Seiko Prospex SBDC001 aka Sumo (Lots of pics!)
« on: February 20, 2010, 11:59:04 AM »
Spotted this 2 weeks ago and was instantly poisoned. Took alot of will power to leave the shop without the watch. But the poison was overwhelming so I returned later the same day and pulled the trigger. This is the first watch that has such an effect on me. Usually, I will ponder over a watch for a few days before deciding. So, here are the pics!

The box.

Inner box and manual.

Something interesting. Technical specs for the lume in the manual. First time I've seen this. I don't understand the jargon but I appreciate Seiko's effort to have it in there.

Surprisingly small box to hold such a big watch. This is the black dial version.

Best part about the watch is the dial. It just grabs your attention. Every time I take a glance at the time, I will stared at it a few seconds more just to admire the dial.

Signed crown at 4 o'clock.

Beautifully engraved caseback.

Diver's extension deployed. Took some time figure it out. Quite a clever design I must say.

Some wrist shots.

At 46mm, it wears much smaller. I have a pretty small wrist but is does not look ridiculously big on it.

I love this shot. This is the best angle of the watch.

Once again, beautiful dial.

Curved lugs sits well on the wrist.

Signed clasp.

My 2 Seiko divers side by side.

Saved the best for last... LUME!

Sumo vs. BM. Both uses Lumibrite. I think the lume on Sumo has the edge. On the Sumo, the lume is applied on polished markers and hands which reflects the lume which gives the impression of a brighter lume.

This is the heaviest watch I have ever owned. First time I wore it to the office, my hands actually felt tired when typing on my laptop. I removed the watch and left it on my desk when doing work. So this will be very much a weekend watch.

The movement is the popular 6R15 found in many JDM models. It fulfills all my requirements; it an automatic, hacks, hand winds and has 50 hours power reserve. I have no complaints.

This is my first Seiko JDM model and it will definitely not be my last. Hopefully, more will arrive on our shores seeing how popular they are among the local watch collectors.

Hope you enjoyed the review. Have a good weekend!

Finally see your report on the watch congrats man !
I have still yet to checkout the store.

Didnt realise it was 46mm but the lug design looks like it sits well on the wrist.

Good hunt -- Hush.

A very handsome watch. I always wanted one, but torn between the 4R15 and the 6R15. The 4R15 had arrived and my dealer has me to view but I am not ready to do so.

Say, can pm to share the price and place on this acquisition.

Thanks
dc
I am almost a recovered watchaholic, but last checked shows only 70% recovered. How?

Watch diameter is 45mm-46mm. I have seen both these sizes quoted over the web.

Can't really compare with the monster. The only thing they have in common is that they are both divers. Sumo and monster are in different price range. What you pay is what you get. With the Sumo price being 4x the price of the monster, you will get better quality product.

But both are very good value for money imho. And both have a very unique design. The Sumo and monster are keepers for me.

Thank you very much. This is my first ever review.

In the last lume shot, both watches are shot side by side. It is not merged. The Sumo was ticking (the blurred second hand) but the monster was dead.

Hi ex001. I recall you have a sumo too!

The Sumo has another nickname which may not be suitable to mention in public due to it's unique triangle at 12 o'clock. Use google and you will eventually find out.  ;)

Ya that nickname came out when seiko first introduced the watch to market.  :Laughing_on_floor:
Now it is officially known as Sumo. Heres mine.

This JDM is officially imported by Thong Sia. The warranty card is stamped by the AD. So I believe Thong Sia will take care of the warranty and servicing.
