Is this forum dying?
« on: May 12, 2020, 02:23:11 PM »
Sorry to bring this up but I see very little activity here and was just wondering...
Thought that it would be a vibrant community but it seems that it's not the case.
I post pictures of watches in nature:

And do some reviews and fun videos:

Quite a number of us are the pioneer here.
Sad but true, many of the active members have not visits this forum for some time many moons past.
Maybe they have had found new interest / hobbies. Or is it too many of these watch forum inventory in our present scenario, esp on Facebook.

Sometimes, Personally,I find my post/s are vetted through out before permitted to post and or maybe the rules are quite strict not like the good old days. But that’s just me.

I dared say, people who mainly posted here are the Sellers and potential buyers looking for good deal. But then private sellers here placed their wares on par with dealers price without back up services or warranty.

My 2 cents.
dc
I am almost a recovered watchaholic, but last checked shows only 70% recovered. How?

I agree with bro dc. Have been on this forum for a good number of years as well. My opinion on the current situation is that I find that posts on this forum lack engagement maybe due to the nature of the posts or replies. Some posts ask for member feedback but there is no update after feedback has been given. Some posts are just informative with no need for member feedback. Sometimes you don't even know how to reply to some of the replies here. Hence now I am just an active browser in the forum and only post where I feel I can contribute.
Your ONLY job in this world is to make sure that you are happy

I have been to different watch forum.

Some looks busy and alive but I find them wasted. Many topic keep repeating. The passion towards watches are very surfaced.

Just once a while drop by here, sharing the new watch and some special/unique , that'll make my day already.

Agreed with many of the bros here, nowadays are mostly wrist shots, much less on watches review and knowledge sharing like what we used to do here in MWF. Missed those good old days.

Not only here but many other similar websites too. Problem is social media like IG which is faster, interactive and with worldwide audience. Not helped by Covid19, MCO and downturn in economy. If you have no or less income how to continue supporting this hobby?

Woah, good to hear from the seniors. I guess the Insta thing is really causing a ripple effect on forums. I notice that even lowyat is kinda slowing down. Hmm...

@swleong bro. To submit wrist shot to MWF is hard too. As the photo size nowadays is easily exceeded 1m, so much trouble to shrink the size to below 512k.

I have to agree strongly. I want to post lots of pics but really annoyed that the platform uses the photobucket thingy instead of a direct upload.

Sorry to go off topic here but out of curiosity I clicked on your instagram link and before Instagram kicked me out for not having an account, I caught a glimpse of your photography and for the lack of a better word, your photography is just Wow! You are an amazing photographer and i'm truly impressed. Wow!

I remember several reviews here, which I bookmarked and am working my way there, slowly. But yes, the forum seems quite dead. Everyone just trying to sell, sell, sell. It seems the purpose is just to hype the latest release (usually Rolex) then aim to acquire and flip. Everyone is talking about flipping. Honestly, quite boring.

Thanks a bunch man! Actually the strange thing is that the love for watches got me posting on instagram which in turn made me interested in photography.  :)
But to be honest, I still don't have good gear (just my phone and a bridge camera) but here's to hoping someday I might!

The review sections has died following some of the sifus retirement from watch collecting (and "culled" most of their collections).

Some older MWF members can even remember the time this forum had a super "hot" and exciting "debates" of certain brand is considered a fashion watch instead of real watch...

Those are the days....

Yes, I remember them well. I was very new to the forum then. Some way or another, I have connected with some of the sifus and now a lot of talk happens in group-chats instead. Reality is, the world has kind of moved away from forum boards, as people expect instant response/gratification.

Thought that it would be a vibrant community but it seems that it's not the case.

I thk most of the watch forum are badly affected by the fast and direct response social media like FB and IG. Nowadays is not easy to run a watch forum especially the youngster prefer to interact thru FB/IG/Reddit/Tweeter.

Kuods to those posted in this thread like DC, G.Mac , Cocas, Spider boy ( ya I remember you - gtr guy) and swleong. You guys are the veteran in this forum.

one of the very few moderator still active in this forum is meoramri… kudos to him!!

yes.. this I do agree on this issue. Would be easier to just be able to post directly here. Photobucket is quite limited for a free account.

I’m very new here and imho, as a fairly impartial “outsider” observer, this site is “caught in the middle”...

Doesn’t have the engaged active members that make a good old school forum work ie. substantial percentage of highly engaged members willing to make good high quality posts, members willing to help each other, those receiving help following thru to help others in turn, lots of heated but fair non-judgmental non-childish debates, geeky tech info, etc. I’m sure at some point(s) in the past, this forum was all that, but as an observer, I don’t see much of it now.

On the other hand, it also doesn’t have the immediacy and visual delight of new school social media... whether IG/YT/FB etc that are vibrant with infinite photos and videos. Always there to feed us with instant shots of dopamine from watch porn, just with the flick of a thumb. If anyone wants to replicate that here, it’s hard to compete with having to jump thru hoops to post any pictures.

So it’s caught in the middle. Neither here nor there.

But OP has brought up a good reminder that maybe we can all play our part to make this a better old school forum by creating depth of content? Imho, forget about trying to be like social media which is all on the surface. Forums can’t compete as the nature of the beast is entirely different.

Just want to chime in a reply in show of support to MWF !

I too find it quite difficult to post wristshot here due to photo size. Always trying my best to chime in thoughts on as my posts as I can but there isn't really much new posts around..

Also, I would like to tell new members or those around that there are NO such thing as stupid questions and in fact many questions posted in the watch section brings up lots of discussion albeit its a small topic.

I still come into the forum everyday as it has been a routine for me when I switch on my laptop.

Cheers guys,
Dexson L

Download Tapatalk to upload photos with ease...I also log in everyday to see what is new. In response to what the OP posted...this forum is not dying, it is just filling up with buyers and sellers and nothing much else to post. What IMHO this forum needs, is...more ppl sharing their personal feelings and how that particular watch fits his/her wrists. More photos and more watches for sharing and how it really performs in the real world of the owner instead of what we read on watch magazines etc...I know that there are some forum members who try to keep it alive, like our brother Meor and Cocas...hats off to them and their efforts.

May I suggest that we post a pic of one of our watches...wear it and then share with the rest how that watch wears, how you think it performs, how practical or impractical that watch is for everyday wear, or it is best suited for a particular activity etc...

Just a suggestion...and lets see where it goes...cheers to all and let’s do our bit to make this forum interesting
