Some watches disposed in the past for various reasons...
« on: February 22, 2014, 09:41:20 PM »
Was reviewing one of my HDDs today and came across pictures which I had taken of watches disposed in the past…
Unfortunately I didn't have the habit of taking pics of every single watch previously esp. those disposed…

Hope to come across more pics of previously disposed watches as and when I review the older HDDs from time to time..especially my 2 TAGs and the 3 other Rollies

An interesting record of the journey and how my taste has changed looking back, as I've no regrets in selling any of them

In no chronological order of disposal….

Ltd Boutique edition but found the various hands to be poorly finished under a loupe

Sold to acquire Polaris

The look became bland after a while although time keeping was excellent..

Kept poor timing even after regulation.. dial wasn't as black as I'd like it to be… the newer black enamel dial Speedmaster is lovely but price is unjustified

Excellent timekeeper and robust. This watch took over from the B&R by Sinn for scuba duties but the orange look became passé after several years and the dial wasn't as jet black as I'd like it to be..

The last of 4 Rolexes to be disposed…no regrets on selling but if I had sold it now I would have doubled my money

I let this IWC go as it wasn't special in any way and replaced it with a ceramic Top Gun chrono… at least the case is unique and scratch resistant with a IWC modified 7750

These 2 Epos were bought very impulsively (got persuaded by the SYT behind the counter) and sold not long after…
The dials attracted me at first but that didn't last long. Nothing of interest and substance under the dial- just Anton Schild and ETA ebauches

Used for my scuba trips for > 15 years…reliable companion but not an outstanding timekeeper. Hated the 7750's wobbly rotor and shifting hands when crown was reset. Sinn must have used the lowest grade 7750 ebauche.

Another impulsive purchase due to a SYT's sweet talk…luckily it didn't cost much…
A certified COSC chronometer for under RM 5K… but after a short while.. so what…just another regulated ETA

After awhile found the Ananta case unsuitable for my wrist, besides a GS had replaced its functions of GMT with an added chrono.
Timekeeping as expected for a SD was +1 sec per WEEK….but too bad the casework just didn't gel with me

A hand wind homage to Cartier tank watch bought wayyyyyy backkkkk when I couldn't afford the real McCoy..

Farewell gifts from friends.. initially kept for sentimental reasons but got tired of replacing the batteries without ever using them

JO,

It seem it is hard to get proper black dial nowadays unless it's the super glossy type from Rolex.

I notice this recently.

I didn't know you dive, that's cool but please don't take the TTP68 for a test.  ;)

To avoid falling into the SYT impulse buying trap, I always deal with the male species when it comes to high end watches.
I like your sense of realism with the Cartier tank lookalike.

That was a great collection all by itself. Would be interesting to see what you will be getting to replace them with. Any new sights in the horizon?

hi DC,
these were only some of the watches disposed as I didnt have the habit of taking pics of watches in the past.
I didn't always replace watches I sold immediately with new ones.
I sold as and when I found them no longer interesting me and sometimes it took months to offload.
For the last several years I am much more in control where buying on impulse is concerned.

My current small collection is mainly of multiple GS, JLC, GO and some individual pieces from IWC, Omega, Damasko, Tudor, Nomos, E.Junghans, etc.
Individual watches interest me not their brands as a whole.
2014 I'm targeting a ceramic or forged carbon sports watch provided the price is right..

hahaha..we all have moments of weakness esp if the SYT has a very attractive figure ;)
Besides it was a low end watch under RM5K so I let myself be persuaded knowing the damage wasn't going to be fatal... ;)

That MH was bought when I first started work decades ago…and Cartier was far from being affordable at that point in time.
Not born with a silver spoon….

Hi Tyler
The GS black dials are much deeper black and richer.
I've only seen a few really jet black dials from the Swiss and they are either lacquer or enamel and obviously very costly..

yea, been diving since 1988. Started with NAUI then SSI and TDI NOX specialist courses certified. Was thinking of going tri-mix but didn't as too few potential buddies..
Actually I use the dive watch for time only. Always relied on my Aladin dive computers instead…
The Polaris or even my other lesser valued dive watches i.e. MM600 SD Ltd, SBGA031, Pelagos, Damasko, etc are only for desk diving…. ;D
Love them too much….
Have slowed down considerably in diving last 2 yrs.
BTW regarding the recent 7 Japanese lady divers ? Nusa Penida was one of my fav spots for Mola Mola, whale shark and manta ray sightings….dangerous down currents and very cold

Good posting JOS,

I just started collecting not too long ago, and now I'm wondering if I would have to go through a phase of collecting some pieces that I'll eventually sell in the future.
At the rate that I'm going, It's about 1 watch a year... trying very hard to resist...

No matter how many times WIS who have trodden the path tell you, you'll still have to go through the hell and fire journey.
You can tell someone not to touch fire by explaining that they'll get burned. They need to at least feel the heat before they get it.

I noticed many threads of new enthusiasts asking for advice but despite good advice given by the more weathered WIS here, they still end up buying 'nice' watches but nothing special. There are tons of 'nice' watches otherwise the watch companies would have folded long ago. At the end of the day, you'll keep only those that speak to you and have a special quality or an X factor, different from what the other watches in your collection feels to you. It took me > 30 yrs and a disposal of not less than 20+ to 30 watches to roughly know what I want nowadays in a watch. Of course we can indulge in buying cheap watches that cost a few K knowing we only like the look and will end up selling or giving it away. But the major acquisitions are made after long considerable research and long held back desires.

In your case you've been on the narrow and straight path with several IWCs.. a very good choice though somewhat safe…..(and u know what they say abt Volvo drivers..  ;))
