Title: Are small watches back in fashion???
Post by: bimmerman on February 21, 2018, 07:07:29 PM
Recently there's been a trend where new watches from Omega, Bell&Ross and others are starting to shrink a little with sizes below 40mm starting to reappear in their product range.

I have small 6.25 inch wrists and I find 40-42mm to be the sweet spot for me as anything smaller feels a little odd.

What do you think? Will the smaller sizes catch on? Or is this just a passing fad? Would you wear a 38mm modern watch?

Basel 2017 we saw BR hv the vintage series redesign to 38.5mm for V1

Shrink to 41mm for V2

SIHH already telling
38-40

Omega hv the trilogy back to old size
But that’s the reissue

SIHH also see trend on back to smaller size 38-41mm

Coming Basel 2018 might see it all

Even Panerai has started to reduce their watch diameters with the 38mm due and the submersible at 42mm.

So it seems that most of the manufactures are back to moderate sizing.

Just a rumour but I heard that the 2018 Submariner will debut at Basel World with thin lugs like the old 16610 but the case size will increase from 40mm to 42mm. So while the new Sub grows slightly in size, it will appear slimmer and more elegant.

There will also be an updated movement will more power reserve. True or not we will soon find out.

I believe so. Rolex is the only brand that is currently making watches of a bigger size, i.e. 43mm seadweller. IWC and even Panerai is making smaller watches.

I think its also a by-product of increased interest in vintage watches. Lots of brands are re-issuing previous designs, hence the smaller sizes.

Yes, personal preference.

I seems preferring smaller watch size. Most of my watches are  ranging from 30mm to 39mm.

They always slip nicely underneath my sleeves and less likely get scratched.

Yes, they are coming back. Tudor just release BB58 in baselworld 2018. It will take a couple of years but it's progressing.

It's a great thing! I hate how watches were getting bigger and bigger.  If Rolex shrinks the Skydweller down to slightly below 40mm, it would be perfect!

Retro is back, so it makes sense that they are going smaller in size.

i am always thought bigger size is nicer because its prominent until i got my seiko sarb035 38.5cm.
Rolex airking 34cm still very comfortable and under stated on the wrist.

Smaller size equates to cost saving by the manufacturer, but they still charge a premium out of it...

Not a bad business model I would say... just my thoughts though...

Omega Aqua Terra 38.5mm. 38-42mm would be just nice. Not too big nor small.

36-38mm is very comfortable size. I think swiss watch size reducing also cater for new rich China market?

I never supported the craze of the big watches to begin with.
Instead I believe that the form should match the function.
Dive watches were big because they to be as visible as possible, had to be worn over wetsuits and had to have cases that were as water resistant to pressure as possible.
Pilot watches were big because they had to be worn over pilot jumpsuits and be usable with gloves, and pilots needed clear visibility amidst all the dials in front of them.
Chronographs were sized bigger only to fit the size of the movement underneath.
Dress watches were small because they did not need to be big.

In the past few years, luxury watches have become statement pieces and desk divers / pilots, and that meant they had to get bigger and bigger to fit the growing egos and the increasing need to show-off. Understandable, but I don't have to agree with it.

I prefer the time where they were designed to suit the purpose, and were cased for a size purely from a design perspective or a utilitarian perspective - and so completely support the vintage trend that's causing sizes to be smaller.

TL;DR: I have a small wrist so all of the above doesn't matter! :P

not everyone can wear small watches, take into consideration, if u have a thick wrist, how that gonna be nice if ure gonna wear a watch with dial face 30?

u may like the watch, and u think it suit u, but when it comes to others view on it, it definitely not as good as u thought it should be.

I think 38-40mm is the middle ground.

I agree. Not everyone is a smurf.

Small mens watches by today's standards probably start at 36mm. I have 6.5" wrists and I'm comfortable with a 36mm Rolex due to its broad lugs. 34mm Rolex no can do. But as for Omega I would have to draw the line at 39mm as they tend to wear smaller than Rolex.

Slowly I believe. This year Panerai shot everyone weirdly with a 38mm, very not their MO. Tudor released BB 36 as well, I take it as a good sign.

Nonetheless, we still gotta respect other people’s choices of watch size, be it they’re wearing a correct size or not. Who are we to say anything if they really love the overhang of an oversized watch anyway.

Back in the 1960s men’s watches were very often below 36mm, especially in Far East where we are smaller boned. I have a whole clutch of them, the pics of which I will post over time when I get my photobucket account right first.

Not a fan of small watches, but thin is a yes, such as the longines series is really classy and dressy haha
