Importing watch from Japan
« on: August 26, 2022, 12:04:55 PM »
Hi,

Just wanting to confirm that the cost of importing a new watch from Japan is 5% + processing fee.  Saw that there could be both SST and a duty, so double checking.

Thanks

Also, does the answer change if the item is second hand?

Thanks

Doesn't matter where you're buying from, as long as the invoice declaration is wristwatch or timepiece, the import tariff is 0%. But you'll have to pay 5% SST and rm50 clearing / processing fee to poslaju. DHL is same, rm50 fee.
If you go to Pos Malaysia Int'l hub to clear yourself, no need to pay rm50 fee. But I recommend to pay it. Completely worth the hassle.
Just got my GS from rakuten Japan. Same process.

So far my experience with watches is just having to pay an additional 5% of price of goods + shipping. Jave not heard of any new rates or taxes yet tho.

5% based on the declared Yen value of the watch (this exchange rate was more favorable than what my credit card charged me)
Then +rm50 UPS handling fee
Thing is customs was slow so I still haven’t paid them yet coz they haven’t sent me the invoice

I've got a few new watches coming from Switzerland, Japan and France. Will update this thread if there's any deviation from the standard 5% SST + courier handling fees, although I don't anticipate any change

I always get taxed 5% on the declared value + processing fees. Can’t really escape if you’re importing from overseas.

Based on my 3 watch acquisition at past, there were taxed 5% (of ur declared value if lucky, or based on custom real value) + processing fees.

The custom is likely open the parcel, when the watch is send with box. They will do a quick internet search and find out the watch value .... In any case if you under report the parcel value, the custom will upscale the value to market price and tax you 5% based on the new value. Any dispute of value, you are required to provide the payment evidence / purchase receipt to custom / Fedex / DHL. Same principal applied to any watches send to oversea for Return & Repair.

For those kena 5% of declared value, you are the lucky one...

Were there any deviation? or all 5%?

All 5%,

but the custom will check ur package sometimes to verify the value, if they feel the merchant under report the watch value, they will add the value and you need to pay the 5% based on the new value (by custom).

IF you have a choice in choosing the shipping partner, opt for DHL instead. They've been very good to me. No to UPS. They suck big time. Hope it helps.

Bought a watch from Japan online during covid lockdown, if I remember correctly you need to pay the tax to DHL. Since DHL pay it for you to the custom. I might be wrong, that was my first purchase from oversea.
