Title: Any SLR users?
Post by: terrenceterrence on September 24, 2012, 05:23:02 PM
Just bought 2 SLR Cameras and is wanting to dabble back into film. Still so much to learn and is thinking about taking classes and also learn about darkroom processing.

Any A/MD/MC mount users? Looking for some lens recommendations. Current SLR bodies are X-700 and 600si.

I think develop in shop better?

I would concentrate on taking pics than worry bout anything else if you going back to film.

SLR MUCH easier to use, no fancy gimmicks.

I own a D7000 for a while now but hardly use it. Too big. Anyway, I just use it to point-n-shoot. Thank God for Program Mode...

Back in school, I did have fun doing B/W processing in the school lab. It's fun but stinks.

I only have one SLR which is Nikon Fm2n... i don't like SLR a lot now because of the mirror flapping and can't go slow shutterspeed.. for me, i got blur image when it's lower then 1/60.... i prefer PnS now or rangefinder ;)

when you buy any old SLR, it's always good to make sure the lenses are easy to get too... otherwise, you might end up limiting yourself by  using only one or 2 lenses...

can't help much, i'm not familiar with x700 and 600si :(

Reminds me of developing my own B & W photographs in school in 1960 from shots taken with a Brownie Camera. I still have the B & W photographs with me. It was a great thrill when colour films were introduced. SLRs are great , and shall certainly try one of those mirror-less cameras. My 2 cents' worth.

yeah B&W prints can easily last for 100 years or more unlike colour prints and I have been told that modern digital prints are the worse.

I used a Yashica (forgot which model) given to me by my older bro when i was in highschool.
Happy days indeed, and then got broke developing film. Stopped when i went to college.

Damn the older SLR s are damn sexy!

The truth is film is still better than digital in many ways. But then, things change. Everyone want convenience and fast.
Looking back, I have best memories back in darkroom days. I'm still keeping most of those darkroom equipment except the 5 units enlarger.
My advice, never to late to go for what we have miss.

Just finished my first roll and waiting for the result of the 2nd roll.

Very satisfying I must say. Makes me think before shooting unlike going digital and click indiscriminately.

The MF x700 is way more fun than the AF 600si

Ya in KV. Is it very expensive to repair?

I am having problem with slow focusing, sometimes the auto focus can feel not smooth and takes time..

You'll have to put a deposit of RM20, they will check and give you the quotation. If you agree with the charges quoted, then only they will proceed with the repair and total amount after repair will be less out the RM20 deposit you've placed earlier. If you are not agree with the charges quoted, you can take back your lens and that RM20 deposit will be burned.

Yes, with film SLR cameras, one will have to be on their toes. It is the thinking of all possible angles and functions like f-stop, EV, lightting , focusing - spot ot metered, picture composition, angle of pic etc before you decided to press the shutter.
It is take the picture "Right the First time", IMO.
Nowadays, with a DSLR, one can just take multiple shots and later chhose the best picture. For me there is no thrill in getting the right picture the first time. (Of course, with a DSLR there are other advantages, like convenience, no need to buy extra roll of film etc).

I recommend you to buy fuji x pro 1. It has the same taking shot feel as those days conventional film and look like Leica and can fit Leica lens too.  :Dancing_banana:

My FM2 has been with me for most part of my Uni days. I do pick it up once in a while, whenever I get a chance to get my hands on any roll of films still in existence out there.

I just like playing with things that has knobs....  ;D ;D ;D

I have a Nikon FM2N from the 80's which I still take out and use from time to time. I don't have any of the AiS lenses from the period, so I pair it up with my more "modern" D series lenses. I also carry my digital body out in case there are situations which make it a little "trickier" to meter. I used to buy Ilford HP5 film, but I am quite happy with the fuji across these last couple of years. But of late, since the arrival of my little monster, I don't really have much time for film. So it is back to digital till much later. My FM2N is still mint and I plan to keep it that way...maybe my little boy will learn to appreciate it when he grows up...

Cheers,

The battery grip/motor-drive is my single most loved accessories. I even had to place a special order the vertical button. Just love the weight and the sounds it makes.

Back then, for prints, I'd normally use any Kodak for portraits and events; Fujifilm for landscape. For transparency, Velvia would be my regular choice as I do a lot of scenery. But now, anything goes :)

It’s the photographer and not the equipment. Learn the basics first, like the rule of thirds, simple editing and the understanding the concept of light and shadows. The camera does not matter. Lots of great photos are taken on a simple iPhone these days. Good luck and have fun.

Photography used to be my fave hobby (can't afford 'em watches those days), and that was during the real analogue camera days- I am talking about Nikon FM days, films, filters, lenses, etc. To develop film costed quite a fair bit, so you learnt to sharpen your skills such that there was minimal loss through lousy photographs.

I embraced the digital SLR when it came along, then went into bridge cameras as the technology matured such that the smaller footprints could in fact challenge the actual SLRs.

These days, I tend to take photos just via the smartphone. Why so, you'd ask. Just look at the quality from iPhone and Samsung, and don't get me started on Huawei with its Leica double lens. Lots of in-built filters, and the aperture, speed, etc could be tweaked to suit your intended subject matter. Heck, there's even optional add-on lenses these days (although quality was still relatively poorer than SLRs in this aspect). It's no wonder that smartphones are taking over the roles of cameras these days. If you really want to develop your skills with a camera but can't afford an SLR as yet, the bridge camera would be an equally good option. Just click and click, and push the envelope further. Have fun!

mechanical camera is always a good teacher to teach you about photography,

becoz every shot u need consider , thats how we grow up

digital make it cheap to produce a photo, and honestly i think less, just snap shot style~

miss my pre-owned FM3a
