Evolution of my "Collection"
« on: April 24, 2012, 09:09:55 AM »
The journey started in the year 2004, where i got my 1st swiss... it's a Tissot T-Race Athens Olympics.
Then a year later.

My 1st Swiss automatic watch.
Maurice Lacroix Pontos Rectangulaire Chronograph Titanium.

Then, when it's time for me to look for another watch 2 years later.
I stumbled upon the lyn watch thread... and with the help of the forum members, I got this.
Zenith El Primero HW

It was at lyn that ck77 introduced me to mwf... I joined...
Then the next thing I know... I am the "accumulating" stage... now I get it...

So my next few purchases in quick succession.

Victorinox Swiss Army Ambassador Automatic.

Seiko Premier SPBJ001.

Glycine Combat Manual.

Laco Miyota Pilot.

Got this Omega Aqua Terra for my dad.

Damasko DC67

Sinn U1 SDR

Omega Seamaster Bond.

So, until this time... my so called collection is still without a specific direction.
It is as though I am walloping whatever my heart fancied at any particular moment.
I serious awakening is needed.
ck77 came down to kk and we have a drink and chat.
We talked about Rolex and I said I am interested in one.
A Polar ExpII if possible.
ck77 brought the word back to KL and soon, I was offered one.
And sure enough, I bought it.

Then I showed it to my dad, he take a look at it and from his face, I could tell that he liked it.
White dial, black hands... excellent legibility of time and date.
So, long story short, I gave it to him.

Sold the Maurice Lacroix, Victorinox, Seiko Premier, Glycine, Damasko and Sinn.
And then I hunt down a Black Dial Explorer II for myself.
This is the stage where someone mention "a stalinist purge"
Sell almost all for a Rolex.

So now I have both Polar and Noire.

Since my dad is wearing the Polar, I took back the Aqua Terra, sold it.

After that, I laid low... try to keep myself busy... For awhile... I was like cured... no desire to look at anymore watches. But who am I kidding right?
Until this came along. Which was funded partly by the sale of the Aqua Terra.
Zenith Chronomaster Open XXT

So, off goes the Zenith El Primero HW.

And then in came this one.
THE Rolex Submariner 14060.

Then this is what I call an "itchy butt" purchase.
Seiko Fifty Five Fathoms Mod.

The Seiko was given to my friend as a birthday present just a few month later.

Then off goes Seamaster Bond.
To usher in this one.
Zenith El Primero Rainbow Flyback.

And then soon enough, a forum member decided to sell this one... which I snapped up in an instant.
Tudor Submariner 94110.

And then I sold the Zenith Chronomaster XXT 45.5mm just so that I can satisfy my curiosity and bought the same watch but in a smaller 40mm size.

Then, just recently pulled the trigger on a long time target.
The Rolex GMT Master II Ceramic.

So, until today, watches that are "mine" consists of

1. Rolex Explorer II Noire 16570
2. Rolex Submariner 14060
3. Rolex GMT Master II Ceramic 116710LN
4. Tudor Submariner Snowflake 94110
5. Zenith El Primero Rainbow Flyback
6. Zenith Chronomaster Open T

Looks more like a "collection" now I suppose.

Thanks for reading.

As of now, I am not sure what is the next addition or subtraction, but whatever it is... no more gung ho!! lol

Thanks bro... ck did pass me the message..
However, a certain grey dealer is having a sale... and a brand new one could be had for usd4900.
Pretty good deal... unfortunately wallet is abit thin at the moment.  ;D

very interesting read. Soon, you will move on to Daytona and then AP. It is just the natural progression of things. :Laughing_on_floor:
Have yet to come to terms with a missing date feature on the Daytona.
As for an AP, I guess I have yet to bring myself to spend 30k on a single timepiece at this point in my life.
Daytona and AP fall into that camp...
You can say it's a mental block...

As to get the collection complete, I am guessing on the Rolex side, a Sub Date is imminent.
On the Zenith side, the iconic tri-color dial is a must.
After that, I guess it can be considered "complete" to a certain level.

Unless I want to go with variations of the same watch ie:
5513, 14060 2 line (which I have) 14060M 4 line, 114060 Ceramic.
1675 GMT, 16710 GMTII, 116710LN (which I have)
1655 Exp, ExpII 16570 (which I have), ExpII 216570.

If that's the way I go, then it will be tough on the wallet... really tough.

Here's something to spice it up

The price of these 1016 is moving but still not that bad yet. When the mainland chinese start buying then it's all over.

Bro Tyler,

The history rich Exp1 model does not really sing to me.
That is why I have yet to own one.
The newer 39mm ones doesn't really float my boat as well due to the short minute hands.

I have been thinking alot for the past few days and I guess a Zenith 1969 Reissue and Sub date... I might just call it a day. And the Noire ExpII should be the one to go as my dad is already wearing a polar... and the polar's gotta be the heirloom piece.
I think I can survive with what I have for the next 10 years. ;D

That's too bad. Well different stroke for different folks.
If an Explorer doesn't fancy you maybe a Scientist?

BTW the Milgauss GV is selling at retail now which is good news.

If you want to stick to a vertical collection theme (same model different variation) then I would suggest a 5512 instead of 5513

The 5512 to me is more exciting instead of a 5513. It's the 1st major step Rolex took to have COSC on their Submariner model.

The Milgauss is indeed a very beautiful watch... love the lighting bolt hands...
Tried it once at my local AD and felt abit thick on my wrist.
I will not say it won't be part of my collection, but if I do get it, it will be the black dial one.
The GV is a little too gimicky for me.

As for the 5512, those in good condition don't come often, and when they do... they cost quite alot.
A 5513 would be a more feasible hunt.

And let's not forget the vintage minefield out there.
Once kena, the damage is quite tough to stomach.

I agree the Milgauss GV is quite an odd beast. You'r right about its size. Even though it's only 40mm but it wear big because of a larger dial. The Sub/GMT have smaller dial to accompany their bezel. I find it quite an elegant solution. Increase the size of presence without increasing the diameter of the watch. I think the black dial is beautiful and probably much rarer due to the popular demand of the GV. I have the white dial myself.

If you really want to search for vintage rolex I can share with you a few reliable source. PM me. Just to let you know a good condition 5513 cost almost the same as a 5512. (if talking about the same era)

Unfortunately at this time, my wallet is wafer thin... lol
But when I am in the market for one, I will know who to look for.

Complications are nice but more complications means more $$$...
Here is to wishing I have a good retirement 22 years from now with enough money left for me to travel the world and buy high complication watches...

Or it might turn out that I am chin high in debt and scraping to make end meet? lol

You already have wife and kids.... That is far more complicated than a chronomaster

Money would fix all problems with the watch and money may not fix problems with the former
