Zenith Aircraft Pilot's Watch Type 20
« on: February 04, 2012, 06:53:36 AM »
Oh my, when Mr.Dufour said that 2012 will be the year for Zenith Pilot Watches... I was excited as hell.
I pretty much liked the El Primero Pilot... the entry level watch for Zenith with an El Primero Movement.

Nice clean lines, bi compax chrono, Case size of 42mm. Still acceptable for me.
And when Zenith decided to concentrate on the Pilot Line this year... it has to get my blood racing and my wallet crying.

But then... this was announced...
The Zenith Aircraft Pilot's Watch Type 20.
Even the name is already a mouthful.
The watch? Here it is...

I was like  ??? ??? ???
Not an El Primero... most probably an Elite movement.
Hours, Minutes, small seconds at 9, Power reserve at 3.... and No Date...
Titanium case sized at..... wait for it..... 57.5mm!!!
Holy mother of god... that is freakin HUGE!!! Looking at the HUGE crown... size could be over 60mm including crown.

Did a little digging and this is where this watch got it's roots from...

I am... disappointed....
Hopefully there are more models being announced later.
Something that will tickle my fancy.

While it is an interesting looking watch, I, like you hanz079, am wondering isn't it a tad too big.

Two pictures on Zenith's Facebook page.
Mr.Dufour wearing it...
Farking Huge!!!

And one more side by side with someone wearing the Stratos...
Now at 45.5mm... the Stratos now looks small next to the Pilot Type 20.

Nah....i think i will pass on that one.
Even maybe at 47mm it will look too large on 80% of us here.

Curious to see what sort of movement it uses though.

Tacky to put "special" on the dial.

I will definitely not pay a Zenith price for a watch that looks like a cheap USSR era watch and reminds everyone of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 and the Battle of Stalingrad. In no time, I am sure this watch will have a nickname like Josef Stalin, Yuri Gagarin, Marshall Zhukov....etc.  :Blue:

Zenith used to make really nice (although a bit conservative looking) "pilot-style" watches before the mid-2000s. You could buy one with teh El-primero movement (without moonphase) for about RM 6,900 in 2001 from Sincere at KLCC. Then Zenith acquired a playboy looking CEO who turned the brand into a halloween fashion house. When this new CEO came along I thought it finally found its footing again but I guess I was wrong. If zenith wants to take on IWC's Big Pilot, it should at least come up with a better design instead of just stretching the diameter (like...OK those ?&^&@$$# americans have a 1 megaton H-Bomb, let's make a 10 megaton H-bomb!! and blow up the north pole)
