Yes agreed, but very much over shadowed by it's brother the Sub.

Yes agreed, but very much over shadowed by it's brother the Sub.

I think that's inevitable - the Sub has been the icon for Rolex for long, and it's gonna take some herculean effort to knock it off its perch. But the GMT-Master can definitely hold its own against any challenge, in an underrated manner of sort.

Let me just add (taken from the just acquired Vintage Rolex Sports Models ;))

"In 1953, Rolex was asked by Pan Am to create a watch for airlines crews that could display the time in the home country as well as the present location. The Submariner was adapted by adding an extra hour hand and a date feature, and named the GMT-Master. This watch was an instant commercial success for Rolex, and over forty years later it is still a major seller."

Hmmm ... does that mean I can say that I'm now wearing a Sub with an extra hand? :Startled:

Cute! :Laughing_on_floor:

You mean ... like this?

Look at this bezel insert. It was manufactured of transparent acrylic which had the 24 hour markings printed on its underside

Gorgeous!

When the GMT-Master was launched in 1954, Pan American Airlines, who was the original party that approached Rolex to develop a watch which could simultaneously display the exact time in two different time zones, immediately adopted it. In order to differentiate between watches intended for its crew and for ground staff, a special order with white dials was manufactured for ground staff. Probably fewer than 200 of these white dial watches were made, and they are a rare find today.

Yeah, the exec of the company were unhappy that the pilots got the GMT Master. So they 'hijack' a batch of watches meant for the pilots. The head honcho at Pan Am found out and ordered the execs to give the watches back. However he realised that the 'execs' also contributed to the company, so a batch of white dial GMt Master were made. so the story goes.....

Correct - it's Che Guevara. Legend has it that after he was executed, the CIA agent present at the scene stole the GMT.

I was made to understand that Castro also wore a GMT-Master during his successful coup revolution, but I'm not so sure (some say it's a Submariner).

But I do know that he sometimes wore two Rolexes at a time (well that might be the motivation for his good friend Maradona to act the same). ;D

Castro wears a Sub and a DJ.

One for Cuban time the other for Soviet time.

Maybe because his good friend Che beat him to the GMT and all he got was a sub  :Laughing_on_floor:
