WTA: Anyone know of a good watch restoration outlet
« on: July 14, 2010, 05:29:21 AM »
Hi, can anyone recommend a good, trusted and reliable watch outlet in KL/PJ that does excellent restoration work for vintages (make it look new again)? I have a 1601 with a tarnished hour and minute hand. Please PM me with suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Do you have pics of the watch?
Maybe easier for us to relay the message and help you find if we at least know the extent of the damage.

Okay, i'll take a shot of it this Friday when i get it back from Watxhxs of Switzxxland at Tropicana City Mall. Was told by its propriertor Edwin, we don't restore unless you service it with us. That's so crappy.

I told him it was recently serviced. Neway, to cut the story short, the hour and minute hand has tarnish, no more shine. Will put up the pics soon for your advice. Thanks in advance guys

interested, pm for more details.

I am almost a recovered watchaholic, but last checked shows only 70% recovered. How?

Don't get me wrong.

When you need to service your precious time pc, it better to sent it to proper shop with established name and get a receipt to vouch for its repair.

Of course, I would never sent it to anybody without any authenticable reception without any back up insurance..

If in doubt, best sent it to AD for repair works. In this manner, your property would be protected / insured in case of losses or theft.

If your repairer can do a good job with reasonable charges and with optimum protection, why not. Who cares if he sublet to outsource.

For example, my 16014 takes about rm 450 to service with tube and crown change, and I am payng approx. rm500 for the whole repairs, never mind paying extra rm50 for peace of mind (insurance against losses and theft)

Most of us here do not really personally know any good watch repairer.

So to opt for the second best, it appropriate to sent it to the repairer you know and most important the one you trust.

my 2 cts

Dc,

I got ur point. But if I knew a watchmaker with gd repo can do a gd job with lower price but without a shop, I will still send it to him compare with a shop who never do himself.

When he don't repair himself, how he control the quality and when small problem detected, it will take u wks solve it. Even when u send over, he can't give u quote till he hand it to a real watchmaker. Some of shop like this will even charge u for quotation if u dun agree with the quoted price!

If I were to pay 70% of original service center price then I better go back to service center ....

To me is what u look for, if u want 100% safe then should go straight to brand/group service center!

Chris – Thanks for the clarifications.

Many would have agreed that we ourselves know our friendly repairer, be it watches, automotive, the electrician, plumber etc, well enough to entrust the job to them.

My profession is automotive. I am well verse on certain car make & model. I can tell how many mounting bolts and its sizes in diameter mounted on its flywheel. But then I cannot say the same for other make.

The same goes for the individual watch repairer, he/she may do well and skillful on say…an omega movement. But when you give her / him a JLC movement, this repairer may have problem. He still accepts your watch but eventually sublet to outsource.

Instead of running around looking for the JLC specialist, I / we might as well hand the watch over to our friendly and trusty repairer to save the hassle. (my actual experience). Yeah, that time, the quotation was delayed. And eventually, all things work out fine.

Now, imagine if entrusted this JLC to an individual ( with no formal reception) and then try calling her / him days later for quotation with no respond (or the phone always dead), this is no laughing matter and you will break into cold sweat. Don’t playx2..
But then, I am sure you have to trust them in the first place. right?

So as is, thanks again and we are sharing our experiences everyday to all.

My 2cts again…
