Seiko Sumo SPB101J1 vs Tissot Seastar 1000 Powermatic 80
« on: May 31, 2020, 08:00:58 PM »
Hi Guys,

Been considering of adding a diver's watch to my collection. with my budget of around RM 2k, seems like the Seiko Sumo SPB101J1 and Tissot Seastar 1000 Powermatic 80 is more suitable to my taste.

Have been struggling on which to choose. Can help give me some opinion on which is more worth to collect?

https://www.tissotwatches.com/en-my/shop/t1204071705100.html

Of course if you guys have other better suggestion, please do help to let me know as i am currently also scratching my head.

Thank you guys.

I will go for Seiko Sumo.

About 5 months ago, I went to Taiwan hotspring and spent an afternoon there.

Dipped into the scorching hot and icy cold pools with me was the 1st generation blue Sumo. About 2 hours of extreme adverse cold/hot spring water test.

It did not only survive the toughest water resistance test, its accuracy still perfect.

Not sure if you can get either at RM2k nor what you meant by "more worth to collect" but given the two, I would get the Sumo for sure. Why? It is a favourite amongst watch aficionados as it is produced in-house. However from a technical standpoint, the Tissot is superior if you dont bother about anything else. 80hrs power reserve in the Tissot vs 70 in the Sumo. 300m water resistance in the Tissot vs 200m in the Seiko.
Your ONLY job in this world is to make sure that you are happy

One more point to add, powermatic 80 movement has done away the manual adjustment at hairspring.

Sorry but not understand what you mean here. Possible to advise more?

Actually I mean 2K+. Seiko I have check with a few AD in Penang so roughly have an idea on the cost.

Do you guys have other option for me?

@donavan1986

Here you go.

The parts that circled in red are what the manual adjustment for changing the time to be fast(+) or slow(-).

Powermatic 80 movement does not have this feature anymore.

Looking at all these mid range Seikos (Sub wannabe). Most of the looks are slightly different from each other. Only the movements tells them apart.

If you really must have one, save and go for the really top one, like the Marine Master /Grand Seikos, etc.
But that’s just me.

I am almost a recovered watchaholic, but last checked shows only 70% recovered. How?

I’ve had my eyes on Sumo and alpinist. Both awesome pieces and with the new movement, you get 70 hours power reserve if that’s the reason tissot is in the pic.
I like lots of watches but can only afford a few
