Casio DW-8800 Battery change
« on: August 23, 2013, 07:48:39 AM »
This is not a step by step tutorial of how to change a battery in a Casio G-Shock but more to show that it can be done at home if you have the proper tools and patience.

My Casio G-Shock DW-8800 ADMA. Dead to the world.

The first thing to do is to remove the very complex strap.... unbuckle this.

See how complex the strap is....

More strap to unravel...

Once all is unravel, you will have access to the case back.

But all is not done. You need to remove the strap. Makes it easier. Gain access to the spring bars.

Remove the spring bars.

Remove the strap from the case back. This is how the spring bar is mounted to the strap.

You need to remove the two plastic pieces that covers the screws for the case back. Locate the screws (4 off) at the side of the case. Remove the screws.

Once you remove the screws and plastic cover, you have access to the case back.

The case back is held by 4 screws.

Remove the 4 screws and the case back.

The module with the case back removed. Do not turn the module over as you do not want to lose the 3 springs on the module.

Note the 3 springs. Also you can see the latch/ lock that holds the battery in place. You can also see the 'AC' at the top right hand cornr of the module. We will need to short out the module to reset once the new battery is fitted. Unlatch the lock.

The latch unlocked.

The battery removed. Please use a plastic tweezer to remove the battery. You do not want to short out the module.

Closer view of the 'AC' and it's contact point. Note the two gold colour springs. Do not lose these.

Clean the module and contacts if dirty. Note the other (third) spring beside the latch. These springs provide contact between the module and the piezo-electric speakers on the case back.

Don't forget to lubricate the gaskets.

The new battery.

Install the new battery. Again use plastic tweezers. After you install the new battery, just short out the module (about 2 seconds) by connecting the 'AC' contact to the back of the battery.

Check to make sure everything is working and the reverse process begins. Reinstall the case back.

Tighten up the screws.

Reinstall the plastic protector.

And strap.

And it's all done. Again, only do this if you are confident and know what you are doing and have all the right tools.

Maybe there is no need to remove the strap since removing the 2 plastic pieces should be enough to get access to the caseback screws?

Yes, can be done that way as well, but the strap does get in the way. Also does not help with photography as your view is limited.
