I can't put together the top ten list, not qualify to do that either, but am always fascinated by Seiko vintage chronograph, and I think 6139 & 6138 must go into this top 10 list.

Something interesting to read.

I would suggest the manual wind models like King Seiko with calibre 4420A, or the early 60s Grand Seiko manual wind with 3180 or 43999 calibres. I was offered the aforementioned KS at a price at a nearly 5 digit price but decided to pass, for now.

Another one that I think should make the list, Seiko 5717. Original release in 1964, among few other watches from Seiko in celebration for being the official time-keeper for Olympic games in Tokyo. Quite rare nowadays and highly sought after by collectors.

I humbly said that I am learning about Seiko vintage, I believe that even the grand master would not said that you are not qualify to give an opinion.

Let me humbly start to suggest some Seiko vintage, any disagreement strongly welcome;

1) Grand Seiko Chronometer 5722-9990
2) King Seiko Chronometer 5625-7040
3) Grand Seiko 6146-8000
4) 6139-6002 Pogue
5) 6138-0040 Bullhead
6) 6138-0011 UFO
7) 6138-0030 Big Blue
8) 6138-0020 Panda
9) 6105-811x 150m
10) 6309-7040 150m

That's my opinion, any different suggestion?

Hi Yoda,

Seiko has been producing watches for so many years and churning out so many models. I guess it's quite a task to just limit the cast to "top ten".   IMHO, there are probably 10 classes of Seiko watches worth collecting:

(a) Military watches (WWII period) - very rare. Perhaps they were worn by Kamikaze pilots so there are not many left... :D :D
(b) Seiko vintage timepieces from the 1950's and 1960's (non-GS, non-KS) - these include the Seikomatics, the Laurels, the Crown...etc.
(c) The vintage Seiko GS and KS of the 1960's and 1970's.
(d) The Seiko Astron - said to be the 1st quartz watch.. We can't discuss Seiko without mentioning its quartz timepieces.
(e) The Seiko automatic chronographs Cal. 6139, Cal. 6138, Cal. 7016.....
(f) Seiko non-shrouded divers - Cal. 6217MAS, 6105-800X, 6105-811X, 6309/6306, 6159-7000, 7545 divers....
(g) Seiko shrouded divers - the mechanical and quartz tunas!!!
(h) Seiko analog quartz chronographs of the early 1980's- Cal.7A28, 7A38 and 7A48. Reputedly the first all analog display chronograph watches in the world. These watches were known to be over-engineered.
(i) Seiko mechanical GMT watches - Cal 6117.
(j) Seiko "special watches" - railroad grade pocket watches, quartz watches with smooth sweeping second hand, anti-magnetic watches...

Have I missed anything??  - Add notes: Yes, I forgot about the Bell-Matics!!! Cal. 4006.

Dear Enkidu

Pardon me for my ignorance.

I agree with you that Seiko had really produced a lot of reputable watches and a big task to just shortlist ten most popular vintage.

But lets bring ourselves into a situation where we have all the vintage Seiko watches in hand and we have to grab only 10 to bring along with us to seek out to another planet and we have to leave this planet forever. Which 10 Seiko vintage watches we will bring along? Of course with other favourite watches too?

Hehe interesting yeah.

Would be great if I could get this into a poll without starting a new thread. Anyway sifus, on purchasing an entry-level vintage Seiko as a first very small step into the world of vintage watches, which would you pick? Say between a bellmatic and a 6139 chrono? I know stuff like Bullheads are much more collectible, but I would rather learn more from making a cheap good purchase (less than RM700?) of a less significant vintage than a poor expensive purchase (also because no money la, student's dilemma) of an iconic vintage piece. Advice is welcome too on other nitty gritty stuff to look out for when attaining vintage pieces.
