« on: August 04, 2009, 03:00:56 PM »
Dear Forumers,

Am helping out a friend here, he's got a budget of about RM4k, and wondering what watch to get.
Appreciate if you can share some info or watch brand which i can feedback to him....

I can think of a few:-

1) Oris
2) Fortis
3) Glycine

I would look @ Fortis,Glycine then Oris in that order. Personally, Fortis are solid watches but not popular as like Oris. Oris been heavily advertised. Not a bad thing. You might be able to sell easier than Fortis when u decide to let go someday.

A nice basic brand new sinn (656) with strap takes less than rm4k.

Others, as the sifu had suggested as above.

Good luck.

I am almost a recovered watchaholic, but last checked shows only 70% recovered. How?

i never like full lume dial... but this one seems looking good.... i like the dc 67... but only less than 100 made... used one price escalating...
saw one sold more than rm10k....

so da 37 is a very well build watch... and can be found once a while online....
new around usd1k
worth every single cent if u like the design....
ice hardened case, soft iron inside, best finished case, eta 2836 movement.... good water resistant....

Didn't know Mido can be had for less than 2k. Must check that out.

Nobody mentioned Tag Heuer? If it's your friend's first "luxury" watch, he might want to consider an easily recognisable brand. Off hand in that price range, I would recommend the new F1 Calibre S. Beautiful watch. Love their new F1 range (I bought the white / full lume dial the first time I saw it in the shop)

Would also recommend Oris. Their watches are classy. I quite like their Frank Sinatra range. Discontinued but can still find them in shops.

The Tag looks interesting. I wonder how the electro mechanical works?

This reminds of Citizen 2100, http://www.princetonwatches.com/shop/AV0031-59A.asp Its chronograph second hand sweeps like a mechanical watch but it is a quartz that runs on solar.

You have piqued my curiousity on the citizen. Will be looking out for it in the shops.

I have seen the Calibre S. It's battery operated so it's like a "quartz". The second hands tick like a quartz watch. Also interestingly, the minute has no gradual movement. It "ticks" every 1/2 minute. Or my eyes maybe playing tricks.

To see how the the movement works:

and click on the "Calibre S interactive 3D" link.

Tag was my first so called 'luxury' watch. Soon after, i was looking at Rolex which i think was among the best.It still is, as its has many followers. Its is consider valuable ( at least when you want to trade in). Very popular  among businessman, businesswoman not to mention the "elite" society who is looking to show off their new "toys". No offence Rolex fans. Its just my personal view.

But now, i am looking for individual watch movements, its craftmanship and the history behind the making of a successful watch. Craftmanship is so important as it shows the maker passions in a watch. A valuable watch must has its own movements not borrowed as in the case of Rolex. JLC has its own movement, so is Vercheron Constantine. But they are too costly to own...

I have checked the TAG demo you mentioned. The watch operates like a typical quartz watch. If you can check out citizen 2100. It is totally different from what u would have expected from a quartz watch as far as the chronograph function concerns.
