enhance their strength by having it around their face.

I guess owning a Rolex is like owning a BMW or Benz, is common but not everyone has it and yet one must at least owned a BMW or Benz before venturing into Jaguar, Porsche, Ferrari and the list goes on...
As for Grand Seiko, is like Lexus, well built and rival the Germans however people still perceived as a Toyota.

Also wondering what happened to original TS....

It is definitely not scratch proof and I would say it is more scratch resistant than the old aluminium inserts. The ceramic inserts can even be scratched by the green scotch cloth. Try it if you wish to verify..

Found an interesting quote on another forum expressing the status of Rolex in WIS's heart.....it says something like this....
"If the Calatrava Cross of Patek Phillippe is the emblem of the royal, then the Crown of Rolex is the symbol of King to the commoners"
Happy Tuesday everybody ;D

ya i never understood the ceramic bezels done by rolex and omega.
afaik, the scratches that occur on them actually are on the coating of the ceramic.
i've seen itchy hands accidentally rub off the numbers on the bezel using a scotch pad before.
contrast that to other brands whos ceramic bezels are pretty much unfinished, like oris, and you can see which one will be more scratch resistant.

Decent movements.
Charity.

Lack of knowledge about other brands.
Lack of imagination and creativity.
Brand more important than product.

Status symbol and value retention for most people. For watch connoisseur, Rolex is likely not in the list.

Rolex is ALWAYS in watch connoisseurs' list, especially the vintage..
Try google Paul Newman Daytona in Christie's auction this year... :o :o

Why Rolex? Because Pajak Gadai only recognise Rolek
:Laughing_on_floor:

I think Rolex did a great thing in providing ppl with brand watch image. The first thing ppl think bout luxury watch, they will have Rolex in their mind. The finishing is good especially those vintage series. I begin to fall in luv with the vintage series oledi

No doubt the advertising is good but finishing is just OK for a mass produced watch.

Rolex watch is built tough, and relatively easy to maintain. but Rolex lose out on complications. Its first "annual calendar" only launched recently named Sky dweller, which come with huge and thick movement. Why not Rolex ? in my next purchase.
-
I like Rolex a lot!
-
I guess for many having a Rolex epitomizes the benchmark for being successful in life.
-
Well this is after all a very subjective hobby....but for me, it has got to do with a little bit of tradition i.e. my late grandfather has one, my uncle has one, my father has one, my big brother has one and me.

What I m notice that rolex got high re sale value compare to other expensive watch...
That's one of the worst reasons to buy one. Buyer's tastes changes. What is popular today may not be tomorrow. Ask Daytona and the 50th anniversary Sub Date buyers in the last few years. That hype is all but gone, except in Asia.
-
Design wise is simple and followed by othes and of course, it got resale value...

Rolex is without doubt the most recognized watch in the world, what is not so well known is that the modern Rolex is the basis of almost all modern wrist watches. The waterproof case, the self winding movement, the date window in the dial, the GMT two time zone watch and the diving watch are all Rolex inventions.
Look at their vintage sports pieces, you will be amazed by their values that keep soaring, which many brands can hardly come close. It has reached the pinnacle of the class in its league
-
Personally I feel that a watch collection is not complete if you don't have a Rolex in it.
There is no one single reason but a multitude of reasons like; technological advancements, emotions, branding, consistency (in quality),
all roll into one gigantic reason, which is the name ROLEX.
-
Timeless classic.
-
Just swinging by again.
I can see the Rolex love is going strong...
-
Admittedly, reliable movements and solid case construction are the main points Rolex has over other manufacturers. Finishing is not for sure.

Case and bracelet only bcom solid few yrs ago!
So movement reliability and gd after sales service still the key factors

Actually referring to how the oyster case can take on the daily beater use. Agree that bracelet and clasp refinements only in the last few years and this has driven the price (not necessarily the cost) up considerably.

Isnt the dayotna is the first model to have the improved rolex claps and bracelet? Took awhile for them to implement it on the rest of the range ???

talking abt daytona, its clasp got updated from V-serial onward. it dates back from 2009
The Zenith or 4030 movement came with tuna-can type clasp. When it was released with the 4130 movement, the clasp was upgraded to the more solid type. Then somewhere as you say in V serials, it was upgraded again to the current type with different blades on the clasp. Externally, the difference can only be seen by the coronet on the double lock, where on the newer model, the coronet bottom sticks out slightly from the edge. Note that the solid gold models with leather strap still have the older type clasp and blades.
Pictures would help but I don't have any handy now.

Daytona, Explorer 2. Will maybe add a Datejust with a jubilee bracelet, a Yachtmaster (not the YM2) and a WG President in future.

The design is just simply beautiful, had a chance to "test-drive" my cousin's GMT master II and found out it looks quite good on my hand ;D

Just found this thread.
What I like Rolex most, basically are practicality and durability.
Eg. The cyclop, 904L steel, white gold hands, ... etc
-
Durability. Can take a lot of abuse and still work and look great(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171203/347a016a2a69ea66ad6224689e9f228a.jpg)

I've had a love-hate relationship with Rolex. It was a few months ago a love relationship, now it's back to hate. The watches are chunky as hell. And the only one that I like, the Daytona is not affordable.
So what do I do? Go for a Tudor :) . A better Rolex today imo. Gilt dial and all. The braver side of Rolex that Rolex just doesn't want to be.
-
Mostly because of its ability to hold value when compared with other watch.
-
because rolex handsome  :Laughing_on_floor:

Because it's Rolex :Laughing_on_floor: That's All!

Fancy, durable, history and fancy.. Did I say fancy? Even if you didn't know anything about watch, you would definitely know or heard about Rolex because of your elders etc. Though I find some extremely overpriced, some of them really have value in their watch

Becos if u go to pawn shop they will not say no. Easily change money

oldskol classic. planned for a sub date ss, called a few local AD, they cannot accept name in waiting list anymore, sad.

Second hand value secured

Value worth to keep !!

The branding is so strong that people would want to buy one!

best workmanship and the design is superb !

Been collecting watches for years and now learnt that Rolex is by far the easiest watches to flip (you have to get the right sports models, of course) and translate into cash as and when you like it. In fact, whereas I may need to think it over with some other brands prior to purchase, I have now been on a monthly buying spree when it comes to Rolex watches. I tend to fly lots for business; and just the other day, I was wearing my Batman and casually asked the airport AD if they had one. Well, they had so I took it. Along the way during the week, when another AD had yet another Batman, I forked out the cash too. And they all go into my safe until I need some cash for another piece; and I dare say that they work better than FDs.

Reviving a post dated a while back while going through some old ones.
To a certain extent - yes bcoz of the broader brand recognition across the general community. But once you have stepped up your knowledge in horology, you will then realize that brands like PP, VC, AP, Lange etc will be a better testimony of measuring success.

defining your success in your own terms, like they said, every rolex tells a story. i can agree with you, comparing to all these brands, it is considered mid range luxury, nevertheless enjoyable to wear and own.

Because it’s expensive and I like it

I will only go for the sport models, good value of money, simple and nice design that you won’t get bored looking at everyday. But lately the prices have been quite unaffordable.

Rolex sport watches holds value and ideal investment.

bcos of their 904L steel, build quality, durability, adaptability to multiple occasions, flip-ability for cash, n the list goes on...superb all rounder...personally dont think any other watch brand comes even close...Rolex is KING OF THE HILL!!!...
:)

u r so lucky to get Batman just by walking in to any AD randomly....i have tried the same across many airports as part of my biz travel too...never had such luck...:(
Been collecting watches for years and now learnt that Rolex is by far the easiest watches to flip (you have to get the right sports models, of course) and translate into cash as and when you like it.

Build quality, timeless design, maintains and/or increases value.
Having said this, there are many watches out there which are just as great (like the JLC Reverso).
-
I like Rolex because it is cheaper than PP :Laughing_on_floor:

Why Rolex ? Share your thoughts !
There are many reasons as to why i went for a Rolex than any other brands and among them are as follow:
1. Feel cool factor
2. The brand
3. Ego - Knowing that i have something that most people find it hard to get their hands on lol
