It freaked me out too for a while. But I thought that Seiko would have a good reason for it (like it was a homage to their original watch 100 years ago) and decided to take the risk.
Glad I did! Having seen and worn it in the flesh, I love this watch for its clean and simple dial. Plus its striking! Just wish that Seiko would give me an insight into their thought process ... but then again, guess not

The watch dial is absolutely beautiful....perfect in fact but the date window spoilt it completely...
another area of improvement is a longer second hand that reaches right to the edge of the dial and curved downwards like the GS second hands
A Seiko with an enamel dial for today ..... though must admit that I have wondered why the date apereture looks like it has been punched through? Sifus?
Seriously, that "punched out" hole actually stopped me to buy it
