Have no idea which filter to get.
The one i got when buying my camera was a generic non coated one which i think its just for protective purposes?
So explain to me about filters please, is there a "all condition" one where i can just put on and forget bout it?

From my limited knowledge:
I normally have a UV filter (which is a standard filter) on my lenses. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UV_filter
I'm been thinking of getting a Polarizing filter, though, since I like the effect in the daytime: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polarizing_filter_(photography)
I mainly use the filters (since I'm a rookie) for protection for than anything, so if anything goes wrong I just change the filter.

Ya, for general purpose like protecting the lenses, get a UV will do.. i usually get Hoya Pro or the other Jap's brand, can't remember but start with "M"...
Advise to get a good UV (a bit more expensive, around 200++ to 300++ depend on the diameter of your lens) to avoid step down or some gives yellowish "effect"... what you can do is take a white A4 paper and put the filter on top of the white paper...check if it's crystal clear, this way, you can spot the yellowish easier...

Too itchy so went out and got the filter during lunch today.
Ended up with the Pro 1d UV filter. Gonna put it to use tomorrow morning hehe.

I used to put in a uv filter just for protection but nowadays the chances of buying a fake filter is very high. Even batteries got lots of fakes. It's just not worth the trouble. Even if the filter is genuine, I don't like the idea of covering an expensive piece of glass with another piece of glass which might change the properties of the lens.
Unless there is a specific thing I want to accomplish with a particular filter, I've done away with using a filter just for protection sake. For that, I rather use a lens hood.
It's just a personal preference and there's nothing wrong if you choose to use one.

I can understand that. My cousin who I'd a freelance photographer does the same thing. I don't use a filter for my cheap 50mm f1.8 lens too. Though I still feel more at ease with a filter, lol

LOL after having said all that, I just placed an order for some B+W filters from Germany. One polarizer and one UV..... :HammerHead:
I thought what the heck, Im already shipping something so might as well buy the filters and tumpang. :laugh:

I have tried nikon nature filter, quite happy with the result.
You can also consider hoya filter.
