Long term review: Bell&Ross WW1 Argentium
« on: August 11, 2013, 06:17:23 PM »
This would be a first in MWF i guess, a long term report.
The reason for it is because of this special watch and its case warrants it.
Nothing a 1-2 week review can do.

The nice folks at Bell&Ross has loaned a WW1 Argentium watch to me to do a long term on the wrist report.  ;D
I will be wearing this watch very frequently over the coming 2 months.

It will accompany me on a trip overseas as well.

The aim of this review is to off course test all aspects of the watch and focus on how the case patina compared to bronze.

If there is any gtg over this 2 months or any yam cha session i will gladly bring it out for show and tell.

First a teaser, let me come back to this later tonight.

That's a simply beautiful watch... what's Argentium? A new type of metal used in making cases?

Argentium is basically a trademarked Silver compound

Below are from the press release.

Vintage WW1 Argentium:

Bell & Ross has always been fascinated with aeronautical instrumentation and the plane as an object.  This inspiration has nurtured the development of collections based on two ideas:  the first, aeronautical instrumentation, specifically that of the instrument panel, in its AVIATION Collection; the second, the evocation of key eras in the history of aviation through the development of pilot watches in the VINTAGE Collection.
As part of the latter, the Vintage WW1 ARGENTIUM (Wrist Watch 1) illustrates an evolutionary point midway between the pocket watch and the wristwatches of the 1940s.

RENAISSANCE OF A BYGONE MATERIAL
With the PW1 and WW1 Argentium, Bell & Ross preserves the magic of vintage timepieces and sublimates them with the most innovative watch-making techniques: by using a new oxidation-resistant alloy, Argentium®, the pioneering watchmaker is reviving a forgotten metal. Inimitable color, magnificent luster and unique depth: the PW1 and WW1 Argentium are suffused with all the nobility of silver.

Vintage WW1 Argentium: FROM POCKET WATCH TO WRISTWATCH
Created from a unique silver alloy, the WW1 ARGENTIUM® models perfectly reflect the high-quality allure of the early wristwatches. An exercise in style mastered by Bell & Ross, these two models demonstrate the perfect refinement of its art.
These two versions continue the characteristics specific to the WW1 collection:
• The finish of the hands and index markers in appliqué metal give the model a timeless refinement.
• The horns are produced like wire handles and soldered to the case. The elegance of the straps harks back to the first wristwatches while being ergonomically perfect.

When i received the watch it has already shown signs of patina.
Unlike bronze, B&R choose Argentium as a case material and first one to do so.
The way this case patina is it slowly turns yellowish.
Thus as the weeks go by i will try to update at least once a week to show the progress of the metal.

This case can actually be brought back to like new condition (minus the daily wear marks) by using a special cloth which is provided by B&R at the time of purchase. And thus only said such watch is recommended to be used to wipe off the patina.
I will do so at the end of the review to show the difference.

Some pics of the watch on the stand.
Pay attention to the case as you can see it has now already patina a bit  ;D

Here you see the lugs which are soldered on the case.

Trying to capture this watch is a real challenge, with the polished case and dome crystal plus the sunburst dial, light reflects in all angles.

Here you see the sunburst dial, hands are polished as well but not too hard to read the time.
Subdial in a more solid color to give some contras.

Back of the case, has a criss cross motif going on here, textured to feel.
B&R logo right smack in the middle.
Even says its a manual wind watch. Good to know  :P

You will be a different shade in the middle and ask why?
Well i took off the protective sticker on the back yesterday. Which that part has not been oxidized yet.
That is the true color when the watch is brand new.
Kinda interesting to see how it will develop since its the part touching the skin.

Here i am showing in different lighting how the crown which has the logo engraved on it looks.

Back of the strap is signed too.

Here you also see the nice dark grey croc strap which matches really nice with the watch as it ages.
Really impressed by the work done on the buckle.
Nice machine work.

Buckle made of Argentium as well.

Wristshoot time  :Dancing_banana:
Under indoor light the dial really shows different shades and the sunburst dial works nicely.

Legibility is still good despite being "monotone" type of dial design

Dome crystal, AR coating on the inside hence no blue hue.

ETA7001 movement known for being reasonably slim.

Some initial thoughts after wearing for few days.
- Strap is of high quality, same as those found on watches 10x the price. BUT super stiff now  :'(, needs time to break it in.
- Winding of the watch is fairly smooth, not too noticeable clicks. Easy to achieve full wind if winding everyday.
- Crown for winding is excellent, nice grip, textured and easy to wind. No complaints there.
- Narrow 18mm lugs and strap width on a 41mm case needs getting used to, since its the design direction B&R has taken with this series to evoke the look and feeling of early day wristwatch era, its something different and welcomed by me.
- Legibility indoors no complaints. Outside at around 11am on clear hot Malaysia day? BLING BLING  :Laughing_on_floor:
- 30m WR needs to be careful.
- Holding the watch about 20cm from my ear i can already hear the beating sound of the movement.

Lets end this first initial postings with 2 more pic. More to come in the coming weeks.
Let the discussions fire away and i will try to answer as best i can and if not will answer with the help of B&R.

Also WELCOME any constructive feedback on the watch, design, look and even my review. The brand and myself would like to hear from the members here.

If there is any specific aspect of the watch you would like me to show or even test please let me know as well, will try my best to accommodate.

Patina on the case already showing.

Flat white subdial against the silver sunburst dial.

Great pictures. Quick question. If the lugs are soldered, how do you change the strap? Springbars on the lugs?

I love the silhouette of the case and how the wire lugs come together. Your pictures really show the design and built quality!

I have a few sterling 925 silver fountain pens which I enjoy the patina-effect over time.  It really adds character to the object being used and handles all the time.

Look forward to more shots when the patina is more apparent

Regarding changing the straps, there is actually a spring bar between the lugs.
U kinda squeeze the strap a bit and u can see the spring bar. Then the boutique uses a tool to get the spring bar out and change the strap.

Will try to get a pic of the tool to change the strap to see if its anything different from normal  ;D

A day time no fuss watch. Good for pub-going sessions, but not for fine dining moments.
IMHO, I think the minutes facia is a bit too bald..empty. Overall, it looked lazy without much excitement in it.
Will get bored with it within a week or two. For the price concious, they may be other tickers out there that are much more vibrant for the same price.

Hi Peter,

Interesting details of the watch.  Very simply watch to wear and with a great legibility.

Sure will be any interesting timepiece to have.

Thanks Takashi and sshark.

I think the simple design is what attracts people to have a second look at it. Just plain beauty... I personally like it. The patina itself provides some "excitement" for those who likes to be different/unique. But will wait to see more pics later and how the patina develops over time.

Thanks again for sharing. Are you at liberty to share the retail price?

Cheers

Why not, retail price can ask any AD or boutique and will be readily available.

I believe the retail is rm17.6k.

After week-1 of wearing the watch.
Had some time tonight after dinner so took some pics of the watch in indoor lighting.

It has started to develop a slight yellowish hue to the case.
A very warm color.  ;D

What i can notice compared to bronze case is that Argentium does not have spots during the patina process like bronze.
When i get the chance will try to have some side by side shoot with MWF project watch.

Rough observation on the accuracy with the watch resting crown up during the week is that it gains time.
By how much?
Enough for me to adjust the time again at the end of the week. Just because i am a very punctual person  :P

Will look for a chance to put the watch on a timer and get a more accurate assessment.

Pics below taken with white lighting on ceiling of living room.
