Tudor Black Bay 79220R
« on: August 21, 2014, 12:24:06 PM »
The purchase of this watch really felt like a limbo.
From the excitement of the announcement back in early 2012, to the actual purchase in mid 2014... and now after a few months.
Feelings can be summarized as high, low and back to high.
I am sure quite a number of MWF forumers owned this watch.
Why wasn't there a review? Since I have some time on my hands and pics stored on my album for quite sometime, maybe I'll give it a go.

The watch that I got actually came on bracelet.
I changed it to the OEM leather strap and buckle.
And of course, I love endlinks to mask the gaps left after mounting on strap.

Watch is 41mm in size, no crownguards so it's definitely wearable.
Dial is matte black... looks dark brown in certain angles... maybe it's due to the rose gold surround markers and hands.
And also the printing on the dial is also done in gold... Too much gold perhaps?
Legibility is not an issue.
The watch exudes a feeling of warmth and nostalgia... just the way it was designed to be.
Throwback to the Tudor Submariners of old.

Love the big crown.
Easy to operate. Screwing and unscrewing felt precise.
Rose logo on the crown is a nice touch.
Winding is smooth.
Movement is of course the ETA 2824... nothing fancy... but gets the job done.
I especially liked it when casebacks are done like this. Flat and close to the middle case.
Makes wearing it more comfortable.

Bevelled polished lugs... all the rage at the moment. Just tell me who doesn't do bevelled lugs now?
Nicely done IMO.
3rd party endlinks fit like a glove too.

Watch felt really good on the original OEM strap.
Although abit on the thin side.

After awhile, decided to do away with the endlinks.
The gaps are not too noticeable to be honest.

After that, decided to switch to a more thicker strap.
All of them feels good and looks good... which certainly show the flexibility of this piece.

When the watch was first announced, it was a high...
Waiting for availability was the low...
After getting it... it was not an immediate high...
It did not felt at home right away.
Gave it sometime like I always do.
And now... it sorts of warms up to me.
Slowly but surely.
Am I on a high yet? Not yet... but getting there.

Han,

Thanks for sharing and the candid writes up.

For me, I am very high in the morning and low in the evening, that is... when I looked at my beloved...watches.  :)

Ahem.

I am almost a recovered watchaholic, but last checked shows only 70% recovered. How?

Ah, the black bay. The piece that was always lukewarm for me. Got it back when it first launched but after a while the burgundy bezel was not really hitting the right notes with me. In a yellow light setting, I loved it. In a white light setting, the burgundy turns to red and I wasnt really feeling it then. After 6 months ownership, felt that it was a good and solid piece but I knew it wasnt going to stay with me much longer. Hence I moved it on shortly thereafter.

I know exactly how it felt.
When i got home with the watch, i immediately felt like "oh shit, should i look at it closer before buying?"
But after giving it some time, it really is a nice watch.
I must admit i was underwhelmed by it at first but it's started to grow on me.
Sometimes i wonder too where this piece fits in my rotation.

I was playing this n the new blue one....

Side by side

Sure red ! Stunning

On wrist... Blue might be more evergreen... Especially with bracelet !

But red on leather strap! Hanz - great taste!
