Title: Guinand Factory Visit
Post by: terrenceterrence on August 22, 2016, 08:26:57 PM
Was really looking forward to visit the showroom ever since the relaunch of the brand.

Luck has it that I was in Frankfurt on a weekday. Seeing that u have a few hours off, down to Guinand I go.

Just one U Bahn stop away from the current Sinn factory at Hausener Weg.

Keeping it small and like any great restaurant, you do not need a big menu. Just concentrate on a few items and make it perfect.

That would be how I describe brands like Guinand and Nomos. Honest brands with very reasonable pricing.

The most famous model of the brand would be the Flying Officer of course.

The reissue is a beauty with a bi-compax manual wind 24 hour dial.

Now it's also made in a more traditional tri-compax layout with a 12 hour dial after request from customers.

Production of these 2 model would stop after their reserves of the manual wind 7760 runs out. ETA has phased out the production of this calibre.

A real handsome chronograph in very refined size unlike modern big-case-thick-spacers-tiny calibre watches of today.

For those who does not know the history of the brand, Guinand was the producer of Sinn watches when Helmut Sinn was still in charge of the latter.

Thus you'll see a lot of similarities between the 2 brands. But the similarities stops at the outlook.

While Helmut Sinn; a pilot, makes watches that he himself would use with no fuss, Lothar Schmidt; an engineer focus more on the materials. Thus you can see the diverging path of both brands.

I would say the finishing of the calibre on a Guinand is more "polished" than a Sinn.

While Sinn makes tough watches for "tough men" Guinand makes watches for the gentleman aviator and rally driver. Which incidentally is Helmut Sinn himself.

Slight customization can be arranged with a combination of dials, case and hands. Just drop send an email to Matthias; the person in charge.

The Guinand chronos wears better on my wrist compared to the same offerings from Sinn. This is because of the absent of Faraday anti magnetic cage in the Sinn models which makes it very thick and wears high.

According to Matthias Klüh, they practice a very transparent parts acquisition with all vendors are from within Germany. Thus the nationalistic print on their dials "Hergesttellt in Deutschland" which I find is very befitting.

The manual wind time only offerings is interesting. Said to be modified by Helmut Sinn.

Good sharing. Seems like most day indicators are in German language.
