Seiko Museum in Tokyo (Pic overload!!!)
« on: October 04, 2013, 08:50:13 AM »
Finally came around to arrange the pics and upload.

Was in Tokyo last month and through another forum i have meet a friend which we have chatted for quite some time now.

It's strange how forums and common interest brings people together.
We might not know each other, but we know each others wrist and also there is a common bond.

I meet a Purist forum member Ken which graciously offered to arrange a English speaking tour of the Seiko museum for me and also offered to meet up and bring me there.

This was i think actually his 5th time visiting and bringing watch nuts like me to the museum and he still gladly does so.

Japanese hospitality at its best and great friendship indeed.

We meet at Asakusa station and took a taxi over to the museum.

Its located on a very normal street away from the tourist area or any main street.

When i was inside the person who was going to be my guide was Senior Manager Katsuhiro Kumagai san.
Many thanks for his time.

On to the pics, there are ALOT of them.
The sequence of pics are as how the tour progressed.

Started on how the company started.

Pic of the watches that was left after the building was burnt down.
Seiko actually replaced every single one of them to their dealers at no extra cost.

Some of the very first clocks made.

Some pics self explanatory.

Here you see first glimpse of Katsuhiro san as he demo a Seiko talking clock.
Its still produced today buy no stock in the museum store.  :'(

Animated clock.

Era specific displays.

The Marvel watches.

This HUGE display is used to show how a mechanical automatic movement works.

First high-beat  :o

For the diver fans  ;D

great write up and pics, must be a wonderful experience. i can see some evergreen designs (laurel and flieger)

best thing is the aren't many differences in terms of design of GS and KS.

i particularly love this chronograph ...

great write-up Peter..

Can you pm me Ken's contact. I know which forum he is from but I've been very inactive there for years and have never contacted him before. Am making a trip to Japan next several weeks.
Personal taste and preferences evolve over years, hopefully not 1 full circle otherwise it means we haven't learnt a single thing.

Hey Peter,

Great post!! I remember Dr. Wayne Lee posted something similar on his visit to the Seiko Museum many years back on SCWF and he was not as generous with the number of photos...

It's interesting to see the price of each watch stated at the bottom of its description card. I suspect these were the selling prices of the watches when they were in production. 35,000 Yen for the Cal.5718 chrono in 1964 must have been a fortune those days!!!

Yup very interesting to see the price in those days.
Show you how high end it was back then.

I have more pics coming!  ;D

Now its time for a special part of the museum.
A special exhibition.  ;D

THE highlight of the show.
Sorry no closer pics as the lighting was hard to snap a clear pic.
Best thing was, its still running !  :o

Now we move on to the MWF fav in recent months.

Jeng jeng jeng  :P

I always feel special when seeing these old original paperworks.

The VFA (Very Finely Adjusted)  :o

Time to see the legendary stuff that shock the Swiss watchmaking world!

Here is Katsuhiro san again, notice he has a stack of printouts he is holding.
As the tour goes on he is reading from it.
Many thanks for his effort.

The one that started the fall of the Swiss watch industry.

My fav sub brand from Seiko.

Another large mockup, this time a Spring Drive movement.

And of a chronograph.

Finally get to see a Galante.

I get to see a real spacewatch and one that actually went into space. :Dancing_banana:

Over to the future design department.

Digital display with motion sensor.

This design is use to evoke memories of when we were young and how we got our height measured.

This is super cute, used to teach children how to tell time.
Not for sale.

Now we move to the seriously old stuff. Non Seiko.
Seriously old  :P

This one actually still works!
Was given a demo.

We not come to the modern timing devices.

Whats this on his wrist?
More on that later.

This sorta concludes the tour, i think there is still at least 50% of the watches i didnt take pic off.

The front reception when you arrive.

Best museum gift shop evar  :Dancing_banana:

Pic with the great host.
The other person was actually a dude from SG that joined the tour late and came halfway.

This is what Katsuhiro san was wearing. Havent seen this model fully mechanical with PR indicator before.

Must have a group wrist shoot.
SG dude wearing a modified Seiko tuna. Me with my 081.
And my Japanese friend, yes thats an original 44GS !  :o

Normally i only see the PR indicator dial on Spring Drive GS, not a automatic one.
So this is new to me.

Also notice how the 72hr is at the top not at the bottom like one of the previous threads.

Well cant leave the shop without getting anything right?  :P

What is that in the display?
Is it something i have been targeting for some time now?

Hell yeah!

Great memory indeed.

Again many thanks to my friend in Japan who arranged this special English speaking guided tour for me.
And for spending time to accompany me there.

People go to Tokyo for Disneyland, i go there for watch museum.
Friends all say dahell? haha...

I would have visited Grand Seiko manufacture as well but didnt have time to make arrangement and by bullet train takes few hours to reach even!

Hope you guys enjoyed this post.
I vote it as most pic intensive thread besides the WRUW one.  :P

And last but not least, i leave you guys with this.

Thanks Peter,

Your post has given me a deep impression on Seiko watches. Now I see them in a different light and perfections.

Now where is that Seiko 5 of mine. Two of them are lying around somewhere.........

dc
I am almost a recovered watchaholic, but last checked shows only 70% recovered. How?

Great set of pics, Takashi. It is like giving many of us who have yet to visit the museum a mini tour. Just running through the photos give a great historical perspective and evolution of Seiko from making clocks in the beginning to wristwatches today. And goes to show how much depth (not just breadth of products) of expertise Seiko has.

Ken has one of those VFA which is priceless.
Knowledge speaks, but wisdom listens.

Yes he has, but he brought out the original 44GS that day.
Would have loved to touch and feel the VFA.

I could have easily spent another 1hr at the museum but as Ken was there 4 times before i figured dont wanna take up too much of his time.
