Title: Seiko : Made in Japan vs Not Japan ?
Post by: djkenishii on August 10, 2013, 12:12:08 PM
hello guys,

i have seen Seikos which are made in japan and some not made in japan. the japan ones are priced 20-30% higher. the japan made ones can be seen on the watch face with a "made in japan" wording printed. any reason i should go for a japan one vs non japan? anyway both are having international seiko warranty. would like your advice in this fellow horologist...thanks!

Yes, there are a few examples of such Seikos. One of them is the SKX009 which comes in two variants - SKX009J1 and SKX009K1. The former is a JDM model, whilst the latter is sold outside of Japan. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe they are mechanically identical and the only difference is the very small "Made in Japan" on the dial.

Unless you're picky about the slight detail, I'd say go for whichever suits your wallet the best

1 big difference you will see with the JDM model is the day wheel will have Arabic day indication.

Ah? Didn't know that the non-JDM models did without the Arabic day. But even then, the Arabic only appears between 12AM-2AM, after which it switches back to English.

Check the manual.
Should be possible to display the Arabic day.

At least on my previous Damasko watch i can choose to show German or English day indication.

I have seen the J1 models with English and Arabic, and English and Chinese/ Kanji? You can set which one you want displayed when you adjust the day and date.

I think the K and J models is for different market country of origin rules only.
It does not effect the day wheel language combo.

My Seiko 5 sports has "made in Japan" on dial. The day is in  English and Arabic. Believe is J1 model.
