Ball Trainmaster Celsius (Limited Edition)
« on: November 15, 2012, 06:43:52 PM »
Hi all,
After so long (about 3 weeks), finally I can have some time to write a review on my latest purchase, the Ball Trainmaster Celcius.
Before I begin, would like to first appologize if this review may sound noobish, this is my first "serious" watch after all, apart from the entry level Tissot.

Ball Trainmaster Celsius

First of all, the basic specs of the watch :
41mm diameter, height 12.6mm
Shock resistance of 5000Gs
50m water resistance

Well to start off, the above pictures are the watch in the box. The package comes in a very simple green box (not wood), well, TOO simple if you ask me...

The watch has a very neat and clean face (just nice, not TOO simple for me), but I especially love the dials and the hands (especially the seconds). The dials have a "3D" feeling, where they had actually paste cuttings of stainless steel as the numbers onto the face.
Just like any other watches, the crystal is an Anti-reflective convex sapphire crystal.

The crown is an Screwed-in crown and it comes patented with the Ball logo, the "RR". Just loves the design of it, classy.

Nothing much to talk about the case, made of polished stainless steel, however, there is a small part (at the lug) where the stainless steel is actually brushed. Nice combination and blends nicely.

The case back is made of Sapphire crystal with silk-screen printed portrait of Anders Celsius. Some may like it, some may not, I personally prefer if I could directly see the movements. The portrait actually slightly blocks the sight.  :Blue:

This Ball has 15 micro gas tubes on hour, minute, second hands and dial. Nice, clean and simple. Really easy to read at night (sorry, didn't capture new pictures for the lume).

This watch comes with a Black crocodile leather strap with standard buckle (tang buckle), with measurement of 20mm. I personally did not like the tang buckle, therefore, invested abit more and got my self an Ball deployment clasp with the patented "RR" logo. Loving it!

And well, that's for the design of the watch. Now for the movement and the feature of the watch.

As the name of the watch says, the watch actually measures the ROOM temperature (some people asked if it measures the body temperature, but NO!  :Laughing_on_floor:). According to Ball, the accuracy is 97%, but it is affected by the body temperature if you actually wear it. To measure a accurate temperature, you have to take off the watch for 10 minutes before reading the measurement again. Well, yes, I tried, body temperature really affects the measurement. Usually, I will minus 4 to 5 degree to get a room temperature reading (not very accurate though). Well, the temperature feature is just an addition or special feature, may not be of VERY useful, but it sure is a fun feature to have (special). Another special feature is that this watch has the Cold temperature endurance to -40° (don't think all Ball watches has this feature).

This Ball is using the Ball 9018 movement, with base ETA 2892-A2 and addition of temperature measurement feature. I tried wikipedia this movement, and.. "The 2892.A2 is regarded by many horologists as being in the same 'quality' range (accuracy and reliability) as the in-house produced Rolex movements". Cant agree more! Accuracy at the beggining is about +6 secs a day, but now, when it "cools" down, its +2 secs on average per day!!

As a conclusion to my review, I would say this is a really nice watch, and I have total NO REGRETS over this piece...
Proud to be one of the 310 people to own this watch!!

Well, thanks for reading this noob's watch review, have alot more to learn.
Thanks again!

Good review. Well done.

For mechanical watches, very few have such complications such as a thermometer. Very interested to learn more about this watch. Wonder if Ball will try to add a barometer in a future model?

Thanks alot...
So far, I think Tissot and Ball has the temperature measurement feature, not sure any other brands has it...
A barometer? that would sound very interesting.. but still, I wonder... when can I use the feature?  :P

Haha, you are absolutely right. If you need such capabilities, a Casio Protrek would be a better choice!

Ball said it is actually 97% accurate... However, do keep in mind that body temperature will affect the readings..

I have tested it with a digital thermometer before, its pretty accurate... (I took off the watch and for about 10mins and then I take the reading)
