I normally define the affordable watch by the income level. If base on Msia income per capita, any automatic watches below RM 3k is generally considered affordable. The Swatch group brands, Seiko, Citizen, Orient watches for example.

To me, in view of reliable in house movement watch that is other than ETA, only the basic models of Rolex, and Bvlgari with prices ranging from RM 24k to RM 29k.

Note: Don't ask me why must be only up to RM 29k. Because I only know if I buy a watch that its price tag is RM 30k and above, my wife is going to strangle me.

I agree with bro Cocas...watches that are RM3,000 and below are considered to be in the affordable range. Anything more would be a luxury for me

Affordable is directly proportional to income so since we have a wide ranging income in Malaysia, the definition of affordable is also wide.

Let’s exclude the top 1% of Malaysians here, for me there are 2 groups of affordable watches:

Japanese Affordable: Seiko, Citizen, Orient, etc, range rm1k - rm3k
Western Affordable: Tissot, Mido, Hamilton, etc, range rm2k - rm6k

So a decent automatic watch with good time keeping (accuracy), I would say it will be ard rm5k - 6k, personally I am a big fan of entry level Ball watch with COSC at this price range.

Anything below RM3k to me is considered affordable. Reason because with that price. it is like buying a handphone.

A little bit out of the topic with my answer here.. more to food for thoughts..

If you really want something, you will find your way to make it affordable.

Also, to add on, perceived value is also an intangible factor here.. With my own experience, I find buying a 2-3k seiko divers to be affordable, but not a 2-3k Fossil watch.

To give an answer to Mr Meor's topic above, I would say Seikos, Hamiltons, and also Ball range to be affordable and anything more than 15k to be watches that need deeper considerations.

I will not put a particular figure to justify affordable as it's subjective to different people.

IMHO affordable is something that I can wear without caring it too much and maintain / replace without hurting my wallet.

That really depends on each individuals perception and financial standings i guess. When i was in high school, i defined an affordable watch as anything that was below RM1,000.

Now that i have started working, i deem a watch such as a Daytona to be sold at retail to be an affordable watch.

Since there are more new members; maybe we can get more feedback in regards to what is affordable by the forum standard. I think affordable should be something that can be bought by the masses, not back-breaking in terms of pricing and do not command a premium. For me; affordable watches are below RM2,000 these days.

Hmmm...I guess affordability is truly subjective. For me, affordability would be in the region of RM1.2k to 1.5k. That is what i would be willing to spend to experiment with a watch for fun.

I tend to agree that anything you can wear daily without fear or damage or loss would be considered affordable. This amount would vary by individual

Agreed, it is a very individual concept. Affordability in itself implies how significant of an impact it would make to ones lives purchasing the item/maintaining the item/ anything happens to the item. For me a fairer measure would be a portion one's monthly earnings which one can afford to splurge on non-essentials. Because lets face it la, wristwatches - be it a Casio, Parmigiani or Apple - are not essential.

not sure if this formula works...but anything more than your 1 month income equivalent - is a big luxury.

Anything half and below, can be considered as a luxury, anything quarter and below, is affordable.

What do you guys think? Don't shoot me...just a random formula

It also depends on how you define affordability

To me, affordable means replaceable

If you can buy something, damage it beyond repair, and then just shrug and buy a new one, then it's affordable

Depends on ur disposable income. 1-2k is affordable to some but 10-20k is to another. Buy within our means.
