Sea Gull 1963 chrono : Are there fake and real models?
« on: December 22, 2020, 07:09:30 AM »

Have had a growing interest in the Sea Gull 1963 chronograph recently and started looking around the internet for people selling it and then saw a seller stating that there are fake models out there? How does that work out? Can someone who is a master of this model share more information about this?

Some of the pictures from the internet below...

Hmm I was about to suggest that you checkout their official page and get it from there in order to avoid possible risk of counterfeit. Butnit seems this particular model is currently out of stock.

Jody from Just One More Watch gave a pretty good breakdown of the whole situation with the Seagull 1963.
A bit complicated but it's an enjoyable video.

So is it true the one with open caseback is an imitation?

Well, I have bought mine last year. While looking into the matter I learned that there are mainly 3 legit version:

1. The seagull 1963 produced by seagull itself(no visible case back)
2. The Redstar seagull which Thomas produces([email protected] mail him for prices)
3. The HKED version (this has a different logo other than that everything same)(website:https://www.hkedwatches.com/)

All have the same movement.

Now its upto you to decide which one you need.
The first one is from a reputed company and a little pricy .
the 2nd and 3rd are reasonably priced .

Thank you for the info. Did not know this. Are there other sources to buy? USD$300 makes the watch more interesting.

What's the chance of getting a cheaper one pre-owned and where to search for one?

The watches at https://www.hkedwatches.com have a different movement compared to the $175 one seen at

https://www.watchuseek.com/threads/wts-seagull-1963-38mm-with-sapphire-crystal.5270206/

and

https://www.reddit.com/r/Watchexchange/comments/kyqwfi/wts_seagull_chronograph_219312_st19/

but the 2 latter watches seems to have the same movement

$300 vs $175

I do like the HKED models but would have preferred the logo to remain a star instead.

What is this HKED though, reseller or modder of some kind?

If your going for 300$ then seagull 1963 would be best option.
the 1963  from thomas costed  around 260$ including shipping for the 38 mm acrylic(this was on MARCH 2020).
HKED also costs around that too.

i think HKED is a watchmaker and also one of the moderators of the watchuseek forum. But not very sure about it as I got these while researching about 1963 last year.

While going for the preowned look out for the movement with swan neck regulator. That was the update given to the movement. Movements without that upgradation had issued afterwards.
