Rolex GMT Master II Ceramic BLNR
« on: March 17, 2015, 08:27:18 AM »
While every one waits with bated breath what is Rolex going to announce at this year's Basel Fair, let's take a look at the 2014 released Rolex GMT Master II Ceramic BLNR.
With the help of a good friend, I got this piece for my dad's birthday last year.

Compared with the old GMT Master II Ceramic LN, only 3 differences can be found here in the BLNR.
1. The Bezel is now bi-colour. Top half black for "night", bottom half blue for "day"
2. "GMT Master II" font on the dial is printed in white instead of green.
3. The 24 hour GMT hand is blue instead of green.

The transition between the 2 colours.

No difference to the case profile.
Same with the previous iteration.
Trip lock crown but only 100m water resistance. Good enough i guess.

Polished centre links on the bracelet.
Used to differentiate a GMT from a Submariner from afar? hehehe

Clasp with easy-link extension.
Only +-5mm for the extension but comes in handy.
Gridelock is still the best though.

Comfortable on the wrist as with any Rolex.
With 3 subtle differences, is it worth the premium over the regular GMTII Ceramic LN?
I would say yes.
Alot of people feel that the Rolex GMT series of watches HAVE to come with a bi-colour bezel...
I mean they can produce in any 2 colour combo and I still reckon they will sell... lol

Seeing my dad wearing it day in day out, I can say that the blue/black of the bezel does not "POP" like you see in the pictures.
Mostly just looks all black. Only in certain angles can you see the slight blue hue...
Even sitting across a dining table, it still looks all black at times.
Unless you take a guy's hand and place it in front you, or inspect a watch more closely ( be careful though, I heard it's rude)... from a distance, it just looks black.

All in all, I think this is a good buy. My dad seems to enjoy it alot so that makes it a very good buy.

It's heart warming to see a son giving something special to his father.

Society generally dictates a top down approach to gifting (especially watches @PP's advert etc).

I bet you felt all glowing inside when you give that gift. Well done. I salute you.

Sometimes we forget  their sacrifices and it is good to be reminded.

An admirable and deserving gift to your dad, Hanz! I'm sure he wears it with pride as this is a gift from his son.

  Well done!

Thanks guys.
I did not start a Rolex.
It was a gradual upgrade. hehehe
Yeah... he was happy with it.
After every watch I got him. He keeps saying enough.
But whenever I get him a new one, he will be like "ok"... lol

Awesome review! After seeing the watch in person I have to agree that most times the bezel just looks black..

And I too hope to buy my dad a Rolex one day....for now though I've successfully poisoned him to buy one of his own and we trade watches for the week on and off  :Laughing_on_floor:

good job! the last time i read you gave him a polar exp ii....great upgrade btw!

i was actually inspired by my dad's story about his datejust and tudor submariner during his hey-days which he sold due to hard times when i was very young...

i would love to buy him a rollie but he keeps telling me he's retired now and do not have grand occasions to wear them (he's also freaked out by stories of robbers chopping off hands, salespeople checking it out for authenticity, etc), i took his words that he didn't need one so bought 2 for myself  :Laughing_on_floor:

Don't ask... Just give... They will gladly accept.
That's what I did... hehehe

Tumpang this tread. If my dad is not into nice watch, do you think he will accept? He is just wearing a ciplak Casio RM100. I think his is 38mm and his wrist can strap a 41mm and looks nicer.

Gift from son? For sure without a doubt.

Concise review, very helpful.

Agree with other forummers that it's heartwarming to read such a story of gifting from a son to his father!

44mm is just too large. I think 41 or 42mm is perfect.

The blue part of the BLNR bezel turns into a  very dark blue almost black during sunset hours giving a nostalgic look to the entire watch. Love it!
