Who is your relative/fren?

In reality, not many ppl aknowledge their loses in any trade!!! Human!

Those who can make money normally are big time collector who has
1. Lot of knowledge on vintage pieces especially for patek n rolex
2. Lot of money to buy during low
3. Lot of guts n luck

best resale value rolex n pam... If u buy today n sell tomorrow u still loose alot just not as much as other
certain very limited patek yes, u buy today tomorrow value higher, but do not guaranttee u a buyer

it is possible to make money if u buy used on popular model at low...

But how often u hv such deal?

Both of them are small collectors only.
Perhaps like what you said, they may not mention on the losses they made.My relatives always shares out his profit trade on watch during family gathering.
Hahaha!!!!
Ever since then,i keep thinking maybe i could earn some profit out of the trade.Just some thoughts only

I suppose watches can be an investment. As an asset class in Malaysia, I wld think that there are better alternatives. Perhaps thats cos I buy my watches for wear, not for resale(i.e. investment)

Watches are in fact not good investments in the short term but in a very long term plus if you are extremely lucky, then possibly you can make a profit if you get the right model. Properties such as real estate do fetch a higher and more certain profit. Still in terms of whether they are 'good' investments, i highly doubt that they are.

IMO, watch is never an investment.... but of course some watches can resale higher in value, but not everyone have the opportunity to purchase those watches. due to the limited availability... (One good example is the PAM360)!

If I were to spend more than 10k on a watch, I will definitely consider the resale value in the future so that I will not lose too much on money spent. But for wealthy watch enthusiasts, they will probably buy whatever they like without considering the price in the future.

Hi,

I remember when i'm in schooldays. Most older people (60+) always said that we should keep or buy ROLEX. In case WAR came. We can sell out the ROLEX easily. Money is no value.....

Hmmm, why WAR?

Happy New Year.

No, collecting watches is a hobby not an investment. you are better off with FD in banks. Sometimes you may get lucky (as I did with my PAM 195 and PAM 360)  but those are purely based on luck rather than being intentional (but I've also lost money selling others like the PAM320, PAM292, Omega Speedmaster etc).

HOWEVER, what you must do is a little bit of homework to determine the second hand market (usually the likely percentage that you'll lose-coz usually that's the case)  in case you need to sell later.

My only advice apart from the possible resale value is to buy a piece that sings to you. It doesnt matter what other people think coz the piece is going to be on your wrist. The more you love it, the more you'll give it wrist time which is the best "return on investment" IMHO.

Don't think watches makes good investment. You can make some money by doing your homework, but I doubt you can make good money.

I think every1 in this forum also must salute u!!!

But a real collector or watch lover dun sell their collection!!!

So better think y u buy a watch
1. U like the design, u want to wear it
2. u want to keep it bcoz u r a collector n u jus can't sleep without watch
3. U want to make money for the watch u buy, pure investment
4. Mix of above

when u r clear then only u do ur study... Y?

Collector will only buy mint n fullset watches if possible
investor will buy when he think the selling price is below Market
wearer will buy as long as design suit his style n status mayb

Concur

Certain models can sell in US but no one wants  here.
So buy cheap here and sell at market price in US

Tha reverse is true..

I used to buy brand new but after losing my pants when I tire of it and sell,
I buy pre owned now.

Only new watch i make $$ after about 5 years are my Omega 35th anniv ltd
and Rolex GMT Master II when it was discontinued

Then again, buy what you like if you are not in it to make $$,not what other people like.
Have many kakis who kill 2 birds with 1 stone.buy low, bored with it, sell at a profit.
And they get to enjoy wearing it as well.

Concur...in general look for underpriced hot models.Of course everyone knows "buy low sell high

I used to have this mentality of never selling whatever I buy.
Have wised up since as some pieces just dun get worn so I cannot let the watches pile up.
Might as well release some funds by selling them  and buy something else I will include in my rotation

Agreed, totally. Sell those you dun wear.

HOWEVER, when come to selling them breaks the heart. Even if you are offered @ higher price, you afraid you can sell it higher in the future and probably you will never get to buy it it back again. Dilemma

I am not sure I agree.  One thing for sure, wearing good watches have not helped my career.  May be mine were not good enough and I need a Richard Mille or a MB&F  ;D

As for professional appearance, sometimes wearing a bling watch will make you look like either a rich a$$hole or a wall street crook.  A Georgio Armani suit is actually a cheaper alternative if you want a very smart, professional and powerful corporate look!   :Laughing_on_floor:
