Wantan Mee in Klang Valley
« on: April 24, 2013, 07:12:31 AM »
When I was Vietnam, my colleague there says its hard to get good traditional wantan Mee in Msia nowadays!
He said he can't even find it in alor setar! That's y he enjoy noodle in Vietnam very much

Well.... He might b right ... He is been away for too many yrs... N so use to compare Msia noodle with Vietnam noodle... N taste preference also change after staying there so long...

I wasnt sure bout alor setar, not familiar! but in Klang valley, a place still Cantonese speaking dominating... Now definitely hv alot of wantan Mee stalls, because wantan Mee recipe was brought From Guang dong! So many Cantonese here!

What is good wantan Mee? Anyway, I may hv my way of assessing how good a wantan Mee. so Don't scold me if u find the stall I mentioned here is not good! But for sure, I don't get pay for what I said so no commercial influence for sure!

I love this Hang Gei beside the busy jln loke yew, I just had it this morning b4 I go to office!
The noodle is chewy rather crunchy mixed with dark soy sauce... Yes, typical central peninsular Msia version, black! Tasty!
Y i keep coming back to this restaurant? Cant be just the noodle Right? yeah... they maintain their standard for dunno how many ten yrs... U wont find Vege is over cook here, which many stalls overlook this! Clear traditional soup, bone boiled with 'left mouth' fish with lots of spring onion n white pepper powder when serve! guess what? they serve 6 pieces of wantan, oh yes, SIX !!! No fancy big prawn in it, just pork mix with again 'left mouth fish powder'! u may think its simple, but yet to maintain the balance of taste, not too salty, not too much of pepper n taste not dominated by left mouth fish powder... No smelly pork... It's kungfu!
They also serve big portion of char Siew if u order char Siew wantan Mee! Yes, big portion! Well grilled, not really perfect char Siew to current standard, but still a very gd one, depend on luck, u may get a well balance fat part ... Yum!
Ps- their vinegared green chilly also good, never too sweet or sour, seed normally no longer attached n replaced daily, crunchy as its shd!

Last week I did went to restaurant FEN GEI, along jln sg besi, slight opposite mah sing hq office!
Another super old shops in KL city. Their noodle still bamboo pressed... Crunchy! Very traditional way... They do serve pork knuckle, beef, mushroom chicken feet... Great noodle!
If u r there, their fried noodle is still very very traditionally good! The Wok Hei is so so strong! Believe me! Whether is Bak yin yong or the fried dried beef hor fun!!!

I hv many frens like the Goon Gei petaling street! Oh yes, they serve good noodle, they mix alot of char Siew sauce into the noodle, SWEET! Not my favourite but they do deserve to b gd traditional wantan Mee....

Last month when I was at PJ, wanted to eat at the ss2 restaurant, the fat boy that serve good char Siew! But my Fren led me to another restaurant in sea park.... Yes! Super hard home made noodle with great char Siew! Can't remember the name, later I will post the location link when I free...

Another wantan Mee I go often is the one in Tmn segar, with the world no 1 spicy noodle as their signature! I beliefed their boss travel a lot n know what makes a gd restaurant! Gd environment, clean n gd service! Back to wantan Mee, they serve gd crunchy noodle, great char siew! U can also top $ for prawn wantan... Everything is good actually n good portion. Only question in my mine is y minced pork is serve, despite we'll braised, but I wonder why!

I will add more when I free

Share me UR favourite!

I think you meant Fun Kee. Old shop, no air-con, most of the customers are car repair shop mechanics. One of my favourites!!!!     I brought my Mat Salleh Aussie client to that shop for lunch one day. On his second visit, he bugged me to bring him there again for lunch though I had reserved a table in a nice Japanese restaurant at Mid-Valley Gardens. His favourite (and mine sometimes) is the salted fish fried rice!!!!   ;D

Hi Chrisyen...I am from Penang...wantan mee over here are so-so only....It has been awhile, but if i am not mistaken, there is
one restaurant "Hong Kong wan tan mee" at Sg Wang Plaza which serve wan tan mee with added ingredient, the noodle also tasted different...wonder if it is still there ?

IMHO. HK style wan tan mee is nothing compared to Pg local mee. There are a plenty stalls here in Pg ...like the one at genting, green lane.

There is a good one at USJ15, just at my junction. You have to come early. After 11am...sold out.

I am almost a recovered watchaholic, but last checked shows only 70% recovered. How?

No doubts what Chris has recommended are a few good wan tan mee places, , I've tried them all personally.

Just 200m down from Fun Kee along Sungai Besi highway towards Seremban direction, another nice wantan mee store, which is car repair shop in day, turn wantan mee place at night. It serves good wantan mee (at least few years ago, not sure about it now), easily 1 of the best around Klang Valley.

Another good place for bamboo pressed wantan mee is not too far away, at Nippy Noodles, Kuchai Lama.

Pete is right, the wantan Mee near car accessory shop targeting night cat
Not really bad... But above average... But not attractive to my tastebud

The kuchai lama one is hard selling its bamboo press noodle by showing their boss making noodle with see through glass at the front of the shop....
Yeah, thin crunchy noodle especially u go for dry version... However, poor char Siew n gd wantan skin...

The famous Ming Kei char Siew also open a wantan noodle at the shop behind this bamboo press one... Taste once... Not much I remember, so this tell....

The sudden popular of pontian wantan Mee 2 yrs ago also cant sustain long, died off since last yr
Any good one left?
