Hie, Would like to know your opinion on junghans watches and brand name. They have one of the best classic simple design in my opinion but I'm not sure the price is too expensive for the brand.
-
Price is a very personal thing and only you yourself can answer if that watch is "worth" that asking.
What seems cheap to you may be A LOT to others.

Just a Brief Intro of Junghans the German watch Brand

Then Junghans switched their focus to Radio Control technology during the Quartz Crisis (whereas a lot of other brand actually forced to shutdown or joined SWATCH group), they had survived and come out the world 1st radio control wrist watch.

At year of 2000 the company had sold off to Egana Gropius HK based company and faces insolvency at year 2008.
Today the Junghans is owned by the Schramberg Steim Family (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans-Jochem_Steim), which also own manufactory that produces and supplies springs to Junghans when Junghans are producing their in-house movement during 1950s.

Whereas the company is lead by Mr. Matthias Stotz who graduated as a master watch maker, with strong financial position and clear direction they are growing steadily, they now cut off collection that are not within their Corporate Identity (example like attache, diplomat etc) and start reducing the production of quartz watches.

They are the very few watch brand that has the "real" stories and still able to survive as independent.
Thanks for the time..you are paying for a German Watch brand that has got the heritage and originality, even today the company still produces watches at place where they started the businesses.

-
TJ,
What manual wind movements does the Max Bill use in the photo above?
-
The first batch of Max Bill is equipped with in-house J84 (produced during 1955~1967), which are the last few in-house movement produced by Junghans.
The last movement produced by Junghans is J85 during (produced during 1961~1967) and at this period of time Junghans had already started supplementing the watches with ETA, Valjoux, Buren and other manufacturer. Until year 1976 Junghans had stop the entire production of mechanical watches. Thus the older batch of Max Bill might using ETA movement as well.
The most obivious way to ID the Junghans movement is looking at the shock absorber.
-
Its a real pity that their in house movement is not produced anymore.
Sad to think they can do it before but not now.
Hope they can revive their movements since a lot are going back to this route with ETA situation now.
-
Thank you TJWN, I learned a lot from your post.
Now I look at Junghans in a totally different perspective.
-
There' are still a lot of Junghans stories to be tell....
There are two books that has got most the stories of Junghans covered.

-
TJ, why is Max Bill 'infamous'?
Regards,
Max Bill is known for his Max Bill by Junghans collection in watch industry. However, in terms of architecture design and politics, he had done things differently from the others, he had contributed a lot to today's modern architecture design which was not common at that time. And in-terms of political he is actually an anti-fascist, Max Bill life is full of stories and not just designing a watch for Junghans.
could go to http://www.maxbillfilm.ch/filme/001/txt_02_en.php to read the sypnosis on the documentary:Max Bill – the master’s vision

Recently dropped by one of the shop at Bangsar Village (selling a few German branded watches) - managed to try on some Junghans' watches. The finishing of the watches are amazing, and it feels different when it is put on the wrist as compared to viewing it from pictures. The Meister Chronoscope (40-41mm) was my favourite.
Some of the date-just designs, like the Meister Classic, are stunning but made 38-39mm - which may be a bit small for some.
-
Thats what the german do..preserve the original and traditional design.. :D

The original military use Junghans Chronograph J88s, had a matte twelve sided bezel (is there a word for this? xxxgon?) A pilot watch is always comes with a matte surface at that time as it wont reflect the sun-lights which affect the pilot sights.

Some Press Release from the Brand
2013 is the calendar year of the Junghans Meister
The year 2013 is the year of classic Meister watches at Uhrenfabrik Junghans. The new Meister Kalender and Meister Agenda complications are worthy additions to the successful range of elegant timepieces. With the Meister Chronometer Gold Junghans is also continuing the series of limited edition collector's pieces in real gold.
History of the Junghans Meister
Production of the first Meister models in the 1930s heralded the dawn of a new era for Junghans. In addition to their appearance, the Meister watches are characterised by their intricately refined movements. By 1936 the calibre J80 was already equipped with a central second, for example. The finest model was the J80/2 movement, decorated with Côtes de Genève, viewed as the centrepiece of the Meister watches. From 1951 the Meister models also benefited from the J82 chronometer movement with its unusually large screw balance, which was perfected continuously until its production ceased in 1960, having been fitted to thousands of officially tested chronometers. The current Meister range stands once again for the mechanical expertise in watchmaking at Junghans, further underscored by the "Made in Germany" seal of quality.
The 1952 Meister
(https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/p206x206/5858_396397473804135_914189060_n.jpg)
Limited Meister Chronometer Gold
One particular treasure is the Meister Chronometer Gold: limited to just 99 timepieces, it is a stylish combination of classic design and the highest accuracy. The delicate interaction between the 18-kt. rose gold case and the ivory-coloured dial enables the classic face of the Meister Chronometer to shine in the warmest of hues. Equipped with the J820.1 movement, the model has references to the 1950s, an era of significance for Junghans, when the company was the third largest manufacturer of chronometers worldwide. Like the current Meister Chronometer, the historic chronometer calibre J83 was already equipped with an automatic winding mechanism. Today, it is still viewed as one of the finest movements to be manufactured in Germany. As a continuation of its historic predecessor, the new Meister Chronometer Gold manifests a strong historic connection. As in the J83, it contains a hairspring in Nivarox 1 quality manufactured by Carl Haas, with the blue colour exclusive to Junghans. It makes a major contribution to ensuring that the Meister Chronometer Gold receives its official certificate of accuracy. With the unusual blue hairspring and the fine limitation Junghans highlights the exclusivity of this watch.

Meister Kalender
The moon has been a key companion to mankind since time immemorial. It helps provide orientation regarding time and space, controls the tides of the oceans and is extolled by poets as a mystical heavenly body. The energy and grandeur of the moon has inspired the watchmakers at Junghans to offer this heavenly body a worthy stage in a Meister watch. The clear positioning of the week day and month outside of the centre of the dial means that the Meister Kalender enjoys optimal legibility. In keeping with the rest of the range, the moon phase with date display has a bowl-shaped bezel, which lends the timepiece its masterful appearance. The design of the Meister Kalender is harmonious down to the tiniest detail, with the stars of the moon display glowing in the respective case colour of silver, yellow or rose gold. One highlight can be discovered when viewing the heavenly bodies: a Junghans star, lighting up the firmament.
Meister Agenda
The Meister Agenda is a precious watch in more than one sense of the word. Because it combines fine aesthetics with unusual complications. In addition to displaying the week days and date, calendar week and power reserve also have their bowl-shaped place on the dial. The Meister Agenda facilitates the planning of activities with its calendar week display making it ideally suited to the requirements of business life. A Junghans-specific movement modification that positions the day display in a window lends symmetrical order to the individual functions. The dial is set in a stainless steel case with a diameter of 40.4 mm, with an optional gold-coloured finish. High-quality straps in alligator leather, horse leather or stainless steel round off the elegant appearance of the Meister Agenda.

This is the brief intro of the Erhard Junghans collection :) :)
The Erhard Junghans collection is the series that pays tribute to the founder and named after him.
This is the higher end collection after the Max Bill, Meister and Bogner. Which using movement derived from non swiss mechanical movement but the finest movement from Japan. The collection consist of three range:
1) Aerious: 46.6mm pilot watch with ergonomically designed chrono pusher.
2) Creator: Unique german design, make use of spaces between the bridge on the dial to create retrogrades.
3) Tempus: Classic watches with Roman Numerics.
The collection was launched in year 2006, at that time, the company was managed by Heinz W. Pfeifer (Guy who bought over Glashütte Original at year 1994 and successfully revived both Glashütte Original and Union and sold to swatch group at year 2000)
The watchmakers manufacture the Erhard Junghans watches at the same spot (Junghans Schramberg facility) where their special history began. The original company building now houses state-of-the-art workbenches still imbued with the spirit of Erhard Junghans.
Two movement was introduced, It was the new Caliber J890, a classic column wheel chronograph movement with date and power reserve indication, the movement was derived from the base movement 6s37 or SII TC78 of SII (Seiko Instrument Incorporation) the movement was used in Seiko Credor watches. However the J890 had one additional jewel, 41 jewels instead of 6s37 40 jewels.

For the both the Automatic and Chronoscope the accuracy of the movement ETA2824-2 and ETA 7750 is "at least" -2/+12 and adjusted in 3 position ;D

Welcome to the world of junghans. Good catch.

I blink and it was gone. Congratulation, nice watch.

This is the Meister range entry piece, pay tributes to their Meister range first introduced during 1930's. The horse skin strap of their Meister range complimented the watch very well where there's not much watch brand is using horse skin in the current market

yep.. blink and it s gone... anyway... congrats to the new owner :) u one hell of a lucky fella :)

Great review and nice watches I'll say.

went to a watch shop tht sell junghans in pavillion just now...
very sad that i was treated like dirt by the sales girl.... the price tag was RM8,880, so i asked her if there s any discount, and she replied "these are good watches, unlike citizen etc, these watches don't give discount!" .... sigh, feel so sorry for her.

If I were you, I will complain to the manager. What kind of sales personnel attitude is this?

Their current range of watches is very little if you exclude those radio control watches: Radio control watches is still having a significant volume to Junghans as we can see they actually still coming out new model (color, material) for their current radio control line-up; which is function at Europe, USA, Japan and some part of China, However in Malaysia we would not able to make use of it as the movement could not capture the frequency over here? (need radio wave expert to explain this...)
Could see that their current focuses is on Meister range and adding variances to Max Bill design without changing the bauhaus element in the original.

Hi, I bought a Junghans Voyager Mega when i was working outside of Malaysia. Was attracted by the design -simple yet elegant. The radio frequency technology was impressive - my first thought was - this is a good watch for people who travels much.
When I got back to Malaysia for good early this year - I realised that the radio frequency in Malaysia is different than Japan and Europe (apparently I did not do enough prep work). Thus, the auto-adjustment functionality went hay wire and the watch was un-usable.
I am not very sure if there is a way to ""twik" the watch so that the I can use this lovely Junghans Voyager Mega in Malaysia. Can any experts in the know share your opinion please? If needed, I would not mind going to any shop/service center to get it fixed.
Having said all this - i personally still like this watch alot. Gotta say - Junghans is a fresh breath to me after looking at all the swiss made watches adverts (with all due respect to swiss made watches).
-
Was looking for the Junghans Meister Telemeter in Frankfurt and Cologne tapi tak jumpa. Wonder if it's already available in the market? ???

Unfortunately, currently there's no way to modify of upgrade the movement ....in Malaysia the distributor only brought in their Mechanical line of watches. ;D

Size: 38mm
Height: 10mm
Movement: ETA 2824-2
Front Crystal: Plexiglass
The value of the watch is more skewed toward the Max Bill 1960's design, it is standard in terms of horological specification.
The design was too "modern" for the 1960's people :Blue: but it become relevant and accepted by the public today

Depends on how you sees Junghans, In terms of price point, it is similar with swiss brand like Longines, Frederique Constant and Maurice Lacroix.
It is expensive if you compare it with Tissot, Certina, Mido, Steinhart....
There's two different collection which are more famous: the Max Bill and the Meister with the Meister with slightly higher price point.
Junghans is a "real" German watch brand that their story heritage is all true not marketing history one, I had personally visited their facility in Schramberg and would say this a German Giant that is still sleeping....

Junghans is again the largest German watchmaker
After the take over by the Schramberg based Steim Family at year 2008, today, with around 50,000 watches annualy, Junghans is again the largest German manufacturer.

Junghans used to be the largest watch making company in Germany. I would recommend you to look at its Maxbill or Meister line which has bauhaus-inspired design.
Worn and wound had recently review one of their watches (Meister Kalendar)

Cool watch

Ive always wanted the Max Bill series however i am cursed with a small wrist with lady like hand.
And i wish that they used sapphire glass instead. Love the design otherwise.

This is the Junghans Form A automatik. This watch is a minimalist piece that I use for work everyday.
It looks luxurious but it doesn’t shows off. Brilliant for meeting with potential clients. Most of my clients bought Junghans after they saw this piece.

As far as I know most the local AD only gives out 10-15% in manner of discount. I believe this is what the distributor advices the retailers to give.
Also i have only managed to track only a few Junghans AD in KL. And they’re not too many. Both Parkson KLCC and Pavilion carries them. A watch shop in Bangsar Village and another one in Midvalley on the ground floor. Even though they are the local distributors they do not carry many models of their line.
I managed to track down the pieces I like. My advice look to the model that you like at their website and try asking them at the local AD.
Honestly speaking most of them don’t even know the ref no of the items.

I made several calls and trips.
Found out a few things I'd like to share:
1. The Max Bills at Parkson is a waste of time, all models are quartz.
2. Better to Facebook message the AD that's listed on Junghans to find out if they have the stock of the particular model that you are looking for before going to see them.

What is the accuracy?
-
I would rather go for a Nomos. But that's just my opinion.
-
Really interested to buy junghans maxbill chrono. Not sure 38mm suit my 8 inches wrist cause ive worn 38mm before and it look small and not really a fan.

I understand the size seems a bit small. However, the size is quite accurate according to the era. In fact I think it’s bigger compared to watches during those time. I think most watches at the time was at 36.
However, if the size is an issue I think you should look at the Form A or Form B instead. The sizing is bigger compared to the Max bills. It is a much more modern with a more modern movement. And it is much better constructed as well.
I won’t recommend the Max bill chronograph if you think the size of the normal Max bill is small. The chronograph may seem bigger on paper it does wear smaller on the wrist.
I am a fan on all the watches and have all of them in my collection. They sits nicely next to the Rolexes and omegas in the case as well

I’m actually a fan of Nomos as well. My only gripe with the watch is that because they make their own movements for their watches ( which is beautiful btw ) . There are nowhere in Malaysia for you to service them. Which is a bummer for me.
I have to travel to Singapore if the watch is in need to service and that just adds to the cost of the watch as a whole in my opinion.

Hi, Yeah i think it really is according to that era. Maybe some prefer smaller watch. But most of watches from 36-40mm look really nice. Thanks for the input. Appreciate it.

I agree that the Meister Pilot is quite big at 43mm. Following traditions, it is usually big for pilot watches. Best examples are Laco pilot watches. Some of them are quite humongous. I don’t mind the 39 but the original size ones are like cooking pans on your wrist. But it is still nice though. Especially if you put a bund strap with them

I have the Junghans Max Bill and it is a great everyday dress watch although the rotor can be quite loud when winding the watch.
