Ho Chi Minh - jln jln cari makan
« on: April 03, 2013, 10:44:17 AM »
Vietnam is a place for noodle... the PHO especially...
my second trip within few mths, finally get some times to makan makan this round ! lst times trying all the local restaurant... cause travel with big group of consultants

first lunch

seems just another bowl of noodle soup in vietnam...
it is not....

a close up on the soup noodle....

cant see... ok ok... i ordered the dried / fried version of glass noodle as well

yeah... a crab noodle... heavenly good! you wont find this in Malaysia, even some 1 selling this, i doubt you will get the amount of crab meat and the 'yellow'

they are popular with reasons... everything is well prepared... they used 2 type of crabs, 1st rich in 'yellow' 2nd for their meat

one thing i never have chance to try last trip is this... beside famous for the pho, vietnam is actually also famous for the french food... i chosen an old french restaurant near the city center....

in french restaurant, you must first try their
onion soup

the flame fired / baked cheese on top is thick and real great stuff
the soul of the soup is the fried onion.... i never like fried onion in soup in malaysia, i gonna say i love this.... alot!

main course, a pan grilled red snapper... nothing much to shout, but great presentation, fresh fish, good taste....

just to share a lovely decorated boutique hotel....

day 2 breakfast, i went for this famous fish noodle, it serve with thick yellow noodle

you gonna love the sweeeeeet soup, crunchy texture of the fresh just cook super thin fish....
and the hard chewy local made noodle... malaysia bamboo pressed noodle also not so hard...

its crowded and long q in the morning... oh i missed the pie, my colleague forgot to order that for me!

after a long meeting, while waiting to go lunch, i survey the local fruit....

the original dragon fruit.... i was told malaysia dragon fruit already very much different from this homeland
i forgot to shoot the big avocado, its huge.... creamy!

lunch, my boss favorite

beefball hor fun...
not my favorite... the beefball is crunchy but not much flavor to my liking... but all the hor fun is always good in vietnam

while waiting for a long late afternoon meeting, my appetite is big, so heavy afternoon tea with this in a high end restaurant

beef hor fun.... great soup! no complaint... just little pricey of course in such environment

and spring roll

its hard, must be prepared long ago before serving....

dinner
a hakka restaurant... famous for their

salted chicken... malaysia chicken is too fat, i love this skinny chicken, chewy and sweet, you wont need the pepper and salt

u r right, yong tau fu, hakka restaurant mah... regret ordered this.... malaysia, mum cooked better!
mayb i shd open a yong taufu restaurant in SAIGON

last dish, kailan fried with beef
dunno how they marinated the beef, so tender... well match with the just cook crunchy kailan stem.... hong kong kailan to be specific! i wont get bore with this even eat everyday ! simple preparation, but the timing of getting the beef and kailan cook must be perfect!

i actually put on 2kg ++ for this 3 days short trip.... too much pho? lol.... i never take supper in malaysia
but when ppl offered to bring me to try the local favorite, i cant resist...
sea food, vietnam street style

something i wont feel like ordering....

but my colleague ordered it.... i love malaysia way of preparing this, also in laksa, i love the guang zhou grill big cockles, japanese sashimi... errr... but not this, it look not well clean on the spot..... the result proven, we never finish this, its over cook as well, but lucky it is well cook.... or else....

nvm, we still have this

the chili paste fried crab ...

this big snail is crunchy n sweet, i believe they added sugar to grill it... yummy

n my favorite,

yeah, been the world best soup in many country, taiwanese,  chinese, italian... we all love thick shell clam soup... sweet!
this is another version - it is boil with salt,  lemon glass and chili
u will stun with ur first spoon ! it is so strong ! i mean the taste is strong !!! die die must try... i will definitely go for this next round....

next round must come earlier... nearly no more taxi to send me home

day 3 breakfast
suppose to go for the french bread wrap the grilled duck or pork.... but 1 restaurant closed another too far...
so back to this

many tourist and local also love this beef noodle.... one of the best in town

yeah, its the way they keep the standard that keep the repeating customer...
great pho, great soup, great beef...

great spring roll served as well.... much better than those in wet market and high end restaurant

my colleague specially love this, it looks clean to me.... i never like fried food, especially those i can see fried with recycle dirty oil....

the secret of the beef soup, beside the vege and pineapple added to boil the beef bone....
its this

this make the soup light and appetizing
of course some may like to add this

and this

to add some extra flavor....

with some request, i went to buy the lotus seed

in the wet market after my breakfast

and walk along the street

found alot of antique shop selling all kind of watches and clock....
all stated world war watches....
i found most of it redial.... likely the cheap US made watches (hamilton/bulova/etc) redialed to rolex, omega, patek....
some the price is just too good to be true....

i rather spend time looking at this highly skilful ppl making this

before i go to air port, i still miss the bread i intended to eat earlier... settle with this lovely bread shop...

as compare to malaysia, vietnam actually learn their bread making recipe from french... so u will find it different and actually better than malaysia....

yum yum....

while waiting to board, i go for this.... bcoz i hate mas food to vietnam...

chicken hor fun soup.... surprisingly good! but triple the price compare to street

good bye saigon

Precisely! Starving now.

The model ships looked stunning!! Any idea how much it cost?

No wonder they say that Vietnam is the next boom country. I am in the oil & gas industry and the activities have certainly picked up over the last 3 years or so, although the big oil guys (and the service guys) have been there at least the last 10 years.

Vietnam boom 10 yrs ago
Too fast too explosive
Lost control
Banking system not mature
Ppl in power n rich never honest in business

Hence they are in crisis now
Non of Msia property developer doing well there
All loosing ...not sure bout other industries

Property price drop
Share drop
Only retail is still doing ok due to huge middle income group as consumer

Now we shd eye
Cambodia n Myanmar

I never like hor fun soup here
So no worry... V hv wantan Mee , laksa, Asam laksa, Mee rebus, Hakka man, char Kurt Teo......
