I’ve had GMT2 C and a Sub C, both 40mm, and a 44mm Panerai. Now, I would like to have my 3rd Rolex which I’m hunting for a 36mm. (Used)
Both are classic model. I’ve seen quite a number of DJ in the wild, but not the Explorer.
IMO, Explorer can be a dress and casual watch with both Steel & Leather Strap. But the DJ can only be worn with the leather straps (don’t prefer the original Jubilee), but I like the vintage look of a DJ.
The Explorer’s price is double of the DJ.
Which one would be your choice?

I will personally choose the Explorer I but not the 36mm as it looks a bit ridiculous on me. But if your wrist size and height allow it, go for it.

Based on the 2 choices, I will personally choose Explorer 1 since as mentioned, it can be used as dress or casual wear. Its best in both worlds but its your call at th end. Buy whichever sings more to u.
-
If you get the Explorer, then all your 3 Rolex will be black-dialled. A Datejust would give you more color options ... even a 2-tone DJ with a leather strap can look very casual yet classic. If that is important to you.
-
Will go for rolex explorer

Between both pieces above, the answer would really be quite easy. Eii tend to hold their prices quite well, not so much on your proposed Ei. What with all the comments about the short hands, etc and you could do better to save up further towards the Eii. The 1601 on the other hand, is a real vintage and worth adding into one's collection. Let me poison you with some previous pictures from my collection. To sway your opinion further, swing by http://andywristwatches.blogspot.my/2014/04/rolex-datejust-1.html (http://andywristwatches.blogspot.my/2014/04/rolex-datejust-1.html) for more pictures.

Mate of course go for Explorer 1, if budget is not an issue. is more sportier and more decent look. But as u having 2 Rolex sport watches. I think Datejust also a great choice under ur criteria. Is often a Rolex iconic watch.
-
Definitely explorer, it has a more sporty look
-
Bump for Rolex haha!

Explorer gets my vote, overall case and bracelet structure more solid, 369 dial looks minimal yet simple.
Otherwise, DJ would be vintage which fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet are the iconic designs.
-
explorer more sentimental value.
datejust more "uncle uncle" classic looks

Noticed u have few sports watches maybe DJ is a option dress watch for you. Give your wrist a lighter less heavy feel? (Only u know your own character )
Some said DJ is uncle watch for me is more like a gentleman watch and understated watch on hand. ( u can choose normal bezel Rolex )
Explorer for me is a causal watch can never be a replacement dress watch in Rolex.
I didn’t own any Rolex just a watch enthusiastic guy give my humble opinions.

Oh well, i just posted a similar response on a separate post here, but definitely the 114270 instead of DJ
-
Definitely Explorer I.
-
Your collection are mostly Sport Model, say the GMT master 2, Submariner and a Panerai, no point buying another sport model like the Explorer.
So my vote would be the Datejust, best for dressy or formal occasion and 36mm just couldn't do any better fit perfectly under any cuff.
-
At 36mm, I'd vote the Explorer 1, in particularly the 114270 - but agree that the prices are now very high for it.
The 114270 feels more like a direct descendent to the very original Rolex Explorer. I personally don't like that the new Explorer 1 in 39mm.
If it's a toss up at 39mm, definitely go with something else.
-
Explorer ftw!

If they finally release a polar Explorer I at Baselworld 2019, I will be the first to try to order one (photo from Monochrome)!

Explorer 214270 for me! If 36mm, I’d go for Explorer 1016 (if money is not an issue, Lol!)
