BASIC WATCH SERVICING WORKSHOP
« on: December 14, 2010, 11:06:29 AM »
Guys

I am looking into organizing a small workshop, on basic thing about watch servicing....I am looking into getting a sifu to teach the basic anatomy of watches movement, how to dismantle and put back your movement , the right tool , basic servicing step, etc etc....

This will all depend on how much potential attendee i could get through my pole...therefore you can either add your name here....or log on to my blog and participate in my poll...

i dont have anything solid yet like syllabus of the workshop, but will plan properly in due time...again provided there are enough interest from the members...

Let me know ya... :)

For the benefit of the members i shall ask a few questions.

1- How long is the workshop going to be? few hrs? 1day or more?
2- Will tools be provided or do we need to bring our own?
3- Will spare movt be provided for training and practice?

It'd be nice to know the cost of attending such a class too, though of course the quantity of people would help. And how "entry level" are we talking about? Since you have total newbie here (me) that doesn't know anything about watches.

Utter honestly...at the moment, what we have in mind still preliminary ideas...I need to know potentially who would like to attend and number of people...too little then may not worth pursuing the idea, too many that perhaps need to have more than one session...i think 10 pupils at one season is ideal....no point of having big classroom...we need to pay attention to what we could learn...

However the basic idea would be, the class would be for super junior who know nothing...if you are an expert you are still welcome to join if you like to...at the moment , we been thinking to help to buy tools for attendee if you dont have it, movement wise, we would advice you to get some basic watch but if you dont want to spent, you can share perhaps with what ever we have at the time... probably you have to take turn...

Looking to charge minimal fee to cover room rental, perhaps food and to pay the instructor...maybe around RM 50 not including tool but i havent do my math so price might differ...dont worry, it wont be profit oriented...it is just for fun learning things or two ...

haven't also finalize the syllabus , but the likelihood would be introduction to the anatomy of watches and movements, introduction to tools, technique to dismantle and put it back, basic servicing and troubleshooting...we know a few taiko (old timer ) that may be willing to be the instructor ( i havent even asked them so all this planning also depend on whether i could get those people to agree to share), but all that, still preliminary idea...the likelihood earliest it could happen would be two month from now...maybe longer....i dont know just quite yet...

therefore if you have interest, do let me know...if i have enough people showing interest i promise to work things out and ensure that it really happen...otherwise, may not worth for me to invest my time...

Around RM50 to learn about watches, do some simple stuff and meet new people sounds fine for me. Sunday morning is probably a good time for me, but I guess folks would prefer afternoon.

Might be an idea if you have old watches or something to dissect. I only have one main Seiko that I wear daily, and I'm not confident of opening that  :o

Cheers.
