BMW 320d M Sport vs Merc C250 CGI
« on: January 28, 2012, 04:46:40 PM »
Put a deposit on 320d, but saw an opportunity for C250.

Just need to check on the +ve & -ve points between these two models?

Tendency towards 320d due to:
1. Green diesel engine
2. Less expensive
3. 100k km free maintenance
4. 5 years 0% interest financing
5. BMW White Card

Feedbacks are welcomed...

1. Diesel chatter at idle
2. Sharing pumps with lorries at the petrol station
3. Unsightly exhaust fume when you floor it
4. Neighbour thinks petrol version costs more  ;D

Yes, 320i cost lesser but also less HP and torque.

The 320d is an excellent choice, however u cant compare it with a 250 CGI, both uses different fuels. Diesels are great for fuel economy and gives u excellent mileage. The deal from bmw sounds very good, however u would also need to note that it's the outgoing e90 model. The replacement model will be coming out this year amd it would be wise to wait for that.

Overall, the 320d has a great engine but the diesel clatter does gets on ones nerves after a while. Then there's the smell of the fumes that come out the exhaust, it's not a good thing to smell like the one tonne lorry that's idling next to u at a set of lights or when u pull into your driveway.

The future still says diesel but i'd skip it until we get at least some euro4 diesel in our pumps. That really makes a diffence in terms of emissions and the smell of the fumes.

I have seen the new model design (external) and I think it looks a bit off.

Orange vs apple, but, grab Mercedes Benz, unless you are still a boy racer at heart. Current diesel fuel quality in MY is not in favour of the 320d.
I initially dislike the external appeal of the E350 CGI, but, become very fond of driving it now. its just oozes class! S Class is too bulky for city manoeuvre & personal driving pleasure; great for motorway cruising.

I have seen the new model design (external) and I think it looks a bit off.

that's quite normal with new models, we always get the feeling that the older one looks better... until you see more and more on the road, the F30 will start to grow on you. I've tested the E90 320d and I must say, the torque is tremendous. It comes in as low as 1,700rpm and when the roads are wet, it gets a little snaky if you floor the accelerator too hard. The interior needs a little bit of work, the aluminum doesn't look as classy as it should for the price that you pay. The diesel engine, although as much torque and power it produces, does seem to run out of breath when you take it for a cruise along the highway.

With that said, it would seem that you are pretty much decided that you do not mind the current E90, I guess it would be possible that you may purchase it as it comes with the warranty and the white card. If you are caught in between deals, see if the sales person can work out one better for you. Especially if you are buying a merc or a bimmer, they usually get quite competitive.

I am more a merc guy....but the bmw you putting up the deposit is a damn good car especially the engine..diesel is the best ...
to re quote omnipotent

1.the diesel engine by BMW is very much refined, the chattering is negligable
2. On public holiday on long trip, and I would say most pump in city center in any days, it is a bliss to pump diesel....not may lorries around, short que...i have great refueling experience with my boss Range Rover Diesel ...
3. No comment
4. What matter is that you will have great drive, great acceleration and top power at significantly low rpm.... city drive at ease....

another additional points for BMW

Somehow, you can find more "unofficial" mechanic with great talent , than merc....once you run out your warranty and need to save up for next buy, you can have low cost maintenance with unofficial workshop, with great ease of mind....more mechanic are good with BMW than Merc....

Ok, perhaps my opinion is not entirely correct...Despite being a petrol head, i drive a proton....hahahah....but i have great experience borrowing the BMW and Merc...so perhaps I am half glass full.....

The current Euro2 diesel sold here does a great disservice to high end diesel powered car. With euro4, the diesel wins hands down.

Until there is some light at the end of the tunnel with regards to the types of diesel sold in Malaysia - safest bet is to go for the CGI.

This is just my own personal view

Why don't you wait for the new F30 320i and 328i
Both comes with brand new 2.0 turbo engines and 8 speed gearbox

Don't buy a car when it's life cycle has already ended

Chasing after new technology & innovation is a never ending story, unless I am very deep pocket, I won't.
I would rather look at German marque that is practical, reliable, relatively low maintainance & depreciation, but, more importantly, with potential to be a future classic. I will go for the Benz

The F30 is already selling in Europe. It will be here  latest by Q3.
The C class is a great car, My bro has a E200 cgi for about two years now, and it's quite reliable
If you don't mind, you can also get a Recond E200 for the price of a C250.

But I would advise you to atleast wait a couple of months for the new 3 and facelifted Audi A4
Before making your decision.

I'm an Audi guy... asked in this case i would go for the BMW mainly cause the design.. Merc a lill boring, BMW looks agressive.
Anyone owning either car will have a great time if they push the pedal  :)

Tested both cars and the BMW 320d wins hand down in terms of handling, steering precision and overall driver's satisfaction

I was in your situation early last year almost put my money on the bimmer until my wife and kids sat at the back of 320d during one of the test drives. The suspension of the car is so hard that it will please the driver but no the passengers  one of my kids almost vomit after the test drive

I agree with you that Merc does not have good package as compare to BMW i.e zero interest, 5 year mtce free etc. My case was even harder as Passat CC and Audi A4 were also in my shortlist.

It all depends on what you want. If you really want a performance car, best advice is to go for E92 335, 3 liter twon turbo with 301 bhp and 400 Nm. Zero to 100 in a mere 5.5s. Its a two door coupe and a recond ( from UK/Japan ) 2007, can be bought just around the price of 320d depending on the accessories. This car can take anything on Malaysian road except the Supercars

For my case, I did not get any of those as I was transferred to Sarawak last year. Bought myself a nice bungalow in Bangi instead

The 320d's 380Nm torque is intoxicating!
Add the Powerkit and it churns 420Nm!

The absolute beauty of turbo diesels, only thing is it sounds like a lorry when idling on the outside. Don't think that would bother you much as you probably can't hear that on the inside... :D
