Stowa Flieger or IWC MK XVI?
« on: December 23, 2016, 11:48:06 PM »
Hi guys,
Which one would you choose among the 2 mentioned above?i am asking as IF given the budget for an IWC of course thats an obvious choice. But being said so I understand both are using ETA movement hence IWC might be overpriced for this reason. Please share your thoughts on this.

who said if given budget should go IWC? If you have budget, you should go Rolex. (that will be the popular answer)

Joking aside, if you like IWC, go for it. If you want value, just go Stowa.

For me, i dont like the Mark XVI lack of 12 and 6, and dont like the big IWC logo. Much Prefer a Stowa No Logo No date.

Edit: and why the hack the need to tell people its automatic on the dial.

The only watch company that stay true to their Flieger origin is Laco, but that is another Story.

If the choice must be made between IWC and Stowa. Then I only will choose IWC.

Since they are both using ETA movements, and assuming budget is a non issue here, I vote IWC. Nothing against Stowa, however for pure looks, IWC bags it. Stowa would be the more toolish of the two. But the mark series from IWC is something else altogether. Having previously owned two pilot chrono from IWC, 3706 and 3717, I finally ended up with the mark 18 Le petit prince. The mark goes with anything, from the original santoni strap it came with, a black alligator, canvas or even NATO. It really is a good buy. Good luck with your choice...

XVI looks win? Value is indeed an issue here.

But I have to admit. I have handled IWC before. Those watch gave a different aura. Maybe because I know their price, or maybe because of the environment, or maybe because of the strap. It's a good buy.

Personally i prefer the XVIII

I prefer IWC. Top pick is mark XV, followed by mark XVI.
I think movement is just part of the package. I value the look, case design, finishing as much as, if not more than movement.
I once considered Laco and Stowa but ended with an IWC Mark XV, I just like its design better.
If budget permit, I will go for top dogs in their respective fields (Submariner for diver, calatrava for dress). In this regards, IWC pilot is, to me, the top dog in the pilot range.

+1 for stowa.

Cause I really can't stand IWC date placement on the new mark series. It's plain wrong for the price they are charging and shouldn't even be released with such an obvious 'flaw' in dial design IMHO

There are many reasons people feel good wearing a certain watch (brand):-

(1) the design/type ( I think you have decided on flieger /pilot type)

(2) use (eg time /date, complications , etc) (basically you choose a basic function watch to tell time)

(3) branding/ image (some people may not care about the brand /image associated with the brand )

(4) value (this is quite subjective as those who can afford luxury watches, value probably is their last concern.. cost a few hundred Ringgit orient bambino or Seiko 5 can do the same thing )

Maybe you can look at point no 3...

Stowa is a good watch like a VW

IWC is also a good watch like a Merz..

Whether you want a VW or Merz .. up to you .. but generally most people would prefer a merz , me included ..

No right or wrong here ...

Thanks for the feedback guys. I agree Laco makes very good pilot watches especially the Type B ones. But owned a type A with miyota movement and it wasnt up to a German watch standard so my bet is still on those with an ETA movement.
Fully agree, Stowa is discreet and will only pull the eyes of someone who knows pilot watches to have a second glance.
IWC is more brand premium, most people would know an IWC nowadays. All 3 companies carry a strong reputation of original German pilot watches that dates back to the early 1900s.

Quite true. To be fair. I started with Stowa because I can't afford a Zenith or IWC back then. Then when I have the ability, I fall back to the comfort zone and remain with Stowa.

Along the way, I learn about watches and continue to add on Stowa because that is my collection direction.

Non WIS laugh at my Stowa because they only know Rolex, Omega, IWC. Me, in the meanwhile laugh back at them because of their lack of knowledge.

Only then I realised, I have determination in me to spread the word about Stowa in Malaysia.

Its like a cult, a family thing. Apparently from my involment in Stowa forum, most of the Stowa customer act like a little brand ambassador.

To TS. have fun buying your watch. No right or wrong. I just choose to drive Honda.

Personally I would prefer IWC, Laco & Stowa (in this order) for pilot watch.
