Hi Guys,

Can I play? Relaxing at McD.

cd, this is a gorgeous watch! Is this the slow beat or the transitional model?

It's the early 5002, slow 2.5 hertz, 18000vph.

All I can say is... two
The slow beat is definitely a keeper. Do you still have the original fish crown?  Hopefully IWC did not it replace it with the Probus Scafusia crown when you sent it in for servicing.

Thank you for the comments.

It still has the original fish crown. Have not been serviced.

Is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" apply to watches?

An unexpected buy. At the price (the current BC3 would cost more, even after discount), complete with box and paper, what choice do I have....

The before picture.

After a little TLC at my watch guy...

nice blue dial... a throwback of the legendary Ranger design.

A very lucky catch. I agree with the blue dial. Beautiful simplicity.

Errr... Well, everything mechanical will require some form of servicing soon or later. My fear is always, the later it is, the more expensive it will be. I am one who believes in routine maintenance, makes good preventive maintenance practice.

Take my SD for example. It was serviced 2 years ago. However, the former owner screwed up the HEV and water got into the watch. Because I sent it in after I got the watch, they managed to save the dial from water rot. If not, it would have been a RM1,300 dial replacement.

With regards to the original crown, you can request IWC not to change the crown. But IWC may not be able to provide you with the guarantee of water resistance. Also you can request for the old 'fish' crown to be returned to you. Refer attached letter:

Dear Mr. XXXX,

Thank you for your email. I understand your hesitation and thoughts about this issue. I can clearly read your frustration from your email. With my following answer, I hope to provide you with some clarification:

The fish crowns are not produced anymore and are replaced by the new "probus scafusia" crown, which fits the old stamp from IWC perfectly. The "probus scafusia" crown consists of the same high standing quality as the fish crown. The crown will be exchange however only for the following reasons:

1. if the crown is badly damaged
2. if there is an issue with the waterproofness
3. if the client wishes to do so

The new watches which we produce, all have the "probus scafusia" crown.

If you would like to keep the fish crown, we might not be able to guarantee waterproofness of your watch. If you find yourself comfortable with this, the crown would not be exchanged. If we exchange the crown, we can also send the fish crown back to you, as kind of a "souvenir" should you request that. However, if you would have this wish please advice the local IWC dealers in case you would like to send in your watch. The dealers of IWC should be aware of this issue.

I hope that I was able to help you with your request and remain at your disposal should you require any furhter assistance.

Best regards

The Casio Edifice EFA-100 of old. Bought this more than 12 years ago and it is still going strong! Although I bought it for my wife, it looks good on my wrist as well.

Hmm...usually, it is recommended to send the watch for a routine checkup every 5 years. For example, the oil will dry up. Even if you wear it everyday, it is still good to do general service when the time is up. Anyway, everyone has his own idea of when to service the watch...to each his own.

BTW, you can always ask IWC to give you back the fish crown if they need to replace it. As far as I know, IWC has been replacing all the fish crowns when the slow beat is sent for servicing due to WR defect.
