If you're taking pictures of watches Nikon d3100 is sufficient enough. All I had is just the original lense kit. I thought I was obligated to buy a macro lense to take pics of my watch but later found out that once I zoom in the pictures I've taken in my pc I was amaze that it's actually very clear and accurate detailed. I bought a tripod stand instead. I read somewhere that even with high shutter speed, the pictures uve taken still won't be as clear as a picture taken with tripod. So far that's all I know. Hopefully I'll learn more from all the Sifu here. Hehee... :Dancing_banana:

I recently got a compact semi pro (Nikon P310)...
Then, I realised, it depends on what you want to shoot..
I think Canon is better at shooting people or live things..
But Nikon is better at landscaping, views, etc...
Somehow, the "color" is abit different...

Been using Nikon back in the days of the film. Upgraded the film SLR to the DSLR D80 in 2005. The old lenses are still compatible with this model. Still using it until now.

For me, the cameras has served me for many and have never given me any problems. That should say a lot about Nikon's QC.

In my opinion, if you are a beginner, it is better to go with Nikon at this time.  Nikon seems to less worry about their cheaper models cannibalize their higher end models.  For example the recent released D600 is a much cheaper full frame camera which almost rival the D800 except resolution.  On the other hand, Canon 6D is not close to 5D MKIII.

You want Canon if you value better service support and more lens choices (both cheap and expensive lenses).  Choose Nikon if you want good camera for the money and compatibility with all the old lenses.

BTW, I am owning mostly Canon gears: 1D mkIV, 5D III and L lenses.

Both Nikon and Canon are excellent makers. Choosing to me is just brand preference. Personally I use Nikon D700 and recently I bought the Fujifilm X Pro1.

Yes, a brand is not a issue, because all DSLR basically deliver what you need. Just pick the brand nikon/Canon ( the most popular , avoid those not popular because you will hard ot find the second hand gear , resell value , also you can borrow and interchange with your friends. ) My advise , you go for the brand where your friends and member have, for acmatual easy to learn form each other .
basically : Nikon - photo more bring yellow color ( setting can be adjust , or using software , popular for white guys becasue will bring up skin color not that white )
Canon - photo bringing blue color popular for asian because our skin are yellow and little dark , will bring out more white color of skin ,
I am a heavy user of DSRL , I am a wedding photographer for wedding for the pass 6 years . after going with your experience, all the brand you use delivery the almost same result, color? we do with software ( now a days )

Been using a nikon since 1995. Got a couple of old Nikkor lens from my old F60 SLR that I wanted serviced - guess what, Nikon Malaysia says they cannot service it anymore as it is no longer in production and also no longer supported! Their concern: if they were to open it up and something needs changing, they do not have any parts hence cannot guarantee the job.

Love those lenses - stainless steel bodies not plastic.....

Nikon recommends I sent them to private contractors that could do the job.....

Nikon canon all the same now, all the newer series keep coming out every year. More production means more profit and more common to the world.

I would have to go with Canon. Several years ago I would've reccommended Nikon, but the new EOS's are simple, powerful and well built. Have to go with them.

It depends on a lot of factors. Both Camera makers are great. here are some of the questions you need to ask.

1.) What do my friends use?
The reason for this is simple....Lenses. Lenses are very expensive. Its great if you have a friend that uses the same mount        as you.

2.) Do I have lenses already? If you do have lenses in F or EF then it dont make sense to change format now.

I used to be in the same boat, when I first started.
Nikon?....Canon?.......Nikon?....Canon?
Finally, I bought a sony nex 5.
Can do everything as good as a dslr can.
And couple with the compactness and portability, you couldn't ask for more.

Hi all experts,

I am Jaron. I am new in the MWF. Nice to meet you all.
May need your advice or which brand to buy Canon or Nikon for DSLR?
I would want to take nice close up photos of watches. Which model is sufficient?

I have a friend told me to buy Nikon is better because they are just concentrate to do camera business.

On the other hand, Canon concentrate on camera and printers. If want to get Canon, can just buy a cheap printer and carry out. You still can tell others that you own a Canon.

Im using nikon, quite satisfy with nikon..

why not sony? the mirrorless pretty solid, using A7RIII for quite sometime now, pairing with adapter can use all sort of lens.

just some thought, if only taking close up/macro.. why not try this?

Sony mirrorless if you can, the A7iii is really good value and a great bit of kit.
