Old or New? Speedmaster or Elprimero ??
« on: November 07, 2013, 02:28:16 PM »
I am planning to buy a watch for my wedding. A watch that will witness the historical moment of a life time!
Okay now given the budget of around 12K.
I am a great fan of Zenith Elprimero T-open 4021! Okay, found used one with full set of box and cert and nice condition at around 12K.
Meanwhile am also a warm fan of Speedmaster 3570.50. A brand new one is almost the same price or slightly cheaper!
How should i choose??
Old or New?
Zenith Or Omega?
Please advise all sifu there~

First of all, congratulation
Well, have you tried both on your wrist? Which one sing to you more?
The next thing you want to consider is are your ok with hesalite crystal and manual winding?
The EP is beating at 36,000 bph and I presumed it will wear off sooner that speedy.
If you ask me, well, am bias, I'll go for 3570.50
If you ask hanz079, am sure he'll go for EP  ;D

IMHO, after awhile you will tire of the 'open heart' design that was introduced by Thierry Nataf and he's long gone from Zenith

'Open heart' and 'tourbillons' are world's apart in their aesthetical aspect as you can remain fascinated by the brilliant craftmanship of a multi-axis spinning cage in a tourby but an open heart only reveals an ordinary escapement.

Assuming you are talking about new only, for RM 12K you have some good choices but you need to set parameters before anyone can suggest.
leather strap/bracelet, simple date watch or complications, black or white dial, formal or casual,
Swiss, German, Japanese or it doesn't matter, etc

Some obvious choices
From RM10K- Omega, Tudor
From RM 15K- Rollies, IWC, JLC, GS

See if u can stretch your budget to RM15K and you'll have lots more choice.
Its worth the stretch, believe me.

For pre-owned RM 12K can get you plenty.

Personal taste and preferences evolve over years, hopefully not 1 full circle otherwise it means we haven't learnt a single thing.

Ck77 is definitely right.
I would go for the Zenith.
But seeing that the 2 choices provided is quite contrasting.
The Zenith Chronomaster Open Reserve De Marche is a dressy watch.
While the Omega Moonwatch is as sporty and robust as they come having been tested by NASA and approved for all manned space mission.
Of course until recently, the Felix Baumgartner stratosphere jump sort of shake the Moonwatch mantle abit...  ;D

For me, if you pit these two "brands" side by side, I would go for Zenith.
Reason is that for almost the same amount of money, you get an all in house legendary chronograph.
A watch that is less "common" than a Moonwatch.
But like I said, it's just me.
Of course some might argue otherwise but in the end, it comes down to your preference.
Both watches are awesome in it's own right... just boils down to which one you would like to wear day in day out...

Terrenceterrence "seriously, i think buying a watch for it's secondhand value is like getting married and thinking about divorce at the back of your mind."

Lol.... Yes Hanz you are biased ! I have both the watches and I do love my lemania aka moon watch more than the other . And it's first watch to moon , I know Rolex and others went too but still omega was the first :p  . You can wear the omega in leather strap if u want to be slightly more formal and the size seem to fit better than the zenith .

Well, I am biased too ahahahhaha ! Aren't we all are ?

Zenith over Omega but one without the open escapement. That hole in the watch gets tiring after looking at it for awhile.

had speedy before, i find it not comfort to wind the watch, maybe due to the "skirt" design, love the look of it no doubt

but if in your case between this two model, i'd go for zenith, perhaps the iconic tri-color with size of 38mm, open heart usually huge which lose the dressy look

Depends what sort of person you are. If you are the classical type and do appreciate lineage, without a doubt go for the Speedmaster. If your style borders on the contemporary and occasionally a bit showy, then choose the Zenith.

That model number points to the older 40mm version:

Newer 42mm version looks better IMHO.

I'll take the preown Zenith over the new Speedmaster.
Especially now with a lot of preown watches that looks like new.
You can't deny that Zenith has a much better "pedigree" than Omega.
For that fact alone,I think for same amount of budget,Zenith.
Unless you personally like Speedmaster, than go for it,cos at the end of the day no rational explanation matters except yours!

I really doubt that you could get the new EP Chronomaster Reserve for RM12k used. I am quite sure it is the older model. If it is indeed the new one, I would not hesitate to grab it!

??? I am asking if it is the new model...not if it is a new watch. It is extremely clear that he was considering the used EP or a new Speedy.

The model number points to the old 40mm model.

I'd go for the Omega Speedmaster Professional for its iconic and historical reason. Classic, timeless, no-nonsense look as well.

the main plate that holds the balance wheel on the Zenith el primero doesn't look completely finished to me. Even before i knew what was inside an El Primero, that open heart design still didn't click with me.
I'd go for the Speedmaster, classic, timeless, and new stock. heh
Each handmade watch is sold with part of the watchmakers soul. The effort to make the watch perfectly flawless like a gem, takes a lot of the watchmakers concentration. You pay for the "Loving attention" they give to each movement and watch.

hi farhanbh100 and all, thanks for all your good advice and i appreciate that so much. But farhanbh100, unfortunately im not a Tag H fan. Im just solely amazed by the history of Zenith EP for its legend calibre which once ran the Rolex Daytona

Speedmaster no doubt a great watch too as it was the only qualified watch that passed all the test in NASA and finally get into the moon. NASA would give up the US maker like Hamilton and go for the Swiss make speaks everything of the watch... that amazed me alot!
