Hi all,
I am/was considering getting a Rolex submariner (black).
I don't plan to buy it in the immediate future but I will eventually get one. :)
Between the 2 latest submariners (16610 and 116610), what's your take?
1. Do you own 16610, 116610 or both?
2. Which one do you prefer? (welcome comments from everyone including owners, prospective buyer and Rolex haters)
3. Do you think the RM10k price different (new 116610 vs pre-owned 16610) is reasonable?
4. A specific question on the lume. Based on your understanding, how does the lume of 16610 vs 116610? Is the new one any better? And any idea how many hours will the lume last?
Thanks in advance for all the comments
:D

I prefer Sub C for the case, bracelet and the ceramic bezel
-
Better buy now if you want it new because the price ain't going down.
-
To be honest, I initially disliked the new maxi case and dial because it was very squarish like those shoulder pads of the late 1980's...
However, it looks better when you wear it and if you have a sizable wrist, it looks ok.
I like the blue lume (like the Pelagos) and the new clasp. The ceramic bezel also very shiny and blinky... me likey too...
Having said that, I also love the older sub, and TBH, it is a bit difficult to choose between the 2... haha
-
116610 does offers many advancetages over the old brother, such as the what CKL1213 has mentioned. Also not to forget the new Parachrom Bleu hairspring in the 116610 as well.
But for me, 10k difference, I'll top it up with another 1k-2k to get the used Explorer II 16570 "Polar".
Then you have 2 Rolexes, 1 black dial and 1 white dial + GMT for all occasions.
-
The current gen are better quality, aesthetically, but they are too blingy for my tastes - more jewellery than dive instrument, IMO. And I don't like the blocky 'maxi' case. The clasp is super-sweet, though.
So I would go for a 16610 and pocket the change. Except I wouldn't, because for about the same price you can get a 16600. That's what I would (and did) do.

I am known to my friends as being a modernist.
I would take the newer version of a watch most of the time.
Some will prefer the older iteration... it's a personal thing.
As for the 16610 vs 116610, I own the closest to these 2 models.
The 14060 and 114060
(http://i573.photobucket.com/albums/ss179/hanz079/Wristshots/DSC02285_zps078a1caa.jpg) (http://s573.photobucket.com/user/hanz079/media/Wristshots/DSC02285_zps078a1caa.jpg.html)
This is the 14060... sharper lugs.
Streamlined case.
Anodized aluminium bezel (cheap to replace)
Hollow bracelet midlinks.
Stamped sheetmetal clasp.
Some see this as a disadvantage as it feels flimsy.
The advantage is it will work problem free.
(http://i573.photobucket.com/albums/ss179/hanz079/Wristshots/DSC04394_zps4ca2cc90.jpg) (http://s573.photobucket.com/user/hanz079/media/Wristshots/DSC04394_zps4ca2cc90.jpg.html)
This is the 114060.
Chunkier case.
Maxi dial and hands.
Updated caliber with parachrom blue hairspring.
Cerechrom bezel (expensive to replace)
Solid links all round for the bracelet.
Updated clasp with quite complex construction.
Gridelock extension is really good and practical.
If you asked me if the new is worth the extra dough?
I would say yes.
The old one? Value for money.
A good buy for and entry level sports Rolex.

A used sea dweller is more VFM esp for those who do not like the bubble but yet you still get the date
-
Is really down to personal preference when it comes to this. You can have endless debate over the 2 . It has always been mentioned in this forum that, "which watch sings to you?" , the older casing, 16610 always does to me . If you would compare spec to spec, then i have to say the new one does seem to look better in that term . However for me , is all about the "feel" .. lol , and its these people who keeps the vintage watches alive :P . Then again , maybe i am biased i love all the submariners(especially those with tritium) from 5513 up to the last batch of 16610 .And I will never stop collecting them if my bank permits!
-
I think you can get a 2007/8 fairly good condition one for ard RM15-16k. New sub you can get around RM24-26k. Most ADs don't give any discounts for the new sub but overseas you may be able to get some discounts because they have more stock than here... but the RM not very "cantik" lately so it may be the same buying here...
-
I've not got any real interest to get a Submariner but if I did, I would prefer the 116610 over the 16610 anytime for the updated bracelet and clasp. Only reason otherwise is to save some money.
BTW, I prefer the green over the black.
-
i would say go for 116610 for its maxi dial, blue lume, ceramic bezel and glidelock.. but take note that the glidelock is scratches magnet…
Now days preown 16610 also not cheap and the different between the two is +- RM 5,000 (in this case if both is preown).
The only 16610 I want is 16610LV because I love the maxi dial and green bezel…
-
For me I'll go with 116610 , bigger case wears better on my wrist , but that's just me ... , and .... To further add to the dilemma (which I had Previously )Between the new sub & the GMTIIc , I ll go with the GMT, simply for the timezone feature ;D

steadily falling in love with sub for few weeks now.. been doing some research s n when free... but after reading this thread realized still a lot i dono bout sub..

so few things i wish to clarify whats maxi dial since i cant c the diffs between the two dials..
is 116610 a replacement for 16610 in a way the latter is no longer available in stores?..

Maxi dial is where the hour markers are larger.
The 116610 is the replacement for the 16610 which is no longer made but can still be found new in some places.

There are a few on sale on net.

Although mine is not a sub date and just a sub 2 liner, the fundamentals are still similar.
I am a traditionalist and still prefers the old case to the new one. The new case and attributes are just too bling for my taste. That is just me. It's just an unexplainable feeling or lack of it when I strap the new model on my wrist.
But honestly the new case, bracelet, dial, bezel and lume is hard to beat. Get the newer model cause the prices are not that far off.
Strap both on your wrist and the answer would come to you.
Meanwhile for an old man like me, the tin can bracelet and smaller case still holds dear and suits an old man like me.

Go for the new model especially with improve ceramic bezel and glidelock, if the price difference is only RM5k. the improved technology and newer mechanical movement (means less need for service) worth every penny.
-
I might be wrong, but I thought that only applies to the co-axial movements.
The 3135 still have the same service interval recommendation as the older 3130 calibre. The parachrome bleu spring is just antimagnetic.

i mean "newer" i.e production date is later than previous one. i.e a 3 year old 116610 may not need to service in next 3-5 years but older 10 year old 16610 may need for service immediately if no records of servicing.

To me, the modern ceramic subs represent improved quality and have that loud `look at me, I am a Rolex' factor.
On the other hand, the 5 digits sub or sd or GMT or explorers, reminds me of what Rolex was marketed as back then - tool watches for the hardworking man who wants reliability..
It all depends on what you want...you wont go wrong....My choice is obvious...
(http://i869.photobucket.com/albums/ab256/nandopexus/Sub/f8991968-8de0-4be3-8f02-09b4e316cfb2_zpsf7862f4e.jpg) (http://s869.photobucket.com/user/nandopexus/media/Sub/f8991968-8de0-4be3-8f02-09b4e316cfb2_zpsf7862f4e.jpg.html)
However, I do love the loudness and bling factor of the green LV sub very much...
-
I prefer the older Sub.. I haven't quite warmed up to the maxi case and I do find the dial on the new one a bit too wordy. That said, while I have seriously considered getting the older Sub, the one issue that kept me from getting it is the tinny bracelet.

Your choice is obvious because you are the patina man mah... hehehe
That is some killer patina on your sub... or should we say oxidised? ::)

For one thing, that "tin" bracelet is reliable. But the rattling noise when you have your hands on the car steering while idling at the traffic lights may get on your nerves one day. The new bracelet has not been around long enough to prove it's worth but so far, the feel is solid although there were some issues with the welded joints for the GMT2c model.
This is from experience with an older Zenith Daytona, 40mm Exp2 and the newer 4130 movement Daytona.

thanks, i c the diff now..
brings me few more questions before i take the plunge...
is it true the new sub's bracelet comes with polished centre link... if it is, how polished is it.. i mean like the milgaus/dj2 or somewhere in between..
assuming i go for the old sub, can i retrofit new sub's bracelet to the old sub.. i mean will it fit really ngam ngam ho... n if i do this, how much im looking at to order new sub's bracelet... n the waitinng list...?

For the Submariner, the models that come with the polished centre links is only the Half gold, Full gold and White gold version.
The stainless steel is all brushed.
No you can't retrofit the old sub with the new sub's bracelet.
The holes on the lugs are positioned differently so you can't do it.
If you are buying just the bracelet and clasp... i would say no less than rm5500.
There is no way you can just walk in and buy a bracelet or order.
Rolex parts are 1 to 1 exchange.
You show them a broken submariner oyster bracelet and you are allowed to buy a new one of the same model.
They will keep your old one.

i knew i had come to the right place for informations.. guys like yall, hanzo, dpkong n all... salute..
there goes my dream of the perfect sub... guess im leaning ( not by choice ) towards the new sub since i value the nice bracelet more over nice slimmer case..
my only two other obstacle is
i worry if i go for new sub, il salivate everytime i c explorer 39mm.. their slim case n nice all brushed non hollowed bracelet.. mind u my wrists rather small at 6.5..
sub or sub date.. i mean sub looks very very balanced n sweet while sub date gives date awareness practicality... how do i tackle this issue...
apologies if i seem to have hijacked this thread.. pls c it s im more of piggybacking okay...

Then go for the Exp1 at 39mm... it's a nice piece too.
Some might lament that Subs are everywhere... So an Explorer 1 can be a more "low key" piece...
Sub or Sub Date, this is personal preference.
I like my watches to be balanced... ergonomically and proportionately... Without the date and the cyclops... it's just like the Yin-Yang logo... Balance...
Well... for me anyway... ;D
-
was skeptical like as I made it a must for my watches to hv day/date (at least date) , until I got 1 recently with no date , I find it not an issue at all , cause I refer to my phone now for date + if u don hv a winder n multiple watches to swap ard , adjusting ur watch without a date feature is a breeze
-
this can be settled by going to AD, have them line up sub, sub date n explorer 39mm... try them on, compare n bla bla bla......
but then i havent been able to find an AD that can do that... stock problems... even overseas...
online pics doesnt do justice...
an AP RO 15400 will settle all this... except i cant quite part with that kind of figure.. not able to n not forgetting wife's wrath...

Salivate everytime you see the Explorer 39mm?? Pavlov experiment....  Both are nice, but trust me once you have the sub you will forget about the Explorer.
Sub / Sub date?? Go for the Sub date!! It's more practical.
Mine says Hi!!!

The Explorer 39mm is always a nice piece but as Enkidu says, once you have a Sub or Sub Date, you will forget the 39mm.
Bracelet on Explorer and Sub/Sub Date are the same brushed finish and not hollow if it comes with the new clasp.
Date feature is something you won't miss after some time as it changes only once a day anyway. And the ceramic bezels on the new Subs is really shiny... ::)
So what are you waiting for???

besides eplorer 39mm, sub n sub date, theres another watch im considering.. theyr all about the same price... 22k plus minus 3k.. wud this settle the score??...

Unless it comes with the latest in house UNICO movement, I personally would steer clear... but hey... it's your money...

Many Hublot comes with ETA movements. not worth the high price charged.
Go for Sub date. more practical with the date function. I have a manual winding watch without the date which i find a bit inconvenient.

Haha.. that's funny! Between Rolex and Hublot, it's better to keep to Rolex with its overall quality, in-house movement and its undisputed wide recognition and acceptance.

You started the thread old and new sub.
Then date no date, then Exp then throw in another brand.
This will never end.

This will not end well....

wow the response !!!.... amazing n interesting.. hah...
but i get it, u guys r on a different level of watch appreciation... me only poisoned s recently s this year.. all these years i wasnt into watches..been wearing casios ( not even Gs ), fossils, titus n such at min 6 years interval...
when my last casio kaput early this year only then i started to appreciate watches..then fine watches... went crazy buying a watch a month since,( started with casios oso.. then tissots.. then,...) flipped few, now i only have two fine watches ..no 3 still a tissot...
i still cant differentiate between movements quality..or how does movements differs, physically... or how much should they cost... perhaps thats why my shortlist is quite long n extensive.. have faith dont judge n this shall end well...
so takeshi, my 'want' list is actually quite long, APRO skeleton at the top... oris artix gt at the bottom... but at at the budget im looking at, these 4 watches ( sub, sub date, hublot c fusion, explorer 39 ) suits n me like lah.. so which one wud u reccomend n y... which one to avoid n y..
anyhow i dont c myself owning so many fine watches.. 3 or 4 at most.. ok lah make it five.. i mean if so many then when to wear.. but thats just me..
guess im not a 'movementnist' im just a 'lookist'..
ps roystock who started this thread, i hope ur okay with me 'piggybacking' this thread.. peace..

Start a new thread if still undecided. But of the 4 choices you have put above, go for the Submariner Date ceramic as your watch fancy has just started and that's the one you will lose the least if you want to flip in the future. And get it pre-owned for even less losses.
HTH..

Sub Ceramic +1.
I own a Sub 14060M, I like it so much till I stop thinking of buying other diver's watch (thus save you lots of money)
Though not in your list, but you can consider GMTc II as well...

No problem guys. I have sort of decided that it will be the new sub.
I have soft spot for blue lume (and bright lume in general).
Thanks for those who responded and you guys can continue with the other discussions

Are you so sure you'll stop at 3 or 4 watches ? i had 3 when i 1st joined this forum ( seiko , casio & louis errard) , within 2 years my collection grew to 2 boxes (x10) of watches  , i'm out of control

For those who enjoy watches and keep some Rolexes, the Sub (in at least one of the variants) is usually one of them. It could be ND, Sub C Date, LV, LN, LB, etc.. Can't go wrong with this choice! Lose less compared to other brands and makes when you decide to flip it later.

Never owned a Sub before. Like the green ceramic but somehow always something more interesting gets in the way. Can say it's a bit plain... ?

Agree, the Sub C LN could look a bit plain, with or without a simple date complication, but nevertheless, it's arguably the most iconic Rolex. In some overseas forums, the members virtually worship this creation, judging from their postings and pics. So for the OP, the old or new Sub is a good choice, tho a good number of members lean to The One with ceramic bezel..

No need to follow the herd..
I find nothing particularly iconic or attractive about the black Sub/Sub Date other than the nice glidelock clasp, good maxi lume and shiny ceramic bezel of the new models. The green Sub Date is a different beast altogether. That and the new Basel 2013 blue dial two-tone.
-
Love the old sub, but the new sub bracelet is really nice especially the new clasp.
And it's so true that the Sub C is so blink that I can easily notice on the wrist.
Blue lume is nice and trendy.
For black sub,i guess Sub C is a better bet, as pre-owned price is not much different, unless you are going for collectable models.
-
so have you bought the new sub? how much?
-
There is a lot of improvement on the 116610.
Just the bracelet and ceramic bezel and luminous compound alone already enough reason for u to choose the new
11610 is wasn't that old to hv the vintage n history value, it's not rare at all...
So I won't need a second to decide looking at the small price different
-
love both but 16610 more close to classic.

The new one the bracelet I pakai kena rashes KNN

The new one the bracelet I pakai kena rashes KNN
What happened?
I wear my 114060 (a slight deviation from earlier plan) on rotation, no issue whatsoever.
It is really a solid, nice and comfy watch
-
I dunno... I get very bad and itchy rashes when I wear the 11610. Thinking of applying a coat of clear nail varnish on the bracelet to avoid metal to skin contact.
-
I really like the bracelet... very comfy and fitting... but the rashes is unbearable

*116610

Kukujiao, considered their aftermarket rubber strap before? Maybe it will solve your rash problem. Plus it looks cool!

many people actually allergic to nickel
titanium case will be good to you
or any other nickel free stainless steel... damasko ice hardened steel shd be nickel free
-
Nickel free stainless steel. Interesting.
I should suggest to my colleague
He is allergic to steel and leather.
He can only wear titanium watch, where choices are quite limited

Well I went with the Sub ceramic cause I got it at a good price. Apart from that, it's a robust piece and good for daily wear. Ever since I got it I have been wearing it most the time. No need to worry about banging it, scratches etc. this thing is a beast and perfect all round piece.
The piece I have is over 4 years old and it still looks new. The ceramic bezel is nice. If it's a Daytona you'd spot scratches all over the place and it won't look at good.
I highly recommend purchasing a subC with or without date.

Had the Pre Ceramic Sub until i tried on the Sub C. Wow, what a beauty and really premium feel. As one f the youtubers put it, the Sub C "has the familar looks of the Submariner with a twist of modernity". Bought the Sub C and flipped the Old Model. Very happy indeed.

Prefer pre sub c
-
If you are buying a watch base on specs , then it will be the sub c . And if you ask me , which watch I like , it will be the pre sub c. This is like asking if you want a 2015 911 turbo or a 1997, 993 turbo.
It's about the feel and the connection .

Ya getting both would be the best but even if one can afford it, its difficult to justify owning 2 Submariners. Granted that there are always exceptions and people even own a fewSubmariners.

Yup, had to get special approval from Home Minister for getting the second Sub.
