Five Hands Longines Chronographs
« on: October 27, 2016, 11:32:05 AM »
These 5 hands Longines chronograph, in stainless waterproof case, are relatively less often seen and appeared to be only produced for a short period in the mid 40s, based on the tight production serial no. range that have been spotted to-date. The extra two hands are the centre 60-min register, in red, and the centre 60-sec register in blue steel.  The sub dial shows the regular time in seconds. A departure from the conventional chronograph design at the time, the 60-min red hand is continuous running, driven directly by the movement centre wheel post via friction coupling. This eliminated the conventional jumper spring setup and considerably simplified the chronograph mechanism.

What is interesting is Longines made both wrist and pocket versions of this with very similar dial/hand design layout.  I am not aware of any other maker produced such similar pair. The wrist version has a case size of about 37.5mm, considered uncharacteristically large in those days, and based on Longines calibre 12.68z (second-stop) with flyback. This was basically a time only 12.68z movement with the chronograph stop-second module mounted on top. This was considered a poor man 13zn some years ago but collector’s sentiment has since changed and is now much sought after.

The pocket version is a modified calibre 18.72 without the flyback function and, based on what have been spotted to date, appears to be even rarer than the wrist version.  Both versions use a single button for activation and reset of chronograph hands.

In contrast, the 12.68z found in smaller non-waterproof case, mostly gold filled, are more in abundance and also seem to be produced over a longer period.  The earlier ones have four hands, without the 60-min register.

It has always been my collecting dream to seek them out in pair and, glad to say, have been somewhat lucky to-date to find two!
