Title: Best Value (bang for your buck) watches
Post by: BigPicture on September 08, 2017, 08:30:21 PM
I am a firm believer in getting good value for my $ and although watches tend to be very personal choices I do believe we can agree that certain watches are better value than others.

Id like to start this thread by highlighting the Tissot Ballade Powermatic 80 COSC

https://www.tissotwatches.com/en-my/shop/tissot-ballade-powermatic-80-cosc.html

This watch has a anti magnetic silicon balance spring, 80 hour power reserve and COSC standards for about RM4k!

Heres another, the Seiko Presage SARX033 in house movement, sapphire glass, specially treated metal (hardened) for about RM3500. Build quality and finishing (reviewers say) rivals in Swiss watches 3 times more expensive.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170908/aabcc39cf05dda7c544dba326e97e287.jpg)

All Seiko watches represent best bang for buck, in my opinion.

Actually I should have mentioned that I was posting bang for buck premium/luxury class mechanical watches. I would consider seiko and citizen to have watches of that class but not Casio or times. The seiko I posted was a presage line which is the highest non- grand seiko.

Best value imho is the Seiko 5, where else can we get everything for less the RM500?

Seiko 5 Sports would be the good choice!

I have 3 pieces so far and they were bought at different times and places. But their sturdiness and durability still the same. Their design also never out of fashion.

I will put up their get together photo later.

SARB033, with 6R15 movement, sapphire crystal, 50-hour power reserve and superb finishing is great value for its price.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170913/4b747d851fd8d9fb64bd71a9c13cfd15.jpg)

Omega seamaster 300m diver or tudor blackbay if you like dive bezel watches, Omega speedometer professional if you like chronographs, and consider some nice bell & ross like the vintage series if you like something in between.

Seiko will always be one of the most valuable watches in my dictionary. I might even consider going into seiko house clocks when my house is ready  ;D

Affordable yet decent in their quality. Orient and gshock come close to second. Well, those higher ends do have better quality but this will be my go-to-watches when I travel overseas or doing my technical work.

For Japanese watches, Seiko is my preferred bang-for-buck pick. Seiko, being affordable, is a great platform for mods too- another one of my hobby.

For Swiss watches, it would go to Ball. Both these brands have their own design identities and no others could beat their Lumibrite / Tritium tubes as yet.

Sometimes, I find that there are just too many brands stuffing in a movement into a homage case, and marketing it only for the revenue; so it's great to see Seiko and Ball still championing their own direction all this while.

I don't know about others , I find Ball incorporates design elements mainly from Rolex (eg. Product naming , ceramic bezel, shock system, marketing eg. Achievement /exploration, etc) and some from other brand such as Omega (aquaterra hand, caseback engraving, etc), Etc ..

Somehow I find Ball is very similar to Rolex in their marketing and product approach and overall positioning (albeit different level)

Anyone with similar thoughts ?

For pure value, I say Seiko or Orient. Can't beat the classic Japan brands.

For value and a bit of history, Laco or Stowa, if you like fliegers (navigation watches).

Personally, i think there are quite a number of micro brands that do prove to be value for money. Namely, Zelos and Vilhelm. Usually within 1k range, ETA movement, play with unique materials like bronze, carbon fiber, titanium and ceramic, and intriguing designs.

I personally feel that a beautiful watch is the Tissot Visodate which is below 2K with a discount - handsome, reliable and versatile.
Tool watch wise, I dive and I use a Vostok Amphibian 120512 which is mad reliable and it cost me less than 300 ringgit off the bay.

I second this!

Extremely best bang per buck for what you get. 350usd = RM1300+.

Impeccable stepped case finishing, brushed top lugs, stepped polished sides and polished bezel.

Sapphire crystal with seiko hardlex display back

No nonsense glossy black brownish baton dial with dauphine hands and seconds hand resembling a sewing needle.

Seiko 6r15 23 jewel movement beating at 21,600 bph. Rated at +25/-15 seconds a day. Seiko leaves a big gap in their accuracy ratings, mine run plus 4 seconds a day  ;D

All in all, it's not a watch you buy to impress others. But you know that it's such a high quality watch to be had at this price point.
